CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata
overall

Summary
With 328 currently listed for sale and an average price of $29,908.00, 31.7% of 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
92.1% of 2023 MX-5 Miata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata stands out as a pure driver’s car, and the test-drive data says that kind of enjoyment can come for less than $30,000. Mazda’s two-seat, rear-drive roadster is not the most powerful or the fastest sports car you can buy, and it is not the sort of convertible that turns heads through luxury-brand flash. Instead, its appeal is more elemental: top-down driving, a lighthearted sense of fun, and the kind of street-legal go-kart character that makes even a short drive feel special.
That focus on driving pleasure comes with clear tradeoffs. The cabin is a snug fit, cargo space is limited, and the car is described as potentially unsafe in a crash. Even so, the MX-5 Miata’s strengths are easy to understand: it delivers open-air enjoyment, a playful chassis, and instrumentation that is called perfect. For buyers who value simplicity and engagement over size, speed, or practicality, the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata remains a distinctive choice.

I absolutely love this car! The seat hugs me and is so comfortable. I use the heated seat feature every time I drive as it feels good on my back. There is plenty of leg room for someone 6 ft tall, but it is also good for me at 5’3”, as I can move the seat up. I like that I’m sitting up a bit more than sitting on the floor like a lot of sports cars I driven. The steering wheel is adjustable so I can see over it. It feels very roomy and has plenty of headroom for a small car. I have gotten many compliments on it as it is sooo cool!! And it is so very fun to drive! When driving with the top down, my hair doesn’t fly all over the place, and I can talk normally without raising my voice with my passenger. It also has blindside warning so I don’t worry about hitting a car in my blind site. It has a nice size screen for navigation or seeing my XM radio. The trunk is also roomier than I was expecting. The top is super simple to put back and can be done in seconds! The only thing I would change on it is I can’t pull the sun visor out and move it to the side if the sun is on my left. Otherwise, pretty darn close to perfect!!

I do love the shape of the new ND Miata, and especially all the safety features such as, lane departure warning and daytime running light’s. These are so small it’s harder for those big jacked up pickups and some SUVs to see them. The RF, retractable hardtop is also appealing especially if you park outside. You have the xtra security with it. I would like to see a little more room inside just a Skoch would be nice and they, have done away with the traditional glove box. So storage inside is at a minimum. The car still retains All it’s fun to drive attributes and being lighter in weight even with all the additional safety features it still manages to get very good gas mileage. Some have complained that the infotainment system is slow to operate even with Mazda updates.

Its always been a great car,the ND models with the extra hp makes them more fun.I had a 2016 grand touring and most recently a 2021 RF BREMBO BBS RECARO PACKAGE. Really nice but I prefer the soft top more than the RF.I love the feeling of a total open top.

If your searching for a sports car that has useable powerband for the street and perfectly balanced look no future. I have owned many wonderful cars but the Mx5 is one of my favorites. Usually have had Clubs this is my first Grand Touring and the extra goodies coupled with the Club specs I have stopped searching and found the one.

How much does the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $29,822 |
| Year-Round Low | $27,356.92 |
| Year-Round High | $29,998.46 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $29,230 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +2.03% |
Prices are up 2.03% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 335 listings available, which suggests you have some room to compare options without facing a flooded market.
If you find a listing below $27,356.92, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Mazda’s two-seat, rear-drive roadster is built around driving enjoyment rather than size, speed, or luxury-brand flash. The overview frames it as a pure driver’s car with top-down fun, a playful chassis, and perfect instrumentation, while the expert notes reinforce that it feels like a street-legal go-kart.
The main trade-offs are clear: the cabin is a snug fit and cargo space is limited. That makes it best for you if you value engagement and simplicity over practicality.
With 31.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have a decent chance of finding a strong-value example.
Is the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview and expert notes both point to a car that stays true to a simple, focused formula rather than layering on complexity. Mazda’s lightweight approach, rear-drive layout, and straightforward cabin design all support that impression.
The performance notes also suggest a durable, low-drama ownership experience: the 2.0-liter engine is described as smooth, the manual transmission is central to the car’s character, and the chassis tuning is aimed at balance and stability. Kinematic Posture Control is standard and helps tame the rear end in corners, which adds a layer of confidence without making the car feel complicated.
On the cost side, the base Sport trim is positioned as a relatively affordable way to get this kind of driving enjoyment, which can help keep ownership expectations realistic. For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is less about mechanical complexity and more about whether the car has been treated carefully in a demanding, exposed sports-car life.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially because this is a low-slung roadster that may have seen spirited use. Focus on cabin condition, roof operation, and signs of wear that could reflect frequent top-down driving or hard use. Since the car is compact and purpose-built, small issues can matter more than they would in a larger vehicle.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport is the most basic version, the Club improves handling, and the Grand Touring adds more features, including leather seats and shiny wheels. The base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more equipment.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, and the manual transmission is the preferred setup. The automatic is available, but it is not the enthusiast choice.
- Safety package: Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite includes Smart City Brake Support with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, plus blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and lane-departure warning. Grand Touring adds traffic sign recognition, adaptive front lighting, automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, and heated side mirrors.
- Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch screen and includes Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, text-messaging support, and E911 emergency notification. Club and Grand Touring add wireless Apple CarPlay, while Grand Touring is required for native navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The test car returned 29 mpg in combined driving, and the expert notes say you can expect at least 300 miles between gas stops.
Which 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Club, and Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point if you want the Miata experience at the lowest price. It keeps the car’s core formula intact, but it is the most basic trim, so you give up the extra equipment and polish found higher up the range.
- Club: This is the best-value trim if you want the most engaging setup without jumping to the top of the lineup. It improves handling, adds the sportier hardware and features discussed in the expert notes, and suits you if driving feel matters more than luxury touches.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most comfort and convenience features, including leather seats, shiny wheels, native navigation, and the added driver-assistance and visibility equipment. It is the trim to buy if you want the most complete Miata experience.
Grand Touring also adds the extra safety and visibility features noted in the safety package, while the base trim stays simpler.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 335 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.03% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 92.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $27,356.92, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata's resale value?
The current average of $29,822 sits slightly above last year's $29,230.
That upward move suggests the market still values this model year’s mix of driving enjoyment and relative affordability. For you as a future seller, that can help support pricing if your car is clean, well maintained, and lightly used.
The Miata’s appeal is tied to its enthusiast reputation, so condition and presentation matter a lot. A well-kept example should remain easier to market than a neglected one, especially because shoppers are often looking for a fun weekend car rather than a high-mileage commuter.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata safe?
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda equips the Miata with a basic version of its i-ActiveSense driving assistance systems. Standard equipment includes Smart City Brake Support with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning.
Grand Touring trim adds traffic sign recognition, adaptive front lighting, automatic high-beam headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and heated side mirrors. That means the top trim gives you the most complete safety and visibility package.
The safety caveat is straightforward: the car is very light, exposed, and shares the road with much larger vehicles. That makes physics a real concern, so if safety is your top priority, this is not the easiest used car to recommend.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.03% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 keeps the Miata’s pure, lightweight, top-down driver’s-car formula intact.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $28,609, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $29,822 average.
- It adds Kinematic Posture Control and keeps the same enthusiast-first mission.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $31,703, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $29,822 average.
- It brings updated steering, a revised limited-slip differential, and newer infotainment.
The bottom line: If you want the classic Miata experience with strong market support, the 2023 is the safe default. If price matters most, the 2022 is the better value play. If you want the newest updates and can spend more, the 2024 is the upgrade path.
