Is the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.

The overview and test-drive data point to a car built around driving enjoyment rather than outright speed, with a two-seat, rear-drive layout and a top-down experience that makes everyday driving feel special. It is also described as a “street-legal go-kart,” and the perfect instrumentation reinforces its focused, driver-first character.

The trade-offs are clear: the interior is a snug fit, cargo space is limited, and it is not the most powerful or fastest choice in its class. That makes it best for you if you want a lightweight roadster that prioritizes fun over practicality.

38.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview and expert notes both frame the Miata as a focused, well-sorted roadster that rewards careful ownership. Its lightweight design, simple layout, and emphasis on driving enjoyment suggest a car that is engineered around a clear purpose rather than complexity for its own sake.

The performance notes also point to a smooth 2.0-liter four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive, and Kinematic Posture Control, all of which support a composed driving experience. On the cost side, the model is positioned as a relatively affordable way to get a fun convertible, and the available maintenance perk language reinforces that ownership can be straightforward.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the car’s small size and open-roadster design leave little margin for error in everyday use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title does not tell you everything about prior use or repairs. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the roof mechanism, cabin wear, tire condition, and any signs that the car has been driven hard or stored poorly. Because this is a small roadster, condition matters a lot more than mileage alone.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sport is basic, the Club improves handling, and the Grand Touring adds more features, including leather seats and shiny wheels. The base trim leaves you with the simplest setup, while the Grand Touring is the most feature-rich choice.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 181 horsepower, a six-speed manual, and rear-wheel drive. The automatic is available only on Grand Touring, and the car’s light weight is a major part of its appeal.
• Safety package: Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite includes Smart City Brake Support with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. Grand Touring adds traffic sign recognition, adaptive front lighting, automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, and heated side mirrors.
• Infotainment: The Miata uses a 7-inch Mazda Connect screen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, text-messaging support, and E911 emergency notification. Club and Grand Touring add wireless Apple CarPlay, while Grand Touring adds native navigation and a three-year trial for traffic and travel-link services.
• Fuel efficiency: The test car returned 29 mpg in combined driving, and the review says you can expect at least 300 miles between fuel stops.

Which 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Club, and Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the simplest way into the Miata, and it keeps the car’s core appeal intact if you mainly want the lightweight roadster experience at the lowest price.
• Club: This is the best-value trim if you want the sharper handling character and more of the enthusiast-focused equipment without jumping all the way to the top model.
• Grand Touring: This is the most comfortable and feature-rich choice, adding leather seats, more convenience features, and the automatic transmission if you want it.

Grand Touring is also the trim that gets the extra safety and convenience upgrades from the safety package.

If you find a listing below $27,304, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata's resale value?

The current average of $28,636 sits slightly above last year's $28,249.

That year-over-year increase suggests the Miata is holding demand well, which can help support resale value if you decide to sell later. The current pricing also sits within a fairly tight annual range, which is a sign that the market has a clear sense of what this car is worth.

Because the model is still drawing strong interest, a clean, well-kept example should remain easier to move than a less distinctive used sports car. If you buy smart and keep condition strong, you should have a decent path to a future sale.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata safe?

The 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata is described as potentially unsafe in a crash.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite includes Smart City Brake Support with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. Grand Touring adds traffic sign recognition, adaptive front lighting, automatic high beams, rain-sensing wipers, and heated side mirrors.

The safety caveat is straightforward: this is a very small, lightweight roadster, and the review emphasizes that the laws of physics matter here. If safety is your top priority, you should weigh that carefully before buying.

Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 38.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.37% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It delivers a pure, lightweight roadster experience with a street-legal go-kart character.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $27,299, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $28,636 average.
• It emphasizes the same fun-first roadster formula with strong value and enthusiast focus.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $30,102, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $28,636 average.
• It adds new steering, a reworked limited-slip rear differential, and updated infotainment.

The bottom line: If you want the current-year Miata experience with a strong mix of inventory and demand, the 2023 is a solid choice. If price matters most, the 2022 is the better value play; if you want the newest updates, the 2024 is the upgrade path.
