CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota Prius
overall

Summary
With 775 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,270.00, 32.9% of 2023 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota Prius 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
84.9% of 2023 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Prius stands out first for its styling. After decades of being the frumpy leader of the fuel-efficiency movement, it arrives as one of the better-looking new cars to hit the market recently, and that fresh design gives it a much more appealing presence than the Prius name has traditionally suggested. It also brings a huge jump in power without giving up the fuel-sipping character that made the model famous, which helps it feel more modern and more capable than older Prius models.
That broader appeal is reinforced by impressive standard safety features and a reasonable suite of interior tech and comfort goodies, so the car is not just about efficiency. At the same time, it is not without tradeoffs: the price has risen significantly, the engine can drone loudly when pushed hard, and interior space and cargo room have decreased. Even so, the 2023 Toyota Prius remains distinctive because it combines strong fuel economy with a far sleeker look and a more powerful driving experience than the Prius has been known for in the past.

I got my XLE for 1000 under retail price. Right place right time I guess and so far I only have a few miles on it. So not to much to say other than it has remote start that is not listed on the window sticker and all the controls are easy to do. My biggest pet peeve is the antenna does not pick up my stations that my other Prius did in my driveway but they do come in down the road. Love the detail on the body lines that doesn’t look like the old ones. So far fuel mileage is way off on the estimate left for cruising range. Happy with Prius and will continue to buy them. Had the last one for almost 10 years so fingers crossed.

The information on the dash display might take some time to become familiar with. On my test drive I had trouble finding information that I wanted, partly because the graphics seem small compared to in my older Prius.

How much does the 2023 Toyota Prius cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,262 |
| Year-Round Low | $26,091.65 |
| Year-Round High | $28,587.02 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,147 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.41% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 803 listings available, which suggests a decent amount of inventory for you to compare. If you find a listing below $26,091.65, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota Prius earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
The data points to a Prius that has moved well beyond its old efficiency-first image: it now brings sleeker styling, a much stronger powertrain, and a more appealing cabin. It also fits buyers who want a hybrid that feels more modern and more capable in everyday driving.
The trade-offs are real, though. The price has risen significantly, the engine can drone loudly when pushed hard, and interior space and cargo room have decreased.
For you, that means the 2023 Prius makes the most sense if you want strong fuel economy without giving up style or a more engaging drive. 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 Prius is presented as a well-rounded hybrid with a strong efficiency story, a more substantial-feeling platform, and a powertrain that feels more athletic than earlier versions. Its performance notes emphasize that it feels eager in everyday driving, with ample acceleration and no lag to speak of.
The cost-effectiveness notes also point to a model that comes with a broad standard equipment set, which can help reduce the need for immediate add-ons after purchase. That said, the higher purchase price means you should pay close attention to condition and maintenance history when shopping used.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is paying a premium for a car that may have been driven hard or not maintained carefully enough to justify its asking price.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Prius?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check for wear, signs of hard use, and whether the car’s condition matches its price. Focus especially on the cabin, cargo area, and overall mechanical condition, since the model’s trade-offs include reduced interior space and cargo room.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE includes an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the standard safety suite, while the XLE adds features like alloy 19-inch wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, front and rear parking sensors, and a smart key.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine pairs with a more powerful electric motor and lithium-ion battery for 194 total horsepower in front-wheel-drive models and 196 total horsepower in all-wheel-drive models. It uses a continuously variable automatic transmission, and the engine can drone loudly when pushed hard.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 includes radar-based adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. These features are standard on all trims.
- Infotainment: The base LE and mid-grade XLE use an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XLE can be optioned with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, and that larger screen is standard on the Limited.
- Fuel efficiency: The model keeps the fuel-sipping character that made the Prius famous, and the earlier model year data notes up to 56 combined mpg for some versions.
Which 2023 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Prius is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LE gives you the essentials, but it lacks the upgraded comfort and convenience features found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLE is the trim to target if you want the best balance of value and equipment, since it adds 19-inch wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, parking sensors, and a smart key.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most fully equipped choice, adding the larger touchscreen, a JBL sound system, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power tailgate, and Digital Key.
All trims get Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 as standard, so you do not need to move up the range for the core driver-assistance package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Prius?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 803 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,091.65, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $28,262 sits slightly above last year's $28,147.
That small increase suggests the market has stayed stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern can be helpful because it points to predictable demand and less risk of a sudden value drop.
The Prius also benefits from a strong value story in the used market because buyers continue to respond to its efficiency, updated styling, and broad standard equipment. If the car remains in good condition, that combination should help it stay competitive when you decide to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across the lineup and includes radar-based adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. The car also includes stability control, traction control, eight airbags, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.
The top-end Limited trim can be optioned with Advanced Park, which adds hands-free automatic parallel parking. That feature is not standard, so if it matters to you, you’ll want to confirm the trim and option content carefully.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings a sleeker design, more power, and strong standard safety features.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $29,844, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $28,262 average.
- It adds a more practical interior and up to five-passenger seating.
The bottom line: if you want the better value and can live with the 2023’s higher price versus older Priuses, this year is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model with added practicality, the 2024 is the cleaner upgrade path.
