Is the 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.2/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, which points to a truck that delivers strongly for the right buyer. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

Owners repeatedly praise its capability, impressive features, and professional-grade feel, along with the value it offers. The overview also makes clear that this truck is aimed at buyers with genuinely demanding towing and hauling needs, especially if you want a massive cabin with luxury trimmings and strong diesel towing muscle.

The main trade-offs are its thirst for fuel and its barge-like feel when parking, and the expert review also notes that the near-twin Chevrolet Silverado HD is cheaper. Even so, the market still shows 35.6% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there’s room to shop carefully.

Is the 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a truck that feels capable and dependable in daily use, with buyers appreciating its professional-grade character and value. That same feedback also highlights confidence in the truck’s long-term usefulness, especially when you’re buying it for heavy-duty work rather than casual commuting.

On the expert side, the Duramax diesel is described as refined, with strong highway passing power and a transmission that never hunted for the right gear. The review also notes that the powertrain feels smooth and quick for a truck of this size, which supports the impression of a well-sorted heavy-duty setup.

For used buyers, the biggest long-term ownership risk is making sure the truck’s condition matches its mileage and workload, since heavy-duty trucks can be used hard and expensive repairs can add up quickly.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used for towing or commercial work. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the equipment and features you want are actually present on the specific truck you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Denali Ultimate sits at the top of the lineup and brings nearly every available option, including a six-passenger Crew Cab, two bed lengths, standard LED headlights and taillights, sequential turn signals, and the MultiPro Tailgate. The base-trim gap is that lesser Sierra HD models make do with a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen, while the Denali Ultimate gets a much richer cabin and feature set.
• Powertrain: The Denali Ultimate uses a 6.6-liter Duramax turbocharged diesel V8 with 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed Allison automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. It also adds a locking rear differential, two-speed transfer case, all-terrain tires, heavy-duty air filter, underbody skid plates, hill descent control, and a diesel exhaust brake.
• Safety package: It comes standard with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera, pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and a rear-facing cargo bed camera.
• Infotainment: The Denali Ultimate features a 13.4-inch screen, a 15-inch multi-color head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless device charging, Google built-in, a 12-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system, and split-screen navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: During long highway stints, the Duramax diesel could stretch as much as 21 miles from each gallon of diesel, while suburban and city driving could dip into the single digits.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and focused.

• Deal availability: 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,423 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.25% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $64,697, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD's resale value?

The current average of $64,697 sits slightly below last year's $70,514.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you as a buyer but may temper short-term resale expectations if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at the right price now, you may have less downside risk than someone who bought when prices were higher.

For future sellers, the key is to preserve condition and documentation, because heavy-duty trucks can vary widely in how they’ve been used. A well-kept example with desirable equipment should still attract interest, especially if it presents as a clean, well-maintained truck rather than a hard-used workhorse.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD safe?

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking camera, pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and a rear-facing cargo bed camera.

The extra-large power-operated side mirrors also help visibility, and they can be extended further for a wider side and rearward view. Just remember to tuck them back in on narrow roads or in the car wash.

Should I buy a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2024 model year adds the Denali Ultimate as a newly available top trim with nearly every option and a 22,500-pound maximum towing capacity.

The bottom line: If you want the newest version with the most upscale trim and strong towing credentials, the 2024 is the one to target. If your priority is simply getting the lowest possible price, a different year may be worth considering, but you’ll want to compare equipment carefully so you don’t give up the features that matter most to you.
