CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Lexus GX
overall

Summary
With 1,285 currently listed for sale and an average price of $55,551, 35.3% of 2023 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Lexus GX 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
89.8% of 2023 Lexus GX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Lexus GX stands out as a body-on-frame luxury SUV with a distinctly old-school character. It is aimed at buyers who want towing and off-road ability, but still want to do those things in style and comfort. Its V8 engine is a major part of its appeal, giving it a strong personality in a small field of competitors.
That same traditional setup is also what makes the GX feel dated. The available information points to only mild updates for 2023, and it remains behind the competition in technology. Buyers who value a commanding driving position and off-road capability may find that tradeoff worthwhile, but they should also expect poor fuel economy and a cramped third row.

Third GX. They are not state of the art in driver technology, the mileage isn’t great, and it’s not going to pin your head to the back of the headrest—BUT, you will only need to get rid of this car when you get sick of it. Bullet proof, comfortable, great build quality, and safe.

I was one of the lucky ones to get the last real V8 GX. Isnt it funny how the experts rate the 2023 at a 6/10 and the real world owners rate it a 4.5 out of 5. Ill take real world owners opinions over so called experts any day The 2024 is delayed, recalled before it is even available and has the same engine as the Tundra, twin turbo garbage.

The owner feedback points to proven reliability, and it also describes the GX as dependable and trouble-free for buyers who want something they can count on over time. The V8 and traditional body-on-frame setup reinforce that sense of long-term durability, especially if you plan to keep the vehicle for years.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes the GX’s durable, old-school character and its ability to handle towing and off-road use with confidence. Lexus includes three years of Remote services, which adds a bit of ownership convenience.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age and outdated technology can make the GX feel less current even if the mechanical reputation is strong.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Lexus GX?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any specific listing, because a clean market average does not guarantee a clean individual vehicle. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you plan to use the GX for towing or off-road driving. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim and option content you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim gives you the GX’s core luxury-and-capability formula, but it also leaves you with a more basic equipment set than the higher trims. The Luxury trim adds more upscale touches, while the Black Line Special Edition brings unique appearance treatment and limited availability.
- Powertrain: You get a 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic. It delivers strong low-end power and a 6,500-pound towing capacity, but it also returns 15 mpg city, 19 highway, 16 combined.
- Safety package: The GX includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams. It does not include lane-tracing assist or road-sign recognition.
- Infotainment: The GX uses a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Lexus Remote Touch Interface is still present, and the system does not feel especially modern.
- Fuel efficiency: The GX is rated at 15 mpg city, 19 highway, 16 combined, which is a major ownership consideration if you drive a lot.
Which 2023 Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2023 Lexus GX is offered in 4 trim levels: GX 460, GX 460 Premium, GX 460 Luxury, and GX 460 Black Line.
Here's the short version:
- GX 460: This is the entry point, and it gives you the GX’s core V8, 4WD, and off-road hardware without pushing the price too far up. It makes sense if you want the basic GX experience and plan to add only the options you truly need.
- GX 460 Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience without jumping all the way to Luxury pricing. If you want a more complete daily-driver setup, this is the trim to focus on.
- GX 460 Luxury: This is the trim to choose if you want the most upscale version of the GX and are willing to pay for it. It suits you best if comfort and premium features matter more than keeping the purchase price in check.
- GX 460 Black Line: This limited-run version is for you if you want the GX with a darker appearance package and exclusivity. It also includes the panoramic monitor as standard equipment.
The safety package includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams, but it misses lane-tracing assist and road-sign recognition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Lexus GX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,290 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.47% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $54,490, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $55,525 sits slightly below last year's $57,519.
That price movement suggests the GX has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may temper short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the current market indicates that pricing discipline matters, especially if your vehicle has average mileage or visible wear.
The GX’s niche appeal still helps support demand among shoppers who specifically want a V8, towing ability, and off-road capability. That narrower audience can work in your favor if your vehicle is clean, well maintained, and equipped in a desirable trim.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Lexus GX safe?
The 2023 Lexus GX has not been crash tested by either NHTSA or IIHS.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Lexus equips the GX with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams. The safety setup is solid for the class, but you do miss lane-tracing assist and road-sign recognition.
Because the GX is based on an older design, you should keep in mind that its underlying structure dates back to an earlier era of SUV engineering. That does not make it unsafe by default, but it does mean you should weigh its standard driver-assistance coverage against its age and lack of crash-test data.
Should I buy a 2023 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines V8 power with towing and off-road capability in a luxury package.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $47,814, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $55,525 average.
- It emphasizes rugged off-road ability over everyday polish.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2023 if you want the current-year market, strong owner satisfaction, and a still-reasonable price trend. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2022 is the better value play, especially if you’re mainly shopping for the GX’s core strengths rather than the newest model-year badge.
