CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 3,545 currently listed for sale and an average price of $44,573.00, 33.0% of 2023 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota 4Runner 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
87.2% of 2023 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a traditional SUV that still has a clear purpose. It is described as an oldie but a goodie when chosen for specific uses, and its rough-and-tumble character has aged gracefully despite the fact that Toyota last redesigned it 13 years ago. That long-running formula gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want a vehicle with a classic SUV feel rather than a more modern crossover approach.
Toyota has also kept the 2023 4Runner relevant with updated equipment and special trims. The model’s technology is said to be kept at minimum standards, and it gains standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It is also available as a limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition, which adds some extra distinction for shoppers who want something less ordinary.
At the same time, the 2023 Toyota 4Runner is not trying to hide its compromises. Its strengths include off-road fun, a spacious cabin, and easy-to-use technology, but it also carries unimpressive safety ratings, poor fuel economy, and poor on-road handling. That mix makes it appealing to buyers who value durability and capability more than refinement.

The Toyota 4Runner is just about perfect! The third row is an added bonus when needed. The additional safety features on the 2023 is definitely a plus for a teen driver.

The ORP pkg had all the options I wanted and had low miles as well. Comfort, convenience and even the color I preferred. The engine has a history of reliability and it should hold its value over time.

How much does the 2023 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $44,573 |
| Year-Round Low | $41,453.51 |
| Year-Round High | $45,488.83 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $45,489 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.01% |
Prices have softened 2.01% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,521 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare before you commit.
If you find a listing below $41,453.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.75/5, and the expert rating is 7.00/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and performance, and they also value the way it holds its value over time. The traditional SUV feel comes through clearly, which is part of the appeal if you want something rugged rather than crossover-like.
The trade-offs are just as clear: poor fuel economy and the need for modifications for better performance come up in owner feedback, while the expert review points to unimpressive safety ratings and poor on-road handling. If you want a vehicle for daily commuting plus adventurous outings, the 4Runner fits that use case well, but it is less convincing if you prioritize refinement.
With 33.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to reliability, and the expert review reinforces that reputation by describing the 4Runner as having legendary reliability and durability.
The expert review also frames it as indestructible-feeling and built for long-term use, which lines up with the owner sentiment. On the ownership side, Toyota includes free scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles, which helps reduce early running costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic dependability and more about age-related wear, especially if the vehicle has seen hard use off-road or has been neglected on maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension, steering, brakes, and signs of off-road abuse. You should also pay close attention to tire wear, underbody condition, and how the cabin and controls have aged.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro. The base setup is more stripped-back, while the special edition adds retro styling, bronze accents, and standard four-wheel drive.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. Fuel economy is 17 mpg in combined driving, and the truck-like setup favors durability and off-road use over quick acceleration.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
- Infotainment: The biggest screen is 8 inches, and the system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and available Wi-Fi hotspot capability. Navigation, additional connected services, and a JBL premium sound system are available upgrades.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA fuel economy rating is 17 mpg in combined driving, and the review notes that the 4Runner has lousy gas mileage.
Which 2023 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: SR5 gives you the core 4Runner experience, but you give up the more distinctive styling and added equipment found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: SR5 Premium is the best value if you want a more polished setup without jumping to the pricier special editions or off-road-focused models.
- Premium/top trim: Limited is the most road-oriented upscale choice, and it suits you best if you want a more comfort-focused 4Runner with available full-time 4WD.
- Off-road trim: TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro make the most sense if you plan to use the 4Runner the way it was designed, but they are less compelling if most of your driving is daily commuting.
Toyota makes blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert standard on every trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market, so you should shop selectively and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,521 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.01% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $41,453.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $44,573 sits slightly below last year's $45,489.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from prior levels. If you plan to sell later, the current trend means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim appeal rather than broad market appreciation.
The 4Runner's strong reputation for reliability and durability should help support demand over time, especially among buyers who want a rugged SUV with a traditional feel. Well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives it an overall rating of four-star because it earns no better than a three-star rating for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision. It also gets a three-star rating for rollover resistance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a Marginal rating for driver protection in the small overlap frontal-impact test.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
The main caution is that the crash-test results lag behind newer rivals, so you should not treat the 4Runner as a class leader for safety.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.01% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $40,029, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $44,573 average.
- It offers the same rugged, adventure-ready 4Runner formula with strong off-road capability.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $46,543, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $44,573 average.
- It keeps the same durable, off-road-focused character while remaining behind newer rivals in tech and efficiency.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and updated safety equipment, the 2023 is the sensible pick. If price is your top priority, the 2022 is the better value path, while the 2024 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer model year and are comfortable paying more.
