Why it stands out
The 2024 Toyota GR86 epitomizes the classic sports coupe experience, featuring a lightweight chassis, rear-wheel drive, and an engaging boxer engine that thrives on spirited driving. Co-developed with Subaru, it shares much with the Subaru BRZ, making it a well-rounded option for driving enthusiasts. The GR86's transition from its roots as the Scion FR-S to its current form has been marked by continuous improvements, offering a tractable 228 horsepower from its 2.4-liter engine, enhancing performance and driving dynamics.
The model emphasizes fun, responsiveness, and an ideal weight distribution for an exhilarating ride, whether you're navigating city roads or winding backroads. Buyers are drawn to its balance of enjoyment and value, particularly given its robust accident-free record and lack of major issues reported across its history. While it sacrifices some practicality with a cramped back seat and firm ride quality, the exhilaration behind the wheel often outweighs these drawbacks for its target market.

Reviewed a 2024 Toyota GR86 on May 19, 2024
In the past three years Ive purchased a new Porsche Cayman, a new Hyundai Veloster, and this GR86. The Porsche was unreliable from day one and the dealer never could repair it. The Veloster was quirky looking, but it performed better than the Porsche and its 8 speed DCT was MUCH better than the 7 speed DCT in the Porsche. But the GR86 looks better than either of the other two and is more fun to drive because of the manual transmission. The GR86 doesnt have quite as much horsepower but it handles better and because it is a non turbo, I expect better long term reliability.
