How much does the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?

Prices have softened 10.88% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,250 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns an 8.5/10 expert rating.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

It is positioned as a luxury full-size sedan for you if you want a high-end cabin, advanced tech, and a plug-in hybrid powertrain that can travel far on electricity. The trade-offs are clear: it is very expensive, and it doesn’t qualify for the federal tax rebate. Even so, the market still shows 35.3% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is described as a few years into its latest generation, which supports the sense of a mature, well-developed design. Its plug-in hybrid setup pairs a turbocharged inline-six with a battery and electric motor, and the powertrain is presented as smooth in hybrid operation with seamless transitions between electric and gas power.

The expert review also notes that the transmission generally works in the background and that the ride is exceptionally calm, which points to a refined ownership experience. You also get a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty and a six-year/60,000-mile limited warranty on the hybrid battery.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is the complexity that comes with a high-end plug-in hybrid luxury sedan, especially if prior maintenance or charging habits were inconsistent.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with advanced electronics, a plug-in hybrid system, and optional equipment. Focus on whether the car has been consistently charged, whether the cabin tech works as intended, and whether any suspension or steering options feel normal on a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S-Class lineup includes S 500, S 580, Maybach S 580, and Maybach S 680 trims. The tester’s S 580e adds plug-in hybrid hardware and 4Matic all-wheel drive, while the standard models emphasize calm sophistication and the higher trims bring more luxury presence.
• Powertrain: The S 580e pairs a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 28.6-kWh battery and an electric motor. It delivers 56 miles of all-electric range and can charge at up to 11 kW at home or 60 kW on DC fast charging.
• Safety package: The car includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, hands-on highway driver assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. The safety suite is comprehensive, though the review notes that the car has not yet been rated by NHTSA or IIHS.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.8-inch OLED center display, a reconfigurable 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and augmented-reality navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA gives the S 580e 51 MPGe combined, and the review reports 53.9 mpg during testing.

Which 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: S 500, S 580, Maybach S 580, and Maybach S 680.

Here's the short version:

• S 500: This is the entry point if you want the S-Class experience with the least expensive path into the lineup. It should suit you if you care most about the core luxury, tech, and refinement that define the car.
• S 580: This is the better-value choice if you want more power and a richer feature set without jumping to the ultra-luxury Maybach models. It is the trim to focus on if you want the strongest balance of capability and prestige.
• Maybach S 580: Choose this if you want a more opulent, chauffeur-style version of the S-Class with a stronger emphasis on rear-seat luxury and exclusivity.
• Maybach S 680: This is the top-end choice if you want the most lavish and powerful version in the lineup, and you are willing to pay for it.

The safety package is broad across the lineup, but some advanced driver-assistance features may vary by configuration.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,250 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.88% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $76,740, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $76,740 sits slightly below last year's $86,104.

That drop suggests the market has moved in your favor if you're buying now, but it also means a future seller may face softer pricing than earlier owners did. If you plan to resell later, the current trend points to a market that is still adjusting downward from last year’s higher levels.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has not yet been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety suite includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, hands-on highway driver assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. That gives you a very comprehensive set of driver aids, though some advanced functions may depend on configuration.

Should I buy a 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.88% compared with last year.
• The 2023 adds a new plug-in hybrid powertrain and impressive electric range.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $61,908, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $76,740 average.
• It offers a strong luxury feel with great ride quality.

The bottom line: If you want the newer powertrain, stronger electric capability, and a more current tech-and-efficiency story, the 2023 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2022 remains the value-oriented alternative.
