Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?

Generally — the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 earns 4.33/5 from owners and 7.83/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise its stylish design, advanced technology, and comfortable ride. They also like the variety of options and the improved interior compared with older models. In use, that lines up with the Sierra’s upscale positioning and its appeal if you want a full-size truck that feels more premium than purely work-focused.

The trade-offs are familiar for a truck trying to do a lot: some buyers find the tech-heavy cabin a bit much, and cabin quality still trails some rivals. City parking can also be a challenge without the right aids. Even so, the Sierra 1500’s broad trim range and luxury-leaning setup make it a strong fit if you want capability with a more polished feel.

Good and great deals account for 35.0% of listings, which is a decent sign that you can still find value if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers describe it as dependable and appreciate the truck’s improved interior and broad range of options. The owner feedback also points to a vehicle many people feel good about living with over time, especially when they want a truck that can serve as both a daily driver and a long-haul companion.

On the expert side, the diesel powertrain is described as lively, and the 10-speed automatic helps keep it in its optimal power range. That supports the sense that the Sierra can feel composed and confident in regular use. The cost-effectiveness notes also mention a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some owners raise concerns about engine problems, so a careful history check matters.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report on any truck you’re seriously considering, especially if it has higher mileage or a long option list. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing because the Sierra’s tech-heavy setup and wide trim spread can hide meaningful differences in condition and equipment. Focus on how well the cabin, electronics, and powertrain have held up, since those are the areas most likely to shape your ownership experience.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Pro keeps things simpler with a 7-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, Bluetooth, and a more straightforward cabin layout. Higher trims add more luxury and convenience, while the Denali Ultimate brings nearly every feature optional on other trims, including massaging front seats, a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, and unique interior details. If you want the best value, the SLE is the trim that adds a strong mix of comfort and tech without jumping all the way to luxury pricing.
• Powertrain: You can choose a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter Duramax turbocharged inline-six diesel, a 5.3-liter V8, or a 6.2-liter V8. The diesel is the standout for torque and efficiency, while the V8s suit buyers who want more traditional truck power.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and Teen Driver. Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, GM’s Safety Alert seat, and Super Cruise. Some of the more advanced features are reserved for upper trims.
• Infotainment: The base Pro uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other trims get a 13.4-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Google-connected apps and a more advanced interface.
• Fuel efficiency: The Duramax turbodiesel with RWD returns 24 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. With 4WD, it returns 22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. The gas turbo-four returns 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, while the 5.3-liter V8 returns 16 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.

Which 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the simplest choice, and it makes sense if you want the Sierra’s core capability without paying for the newer, more complicated cabin tech. It keeps the 7-inch touchscreen and the more traditional interior layout, so it suits buyers who value straightforward function over flash.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, a larger touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital instrument panel. It gives you a big step up in comfort and tech without moving into luxury-truck pricing.
• Elevation: This trim builds on the SLE and opens the door to more options and packages. It makes sense if you want a more customized setup and like the idea of moving up without jumping straight to leather and premium-luxury territory.
• SLT: This is the right pick if you want a more upscale cabin, since it adds leather upholstery, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, memory settings for the driver’s seat, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. It’s a strong middle ground for buyers who want comfort to matter as much as capability.
• AT4: This is the off-road-oriented choice, with standard 4WD, skid plates, a lifted suspension, a two-speed transfer case, and an upgraded air filter. It suits you if you want trail capability rather than just appearance.
• AT4X: This is the more serious off-road model, developed with AEV and equipped with steel bumpers, an integrated front winch, 33-inch mud-terrain tires, additional skid plates, upgraded Multimatic dampers, and front-and-rear electronically locking differentials. It’s the one to choose if off-road hardware is your priority.
• Denali: This is the luxury-focused trim with unique styling, a Bose premium audio system, ventilated front seats, wireless device charging, and a camera view of the truck bed. It’s the better fit if you want premium comfort without going all the way to the top.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the flagship and the most fully equipped version, with massaging front seats, a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, 22-inch wheels, an integrated Kicker sound system in the Multi-Pro tailgate, and distinctive interior detailing. It’s the trim for buyers who want the most upscale Sierra experience.

The safety package is strongest on the Denali Ultimate, which gets every available driver-assistance feature, including Super Cruise.

Should I buy a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.80% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds the Denali Ultimate luxury trim and broad tech upgrades.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $41,881, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $44,829 average.
• It brought a major redesign with more luxury and utility.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $47,997, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $44,829 average.
