CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 4,241 currently listed for sale and an average price of $25,934, 32.8% of 2023 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda CX-5 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
86.1% of 2023 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 remains an appealing choice in its segment, thanks to its stylish design, fun-to-drive character, and strong safety ratings. It also has a reputation for comfort, performance, and features, and owners often praise its stylish interior with high-quality finishes, a user-friendly heads-up display, and ride quality and handling that feel well sorted.
At the same time, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. Mazda made no changes beyond a new Rhodium White premium paint option, so this version is largely a carryover. Its drawbacks are worth noting, too: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and the infotainment user interface is widely criticized. Some owners also mention fuel economy as a downside, especially for longer-distance driving.

This was the car my daughter wanted, and I can see why. Sharp exterior, especially the black wheels and trim against the blue/gray paint- it really pops! The interior is just as sharp with loads of features that would cost extra in other manufactures. Engine performance is nice, with sport and normal modes to save gas. She is ecstatic about it so that makes me ecstatic. I talked to many Mazda owners and read lots of reports/reviews. So far, the word on the street about their reliability, performance, presentation, costs, etc... is spot on. I bought a brand new Toyota RAV4 for myself a few months ago. If you are considering an SUV like that, you should also check out the Mazda models. Highly recommend, and I might have bought a Mazda myself if I had known more about them!!

I had been told to stick to Honda or Toyota for a practical car but I was frustrated having to go higher trims to get my dealbreakers like keyless entry or power seats. I also hadn’t been a fan of SUVs but wanted more cargo space, so I was looking for hatchbacks, but they are so hard to find. Thankfully a friend with this car suggested I try it- I was floored to see how many reasonably priced barely used options I had! And more importantly, the BASE model has everything I could want- keyless entry, power seats, heated seats, a great screen, and so much cargo space. I was comfortable driving this IMMEDIATELY despite never having an SUV. The seats being leather trim with suede centers are truly the best of both worlds. And I could care less than it doesn’t have a touch screen, because the control knob is amazing. I love that the base model has all these perks without a moonroof, which I truly did not want. The only downside I can think of is a less than stellar fuel economy, but I just don’t drive long enough distances for that to be much of a concern for me personally..

How much does the 2023 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,926 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,849 |
| Year-Round High | $26,257 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,256 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.25% |
Prices have softened 1.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,301 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable range of choices.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.86/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and features, along with the stylish interior, high-quality finishes, and user-friendly heads-up display. The ride quality and handling also come through as recurring positives, which fits the CX-5’s more driver-focused personality.
The trade-offs are familiar: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and the infotainment interface is widely criticized. That makes it a better fit if you value style, refinement, and driving enjoyment more than maximum space or the easiest tech experience.
With the CX-5 positioned as a polished compact crossover that feels more upscale than many rivals, it makes the most sense if you want a well-rounded SUV with a premium lean. Good and great deals account for 34.8% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about living with over time, especially because comfort, performance, and features come up repeatedly in positive terms. That kind of response usually lines up with a model that owners feel confident keeping and recommending.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the CX-5 feels tight, solid, and refined, which supports the impression of dependable day-to-day use. Mazda’s standard all-wheel-drive setup and smooth, accurate driver-assistance behavior add to that sense of consistency.
Mazda also includes a free three-year trial subscription to Mazda Connected Services, which is a nice ownership perk if you plan to use the connected features. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the car’s age, tech, and packaging still suit your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda CX-5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the cabin, infotainment operation, and overall condition, since those are the areas most likely to affect your daily satisfaction.
Pay close attention to how the vehicle feels on the road and whether the controls, cameras, and driver-assistance features work as expected. If you care about comfort and refinement, make sure the interior wear matches the mileage and asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The CX-5’s cabin is stylish and high-quality across the lineup, but the base version misses some of the more upscale touches and convenience features that make higher trims feel more premium.
- Powertrain: You get a standard 187-hp four-cylinder with 26 mpg combined, or an available turbocharged four-cylinder with 256 hp and 24 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Mazda bundles its i-Activsense driver-assistance tech as standard equipment, while the 2.5 Turbo Signature adds the surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, rear low-speed automatic emergency braking, and Traffic Jam Assist.
- Infotainment: The system uses a 10.25-inch display, includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and offers Mazda Connected Services with a free three-year trial.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 26 mpg combined, while the turbocharged engine is rated at 24 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 8 trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Signature, and the other four versions referenced in the model lineup.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5 S: This is the entry point if you want the CX-5’s style, quality, and standard all-wheel drive at the lowest price, but it is also the trim where you feel the most feature restraint.
- 2.5 Turbo: This is the best-value choice if you want the stronger 256-hp turbo engine and the more rewarding driving character that comes with it.
- 2.5 S Premium Plus: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the top of the range.
- 2.5 Turbo Signature: This is the most luxurious and fully equipped version, with the extra safety and parking tech that help it feel closest to a premium SUV.
Mazda’s safety tech is broadly standard, but the most advanced features are reserved for the 2.5 Turbo Signature.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda CX-5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,301 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,849, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $25,926 sits slightly below last year's $26,256.
That modest decline suggests the CX-5 has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. The current pricing also shows the market has already adjusted to the model’s age and carryover status.
For a future seller, that means value retention will likely depend more on condition, mileage, and trim than on broad market momentum. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should still draw interest, especially because the CX-5 continues to appeal to shoppers who want a stylish, well-rounded compact crossover.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 earns five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment, along with the usual four-star rollover resistance rating, and it earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda’s i-Activsense suite is standard on most versions, and it operates in a smooth, refined, and accurate manner. Standard equipment includes features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and automatic collision notification.
The main safety caveat is that some of the most advanced features are limited to the 2.5 Turbo Signature, including the surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, rear low-speed automatic emergency braking, and Traffic Jam Assist. That means you should confirm exactly which driver-assistance features are on the specific used CX-5 you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 is a carryover year with a fresh paint option and the same polished, upscale feel.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $24,162, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $25,926 average.
- It delivers a more premium-feeling compact SUV with strong safety and turbocharged appeal.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $26,957, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,926 average.
- It adds further refinement while keeping the CX-5’s upscale, driver-focused character.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and overall appeal, the 2023 is the smart default. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2022 is worth a look; if you want the newest nearby option and don’t mind paying more, the 2024 is the cleaner upgrade path.
