CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 1,212 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,907.00, 33.9% of 2023 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
85.5% of 2023 MAZDA3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by bringing luxury-level comfort and refined performance without the premium price tag. It is presented as a reminder of how capable a compact car can be in everyday use, and the hatchback body style adds helpful cargo space along with a rear liftgate for extra versatility. Mazda’s stated aim is to deliver luxury-level performance and cabin quality without the luxury price, and this car is described as punching well above its weight in that regard.
What makes it especially appealing is the combination of an upscale interior and sharp, refined handling and acceleration. Those strengths give the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a more premium feel than many shoppers expect from a small car. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the infotainment system is described as maddening, and the massive C-pillar obstructs the rear view.

The Good: Interior looks great, exterior looks great. Oil pan plug and filter are very easy to access. Sound system is great (thanks bose). Media center knob is better than a touch screen. Manual transmission + snow tires makes this car one of the best Ive had in New England winters traction-wise. Good gas mileage. The Bad... THE WHOLE THING RATTLES on the interior and Mazda will not address it. They cannot guarantee it is a warrantee issue and will not look at the car w/o assessing the hourly shop fees, even though the car is well within warrantee . Car is just over a year old with <20k miles and rattles worse than the 22 y/o CRV it replaced. Engine is very underpowered and turbo charger is not available w/manual shift transmission. The key fob is annoying beyond words, the car seemingly decides when it will/wont lock which is a fun feature. Shift knob leather is very cheap and is already peeling from normal use. Rear window visibility is almost non-existent even with a hatchback. Heads up display cannot be disabled permanently, has to be shut off every time. Windshield spray goes everywhere but the windshield. Windshield washer fluid low warning takes over entire speedometer, seems safe. No heated mirrors in the premium package you are forced to buy to get the manual transmission. Unlock button on the rear hatch does not work for the passenger doors. First new car Ive ever owned and cant say I would buy another Mazda again based off of this experience. Again, aesthetically Mazda is not challenged by many other brands in this price range. However, the quality of the vehicle is definitely not what I came to expect from anecdotal evidence nor what I read online prior to purchase.

| Year-Round High | $23,027.64 |

If you find a listing below $21,082.79, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns 4/5 from users and 8.17/10 from experts, which puts it in strong territory for shoppers who want a compact car that feels more upscale than its price suggests. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
The appeal starts with the upscale interior, sharp styling, and refined handling that make it feel premium in everyday use. The hatchback body style also adds helpful cargo space and a rear liftgate, so you get extra versatility without moving up to a crossover.
The trade-offs are real: the infotainment system is frustrating to use, and the massive C-pillar hurts rear visibility. If you want a compact car that prioritizes driving enjoyment and cabin quality over tech simplicity, this one fits that brief well.
Good and great deals percentage: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is presented as a car that balances luxury-level comfort with refined performance, and that combination usually matters when you’re thinking about how a used car will hold up in daily life.
Its driving character is a strength: the steering is communicative, the ride is refined, and the turbo engine delivers strong performance without feeling harsh. The base powertrain is also described as the most efficient version, which can help keep ownership more manageable if you choose carefully.
The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the powertrain and more about living with the car’s frustrating technology and rear visibility issues over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize an inspection that checks the rear visibility setup, infotainment operation, and overall cabin condition, since those are the areas most likely to affect your day-to-day experience. If you’re shopping a hatchback, pay extra attention to how the design affects rearward sightlines and parking confidence.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5 S starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the Select adds 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and synthetic leather upholstery. The Preferred adds a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signals, while the Premium adds paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four makes 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, with front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic standard and all-wheel drive available. A turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder is also offered, making 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, with automatic transmission and AWD standard.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Select adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
- Infotainment: You get an 8.8-inch display that is controlled by a rotary dial rather than touch input, plus two USB ports, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice control. Higher trims can add navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo system.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine with front-wheel drive returns 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, it returns 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The turbo hatchback returns 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5 S: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the core Mazda3 experience with the 8.8-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the standard safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and can live without the nicer cabin upgrades.
- Select: This is the first trim that meaningfully improves everyday comfort with dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, and blind-spot monitoring. It looks like the best-value trim if you want a more complete ownership experience without jumping too far in price.
- Preferred: This trim adds the features many shoppers will actually notice every day, including a moonroof, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. It’s the sweet spot if you want the Mazda3 to feel genuinely upscale.
- Carbon Edition: This trim builds on the midrange formula with unique styling elements. Choose it if appearance matters most to you and you want something that stands out a bit more.
- Premium: This trim adds paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery. It’s the right pick if you want the most polished non-turbo setup.
- 2.5 Turbo: This trim brings the more powerful engine, but it gives up some equipment from the Preferred, including navigation and premium leather. Buy it if performance matters more to you than feature count.
- 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top trim and adds back premium equipment along with reverse automatic emergency braking, surround-view parking monitoring, and other driver-assistance features. It’s the one to choose if you want the most complete Mazda3 package.
The Turbo Premium Plus adds reverse automatic emergency braking and surround-view parking monitoring, which are especially useful on a hatchback with limited rear visibility.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
This is still a seller’s market, so you should shop selectively and be ready to move when a strong listing appears.
- Deal availability: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,242 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.21% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 84.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,082.79, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $22,782 sits slightly above last year's $22,072.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay a bit more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you’re thinking about future resale. A price trend like this usually points to steady demand rather than a softening market. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, that demand can help support your exit price later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
It earns Good ratings from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
The biggest safety concern is the massive C-pillar, which creates a large blind spot in the hatchback. The infotainment layout can also be distracting because it takes extra effort to navigate while driving.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.21% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It pairs upscale cabin quality with sharp handling and a hatchback’s added versatility.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,216, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,782 average.
- It adds a Carbon Edition and reinforces the Mazda3’s upscale feel.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $21,733, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,782 average.
- It offers more body-style, drivetrain, and engine flexibility.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of style, driving enjoyment, and everyday versatility, the 2023 is the one to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 and 2024 both sit below the current-year average, so you can shop those years for a lower entry price while still staying in the Mazda3 family.
