Reviewed a 2025 Toyota SR5 4WD on Apr 5, 2025
In love with this car, I think the car is fantastic value. Of course, with this being a new drivetrain time will tell if reliability lives up to the previous gens. Outside of that consideration the car is an absolute blast and I love the new 4 cylinder turbo. It feels very dialed in and the power is great, the car just wants to take off and it feels genuinely quick. I just switched from a 2018 F-150 and the suspension was a massive upgrade, the car feels planted and rugged but still soft enough on the bumps you’re comfortable driving. Very impressed with the safety features and tech with this being a base model. The car will let me know via the app when I’ve left something in the backseat or left a window open of door unlocked! As well the screen despite being the “small” screen is still a great size and has the same features as the larger one. The seats are cloth and I love the fabric, design, and feel of them. My car has the grey seats and the look genuinely solid. The interior has a lot of plastic as is to be expected but the design is sleek and looks very premium. Despite the interior having a decent amount of plastic components it feels very well constructed and all of the functions and pieces, whether shifting the car into a different drive mode, open and closing the door, temperature controls, etc. have a very nice feel to it. The speakers are phenomenal, the bass is genuinely crazy and the sound quality is crisp, you would find it hard to believe this is the cheaper sound system! From what my salesman was telling me even the 8 speaker bass system are JBL speakers and while I haven’t verified by reading up on it, the performance of it seems to match for sure! The capability, cargo space, and even leg room in the back are great as well for a car its size and class. As well it feels nimble to drive, has a great turning radius and just looks fantastic. I took the air dam off of mine (that big plastic lip hanging off the front bumper) it took 5 minutes and could be accomplished with a Phillips head or common 10mm socket. If that hanging off the front makes you apprehensive of the new look it’s very easy to remove and the difference is night and day! Fair warning it caused a slight hit to mpg, usually less than 1 mpg from what I’ve heard but I haven’t confirmed myself but it frees up a whole 5 1/2 inches of ground clearance in the front so if you plan to take it off road definitely worth removing. Overall I’m in love with this car and highly recommend it if you’re in the market for a capable off road suv. If reliability holds up as well as previous models as much as I love Ford I would have a very hard time switching back from Toyota!!

The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.
You get a rugged, heritage-inspired SUV that still feels modern inside, with a cabin layout that is functional and more refined than some direct off-road rivals. It also brings stronger power and better on-road composure than the previous generation, while keeping the all-terrain focus that makes you consider a 4Runner in the first place.
The main trade-offs are limited rear-seat space for taller passengers and some powertrains that still need to work hard when you ask for quick acceleration.
33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2025 4Runner is presented as a durable, all-terrain SUV with Toyota's reliability reputation behind it, and the expert review emphasizes that it keeps the rugged formula buyers expect while adding more capability, power, comfort, and technology. The new hybrid option also broadens the lineup without abandoning the truck-like toughness that defines the model.
Its standard powertrain is described as more powerful than the previous V6, and the hybrid adds stronger low-speed usable power, which is especially helpful when you use the vehicle off-road or load it up for travel. The expert review also notes that the cabin is quieter than before, which should help reduce fatigue on longer drives.
If you plan to keep it for the long haul, your biggest ownership risk is less about basic durability and more about choosing the right trim and powertrain for how you actually drive it.
What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, and pay close attention to how the truck has been used. For a 4Runner, condition matters most in the areas that take the hardest abuse: suspension, tires, underbody wear, and any signs of heavy off-road use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is more refined than some rivals, but it still uses plenty of hard plastic to better survive off-road punishment. The base setup also leaves some convenience and visibility features to higher trims.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 317 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, while the Hybrid i-Force Max delivers 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. The standard engine is efficient for the class, and the hybrid is the stronger choice if you want more low-speed punch.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard and includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, automatic high beams, and Proactive Driving Assist. A blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts is optional.
- Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen is standard on supporting trims, while a 14-inch screen is available. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are offered, along with a wireless charging pad and a digital instrument panel on Hybrid variants.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is estimated at 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. The Hybrid is estimated at 23/24/23.
Which 2025 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 9 trim levels: SR5, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Hybrid variants.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 is the entry point, and it gives you the core 4Runner experience without the extra off-road hardware and convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: TRD Off-Road is the best fit if you want serious trail ability without jumping all the way to the most expensive adventure-focused models.
- Premium/top trim: TRD Pro and Trailhunter are the most capable and most specialized choices, with the strongest off-road hardware and the most adventurous positioning.
- Off-road trim: Trailhunter can add wind noise from its snorkel, which is worth considering if you spend a lot of time on the highway.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the lineup, and the blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts remains optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,683 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 94.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $48,886.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $52,750 sits slightly below last year's $55,816.
That softer pricing can help you buy more selectively now, but it also means the market has already adjusted downward from a higher point. If you buy well, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation compared with paying closer to the top of the range.
The 4Runner's strong reputation, broad appeal, and high owner satisfaction should help support demand when you eventually sell. Models with the right trim and condition profile are likely to remain attractive to used buyers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
All 4Runner models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, automatic high beams, and Proactive Driving Assist. A blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts is optional.
Crash test results are not yet available for this model year, so you should lean more heavily on the standard safety equipment and the vehicle's overall packaging when evaluating it.
Should I buy a 2025 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2025 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 94.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings more capability, power, comfort, and technology than the outgoing generation.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $46,558, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $52,750 average.
- It remains a rugged, reliable off-road SUV with strong everyday practicality.
The bottom line: If you want the newest 4Runner with the biggest step forward in powertrain, tech, and refinement, the 2025 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front and you can live with the older-generation experience, the 2024 is the value play.
