What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report on any truck you’re considering, even if it looks clean on the lot. A pre-purchase inspection matters here because the Tacoma’s appeal often overlaps with harder use, and condition can vary a lot from one example to the next. Focus on signs of wear in the cabin, suspension, and underbody, especially if the truck was used off pavement or for towing.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from SR to TRD Pro, with the SR starting out more spartan and the Limited bringing a more upscale cabin with leather upholstery and soft-touch materials. The TRD Pro adds underbody skid pads, a TRD-tuned suspension, a TRD sport exhaust, a unique grille, and a hood scoop, while the SR5 SX package adds black overfenders, black wheels, and blacked-out trim and badging.
• Powertrain: Lower trims use a 2.7-liter four-cylinder with 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, while the available 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. The V6 is the better choice if you want stronger acceleration and more satisfying everyday performance.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera are also mentioned, but lane-keeping assist and rear automatic emergency braking are not included.
• Infotainment: Base SR trims use a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get an 8-inch touchscreen. All Tacomas include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio, and the truck can be equipped with a premium JBL audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The four-cylinder with rear-wheel drive is rated at 20 mpg city and 23 highway, while the V6 with four-wheel drive is rated at 18 mpg city and 22 highway. The manual transmission gets 17 mpg city and 21 highway.

Which 2023 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trail Special Edition.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the most basic Tacoma, and it makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and can live with a more spartan cabin. It’s the trim where the 7-inch touchscreen and simpler interior set the tone.
• SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday usability without jumping all the way to the off-road-focused models. If you want a balanced Tacoma, this is the one to start with.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more styled, better-equipped Tacoma without going full trail rig. It sits above the SR5 and gives you a more premium-feeling step up.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the right pick if you want the Tacoma’s capability to be the priority. It’s the trim to consider if you expect to spend more time on rough roads or trails.
• TRD Pro: This is the most capable and most distinctive Tacoma in the lineup, with underbody skid pads, a TRD-tuned suspension, a TRD sport exhaust, and a unique grille. It’s the trim for you if off-road performance matters most.
• Trail Special Edition: This is the niche choice if you want a more specialized Tacoma flavor rather than the broadest value play.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, but the Tacoma does not include lane-keeping assist or rear automatic emergency braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 7,279 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.17% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 85.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $35,356, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $35,750 sits slightly below last year's $36,543.

That mild decline suggests the Tacoma is holding value reasonably well rather than sliding sharply. For you as a future seller, that kind of movement usually points to steady demand instead of a weak market.

The Tacoma’s reputation for reliability and strong owner satisfaction should help support buyer interest over time. If you keep the truck in good condition and avoid heavy wear, you’re more likely to preserve value than with a less sought-after pickup.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma was not awarded a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in side-impact tests and four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera are also mentioned on the tested truck.

The main caveat is that the Tacoma does not include lane-keeping assist or rear automatic emergency braking, and it lacks the more advanced driver-assistance setup found in some newer rivals.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.17% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the Tacoma’s proven reliability, strong off-road capability, and familiar truck appeal.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $32,748, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $35,750 average.
• It’s a smaller alternative with off-road ability and a manual transmission option.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $38,057, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $35,750 average.
• It brings a ground-up redesign with a new platform and turbocharged powertrains.

The bottom line: Buy the 2023 if you want the familiar Tacoma formula and a broad used-market selection. If price matters most, the 2022 is the better value play; if you want the newest redesign, move up to the 2024.
