Is the 2023 Kia Soul a good car?

Owners consistently praise its value, spacious interior, and enjoyable ride, and the review summary also points to safety features and driving comfort as recurring strengths. On the downside, the expert review calls out fairly pedestrian performance and uncomfortable seats, while the overview frames the Soul as a practical, stylish choice for shoppers who want something more distinctive than a typical small hatchback.

Is the 2023 Kia Soul reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The user review summary also points to a dependable ownership experience, with owners highlighting the Soul as a car they appreciate for the long haul and one they feel good about living with day to day.

The expert review reinforces that theme by describing the Soul as a well-rounded small car with competent driving dynamics and a strong value proposition. Kia’s warranty coverage also helps reduce ownership anxiety, especially if you plan to keep the car for several years.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car was maintained well and does not have hidden wear from prior use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Kia Soul?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not tell you everything about prior maintenance or cosmetic wear. A pre-purchase inspection is especially useful on a used Soul because you want to confirm seat condition, interior wear, and that the car’s features work as expected. Focus on overall condition and equipment level, since the base model leaves out some desirable convenience and safety items.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base LX gets an 8-inch touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster, while higher trims add a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless phone charging, and additional USB ports. Cloth seats are standard, and dual-zone automatic climate control is standard on all but the base LX trim level.
• Powertrain: The 2023 Soul uses a single 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower, paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The review notes that the transmission avoids many of the usual CVT drawbacks and helps the car feel stress-free in everyday driving.
• Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and a driver attention monitor. Moving up to the Soul S adds lane change assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and automatic high beams.
• Infotainment: The base model gets an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while higher trims get a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and wired smartphone integration. Voice recognition is standard on Soul S and higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: Most models are rated at 28 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, while the EX is rated at 29 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. The review also notes an observed average of 29.1 mpg in testing.

Which 2023 Kia Soul trim should I buy?

The 2023 Kia Soul is offered in 4 trim levels: LX, S, EX, and GT-Line.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Soul’s core personality, standard wireless smartphone integration, and the basic infotainment setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but you give up several convenience and safety upgrades found higher up.
• S: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds important safety equipment like blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane change assist, and automatic high beams. If you want the strongest mix of price and features, this is the one to focus on.
• EX: This trim is the better pick if you want more comfort and convenience, including the larger touchscreen with navigation, wireless charging, and additional USB ports. It suits you if you plan to spend more time in the car and want a more polished daily driver.
• GT-Line: This is the style-focused choice, with the sportiest appearance and available upgrades like the GT-Line Technology Package. It makes the most sense if you care most about looks and want the most fully equipped Soul, but it is not the value leader.

The safety-package gap is worth noting: several advanced driver-assistance features are not standard on the base LX, so the S is the smarter starting point for most used buyers.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Kia Soul?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,969 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.72% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 79.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,718, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Kia Soul's resale value?

The current average of $16,856 sits slightly below last year's $17,690.

That softer pricing suggests the Soul is currently in a buyer-friendly phase, which can work against a future seller if the market stays loose. If you buy at a strong price now and keep the car in good condition, you may be better positioned later when supply tightens or demand shifts. The Soul’s broad appeal and value reputation should help support interest, but resale will still depend heavily on trim, condition, and mileage.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Kia Soul safe?

The 2023 Kia Soul earns top “Good” ratings from IIHS in all crash-test categories, along with an “Acceptable” rating for child-seat anchor ease of use. It also earns a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA, with four stars in frontal and rollover crash testing, and five stars for side-impact protection.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Kia made several driver-assist features standard for 2023, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and a driver attention monitor. The Soul S adds lane change assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The GT-Line Technology Package adds junction-turning detection, navigation-based adaptive cruise control, and Highway Drive Assist with automated lane centering.

One caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard across the lineup, and the package-based approach means you may need to move up trims to get the equipment you want.

Should I buy a 2023 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.72% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 update adds more standard driver-assist features and a revised trim lineup, which makes it a more appealing used buy than earlier versions.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of updated features, strong owner satisfaction, and softer pricing, the 2023 is the smart target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years, but the 2023’s added standard equipment and current market value make it the cleaner choice for most shoppers.
