Is the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?

The 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan earns an expert rating of 6/10.

The model scores 6/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.

It stands out for its redesigned styling, improved user interface, comfortable ride, and quiet cabin, while still feeling like a compact SUV that fits into a crowded class rather than one that clearly leads it. The main trade-off is that it does not separate itself much from rivals, and cargo space is limited.

Cons: Not much cargo space.

With 38.2% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.

Is the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

The 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan is presented as a comprehensive improvement over its predecessor, with a smoother and more linear drivetrain than before. Its comfort-focused suspension and quiet cabin also point to an easygoing ownership experience for daily driving.

The powertrain is described as delivering power with fewer surges or slow reactions, which should make it feel more predictable in normal use. The cabin is tuned for comfort rather than sportiness, and the overall setup is aimed at core compact-SUV buyers who want a calm, straightforward vehicle.

Volkswagen also notes that the base model is very well equipped and should satisfy most shoppers, which can help reduce the urge to move up the trim ladder just to get essential features. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that this is still a competitive compact SUV with limited cargo space, so you should make sure its packaging works for your needs before committing.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and verify that the specific car you’re considering has a clean maintenance and accident record. A pre-purchase inspection is especially useful if you’re comparing multiple trims, since equipment levels change meaningfully as you move up the range. Focus on cabin condition, infotainment operation, and whether the features you want are standard on that trim or only available higher up.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S trim is well equipped, but higher trims add more convenience and luxury touches. The top SEL R-Line also brings illuminated exterior details, a larger display, and more premium cabin equipment, so you should check whether the added features justify the jump for you.
• Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, while 4Motion all-wheel drive is available on all models and comes standard on the top SEL R-Line.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, safe passenger exit warnings, parking proximity sensors, automatic high beams, driver condition monitoring, Emergency Assist, and post-collision braking. The SE R-Line adds a head-up display, while the SEL R-Line adds a surround-view camera system, traffic sign reader, and semi-automated parking system.
• Infotainment: Every Tiguan gets a 12.9-inch touchscreen, a digital instrument panel, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a wireless phone charger. A 15-inch display is available and standard on the top trim, and it adds native navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The base S trim is estimated at up to 26 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. Other trims drop by one or two mpg across the board, while 4Motion AWD is rated at 22/30 mpg city/highway and 25 mpg combined.

Which 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE R-Line, SEL R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the Tiguan’s core strengths without paying for extras. It comes with the standard digital instrument panel, 12.9-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and the full base safety suite, making it the best-value choice for most shoppers.
• SE R-Line: This trim adds a head-up display, so it makes sense if you want a more upscale feel without going all the way to the top model.
• SEL R-Line: This is the most feature-rich version, with standard 4Motion AWD, a 15-inch display, native navigation, a surround-view camera system, a traffic sign reader, semi-automated parking, and massaging front seats.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, with the top trim adding the most advanced convenience and driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,460 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.07% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 94.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $30,263, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $30,263 sits slightly below last year's $35,217.

That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. If you plan to sell later, the current softness means your resale outcome will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and trim. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should hold up better than base cars with higher miles.

Is the 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard advanced safety features include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, safe passenger exit warnings, parking proximity sensors, automatic high beams, and a driver condition monitor. If the driver is incapacitated, Emergency Assist will automatically slow the vehicle to a stop and activate the hazard lights. Post-collision braking is also included.

The SE R-Line adds a head-up display, while the top SEL R-Line adds a surround-view camera system, a traffic sign reader, and a semi-automated parking system. In testing, the safety and driver-assist features functioned as expected, with no false alarms or over-sensitivity issues.

Should I buy a 2025 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.07% compared with last year.
• It brings a redesigned cabin, improved controls, and a comfortable, quiet daily-driving experience.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $24,534, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $30,263 average.
• It adds more desirable standard equipment and stronger value.

Consider the 2026 if:

• It adds a more powerful top trim with a stronger performance edge.

The bottom line: If you want the newest redesign and a more polished everyday experience, the 2025 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2024 is the smarter value play. If you’re willing to spend more for a stronger top-end version, the 2026 is the one to watch.
