Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender a good car?

The 2025 Land Rover Defender earns an expert rating of 7.5/10.

The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.

The Defender’s appeal is that it gives you serious off-road ability without giving up a more refined, comfortable personality. It also offers multiple body styles and a wide range of powertrain choices, so you can tailor it to everyday use or tougher terrain. The trade-offs are poor fuel economy and weaker on-pavement handling, plus rear visibility that can be a challenge.

37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The Defender is presented as a rugged, capable SUV with a more refined personality than many off-road-focused rivals, and its powertrain lineup is broad enough to suit different kinds of buyers. The expert review also emphasizes that it is built to handle rough terrain while still feeling comfortable in daily driving.

Its performance notes point to robust, smooth acceleration from the turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder, along with a standard AWD system and low-range gearing for off-roading. The cost-effectiveness notes also point to a four-year/50,000-mile warranty and roadside assistance plan that can help during a typical lease term.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that it can be expensive to run and may not deliver the low-stress ownership experience of more reliability-focused rivals.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Land Rover Defender?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has been used for towing or off-road driving. Focus on signs of wear in the suspension, tires, brakes, and underbody, and make sure the electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 110 four-door is the sweet spot in the lineup, while the 90 looks especially stubby and the 130 carries more visual mass over its rear wheels. The X trim adds upgraded interior materials and Land Rover’s off-roading technology as standard equipment.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, plus turbocharged or supercharged V8 options. The turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder delivers robust, smooth acceleration and pairs with a mild-hybrid system, an eight-speed automatic, and standard AWD with low-range gearing.
• Safety package: Standard driver aids include automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. Lane-centering assist is available when using adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: The Defender uses an 11.4-inch touchscreen with Pivi Pro, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, a configurable digital driver display, SiriusXM 360L, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. It also offers connected services, and the system can be paired with a head-up display, ClearSight digital rearview mirror, and surround-view camera system.
• Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle’s window sticker said 19 mpg in combined driving, and observed fuel economy on the testing loop was 16.2 mpg.

Which 2025 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2025 Land Rover Defender is offered in 4 trim levels: 90, 110, 130, OCTA.

Here's the short version:

• 90: This is the shortest, two-door version, so it suits you if you want the most compact Defender shape and can live with the less practical body style.
• 110: This is the sweet spot in the lineup and the best-value choice for most shoppers because it balances the Defender’s rugged character with everyday usability.
• 130: This extended four-door is the right pick if you want the most passenger and cargo space, and the test vehicle showed how well it can be equipped.
• OCTA: This is the high-performance model for buyers who want the most extreme version of the Defender lineup.

The safety package includes a broad set of standard driver aids, and lane-centering assist is available when you use adaptive cruise control.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Land Rover Defender?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,691 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.64% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 95.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $68,110, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $68,110 sits slightly below last year's $73,742.

That price movement suggests the Defender has softened in the used market, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means you should expect some depreciation pressure rather than a strong value-retention story. If you buy at the right price now, you may reduce the sting of that decline later. If you plan to resell soon, the current trend argues for being disciplined on your purchase price.

Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Land Rover equips the Defender with automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. Lane-centering assist is available when you use adaptive cruise control, and the system offers selectable assistance levels through a Driver Assistance Mode menu.

The review notes that the lane-keep assist can be decisive, and in this test vehicle it once tried to steer the Defender into a turnout area on a local highway. Adaptive cruise and lane-centering assist generally worked transparently, though the system showed some minor struggle in heavy traffic.

Should I buy a 2025 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 95.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.64% compared with last year.
• The 2025 adds the high-performance Defender OCTA and keeps the lineup broad and flexible.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $56,847, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $68,110 average.
• It adds new trims and features while expanding V8 availability.

Consider the 2026 if:

• It brings subtle styling updates, a larger touchscreen, and new color and accessory options.

The bottom line: If you want the broadest current lineup and the newest high-performance option, the 2025 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2024 is the better value path. If you want the latest small updates without changing the Defender’s core character, the 2026 is worth a look.
