Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 a good car?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 earns an 8.33/10 expert rating.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

It builds on the XC90’s role as Volvo’s flagship SUV with updated styling, materials, and feature offerings, while keeping the midsize three-row layout that makes it appealing if you want a polished family hauler. The trade-offs are that semi-autonomous driving is not available and the top-tier sound system still costs extra even on the top trim.

At 35.5%, the share of good and great deals suggests there’s meaningful room to shop carefully.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 reliable?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is presented as a polished, well-regarded SUV with a strong safety reputation and a focus on functional, smooth operation. The standard advanced driver-assistance systems operated smoothly during testing, and the vehicle’s mechanical updates are aimed at improving ride comfort and handling.

Its powertrains are described as user-friendly, especially the B5 and B6, which avoid the charging obligations that come with the plug-in hybrid. The plug-in hybrid does require regular charging to deliver its fuel-saving benefits, and the standard suspension now uses Frequency Selective Damping technology to improve ride comfort and stability.

The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the more complex plug-in hybrid setup can add hassle if you do not plan to charge it regularly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and verify that the specific listing matches the equipment and powertrain you want. A pre-purchase inspection is especially useful on a luxury three-row SUV, since you’ll want to confirm condition, electronics, and any signs of heavy family use. Focus on trim content, seat configuration, and whether the vehicle has the features you expect for the price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Core, Plus, and Ultra each bring different equipment levels, and the base trim leaves out some of the more upscale touches that make the XC90 feel special.
• Powertrain: You can choose among B5, B6, and T8 setups, with the B5 and B6 offering mild-hybrid convenience and the T8 adding plug-in hybrid capability and up to 33 miles of pure-electric range.
• Safety package: Standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, and the blind-spot information system, plus active collision-avoidance features such as intersection auto brake and large animal detection.
• Infotainment: The touchscreen is larger and sharper, uses a new interface, supports Google Built-In, and includes standard Apple CarPlay with wireless and USB-C connectivity; the Ultra trim adds a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The T8 plug-in hybrid offers up to 33 miles of pure-electric range and an EPA-rated max of 27 mpg.

Which 2025 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Core, Plus, and Ultra.

Here's the short version:

• Core: This is the entry point, and it makes the XC90’s core strengths accessible if you want the flagship SUV experience without stretching to the pricier trims.
• Plus: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more of the XC90’s upscale character, including the crystal shift knob and richer interior material options.
• Ultra: Choose this if you want the most complete XC90 experience, including the head-up display and access to the premium audio upgrade.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim to get the core driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Volvo XC90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,607 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.75% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 94.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $51,571, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $51,571 sits slightly below last year's $56,514.

That decline suggests the XC90 is currently in a softer pricing phase, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. If you plan to sell later, the recent drop means your resale outcome will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and trim. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should hold up better than higher-mileage or lightly equipped versions.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2025 Volvo XC90 is too new to have been crash-tested by independent safety organizations, but its predecessors as well as the automaker itself have established quite the reputation. The 2024 XC90 earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), that non-profit’s highest honor. It also scored top marks from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with five-star overall ratings.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard advanced driver-assistance systems include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, lane-departure warning, and the blind-spot information system. It also includes active collision-avoidance features such as intersection auto brake and large animal detection.

One important caveat is that it does not offer a hands-free highway-driving system, so if that feature matters to you, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

Should I buy a 2025 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.75% compared with last year.
• The 2025 brings updated styling, materials, and feature offerings along with mechanical tweaks aimed at improving ride comfort and handling.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $44,982, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $51,571 average.
• It remains appealing for its timeless styling and plug-in hybrid availability.

The bottom line: Choose the 2025 if you want the freshest XC90 with the most polished feel and updated features. If your priority is saving money, the 2024 is the smarter value play, especially if you find one in strong condition with the equipment you want.
