Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?

Generally — the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns 4/5 from owners and 8.17/10 from expert testing. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

The data points to a compact car that feels more premium than its class suggests, with an upscale cabin, sharp handling, and strong acceleration. It also fits buyers who want everyday usefulness, especially in hatchback form, where the extra cargo space and rear liftgate add versatility.

The trade-offs are clear: the infotainment system is frustrating to use, and rear visibility is limited by the large C-pillar. Even so, the car’s polished driving feel and upscale presentation make it appealing if you value refinement over simplicity.

38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is presented as a refined, well-built compact car with strong everyday appeal, and the expert evaluation reinforces that it delivers a premium-feeling driving experience. Its performance character is described as communicative and engaging, while the cabin quality is a major part of its appeal.

If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about living with the car’s usability compromises over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the rear visibility situation and the infotainment system, since both are recurring pain points. Focus on overall condition, especially if you plan to use the car as a daily driver.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2.5 S starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Select adds 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and synthetic leather upholstery. The Preferred adds a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signals. The Premium adds paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery. The Turbo Premium Plus adds reverse automatic emergency braking, surround-view parking monitoring, and other driver-assistance features.
• Powertrain: The base engine is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four with 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. It uses a six-speed automatic by default, with AWD available, and a manual transmission is available only on FWD Premium models. The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, and it comes with an automatic transmission and AWD.
• Safety package: Standard safety features include forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
• Infotainment: The standard setup uses an 8.8-inch display operated by a rotary dial rather than touch input. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus two USB ports, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice control. Higher trims can add navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo system.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine with FWD returns 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. With AWD, it returns 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The turbo hatchback returns 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.

Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5 S: This is the value starting point if you want the Mazda3’s core strengths without stretching your budget. You get the standard infotainment setup, keyless entry, pushbutton start, and the full base safety suite.
• Select: This is the best-value upgrade if you want a more polished daily driver. The added dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, and blind-spot monitoring make it feel meaningfully more complete.
• Preferred: This is the sweet spot for shoppers who want comfort features that make the car feel more upscale. The moonroof, heated front seats, and power-adjustable driver’s seat add a lot of everyday appeal.
• Carbon Edition: This trim is for buyers who want distinctive styling on top of the Mazda3’s upscale look and feel. It builds on the midrange formula with unique visual touches.
• Premium: Choose this if you want a more luxury-leaning cabin and extra convenience. The head-up display, navigation, paddle shifters, and genuine leather upholstery make it the most polished non-turbo choice.
• 2.5 Turbo: This is the pick if performance matters most. The more powerful engine gives the Mazda3 a stronger character, though you give up some equipment found on the Preferred.
• 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top choice if you want the most complete Mazda3 experience. It adds back key equipment and layers on reverse automatic emergency braking, surround-view parking monitoring, and other driver-assistance features.

The Turbo Premium Plus is the trim that most fully delivers the Mazda3’s safety and convenience upgrades.

• Deal availability: 38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,294 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.03% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 84.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,087, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $22,307 sits slightly above last year's $21,863.

That upward move suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year. If you buy carefully and keep the car in good condition, you should have a decent chance of preserving value relative to a softer market. The price range also shows there is still room for buyers to find a deal without chasing the highest-priced examples.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 comes standard with forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system. The biggest caveat is the large C-pillar, which creates a substantial blind spot, and the infotainment layout can also distract you while driving.

Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.03% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It blends upscale design with sharp handling and hatchback practicality.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $20,782, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,307 average.
• It emphasizes value, style, and driving enjoyment.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $21,400, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,307 average.
• It offers a more upscale feel with a broader configuration range.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of refinement, driving enjoyment, and current-market availability, the 2023 is the primary pick. If price is your top priority, the 2022 is the better value path, while the 2024 is worth considering if you want a newer-feeling alternative at a lower average price.
