Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?

Generally — the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise its stylish design, advanced technology, and comfortable ride. They also like the variety of options and the improved interior compared with older models. In use-case terms, that makes it appealing if you want a full-size truck that can feel more upscale and versatile than basic work-truck alternatives.

The trade-offs are familiar for a truck trying to do a lot: too much tech can make it feel busy, cabin quality still trails some rivals, and city parking can be awkward without help. Even so, the market signal is favorable, with 36.6% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. Drivers describe it as comfortable, advanced, and improved over older versions, while also pointing to concerns about engine problems for long-term ownership.

The expert review also emphasizes that the Sierra’s diesel setup is lively and that the truck feels smooth and composed on the road. That combination suggests strong day-to-day dependability if you choose carefully and keep up with maintenance.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the truck’s condition and service history match its premium positioning.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.1% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re shopping higher-mileage examples or trucks with more advanced equipment. Focus on overall condition, how the tech works, and whether the truck’s features match the trim level you expect.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Pro keeps things simpler with a 7-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, Bluetooth, and remote keyless entry, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The SLE brings heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a larger touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Powertrain: You can find a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel, and two V8 options. The diesel is the standout for its lively feel and strong torque, while the gas turbo-four is the efficiency-minded starting point.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and Teen Driver. Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, Safety Alert Seat, and Super Cruise.
• Infotainment: Base models use a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get a 13.4-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The updated system also includes Google-connected apps and a logical layout, though it can feel busy.
• Fuel efficiency: The gas turbo-four returns 19 mpg city and 22 mpg highway, while the Duramax turbodiesel returns 24 mpg city and 29 mpg highway with RWD, or 22 mpg city and 27 mpg highway with 4WD.

Which 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the simplest choice if you want the Sierra’s core capability without the more complicated tech-heavy setup. It keeps the 7-inch touchscreen and the more straightforward interior layout, which may suit you if you prefer a work-truck feel.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a strong mix of comfort and tech, including heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a larger touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Elevation: Choose this if you want much of the SLE’s equipment with a different look and more flexibility for options and packages.
• SLT: This is the step up for you if leather upholstery, memory settings, and a more premium cabin matter more than keeping costs down.
• AT4: Pick this if you want the off-road-oriented setup, including standard 4WD, skid plates, a lifted suspension, a two-speed transfer case, and an upgraded air filter.
• AT4X: This is the most trail-focused version, with steel bumpers, an integrated front winch, mud-terrain tires, upgraded dampers, and locking differentials.
• Denali: This is the luxury-focused choice if you want features like a Bose premium audio system, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, and a bed-view camera.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the top pick if you want the most upscale Sierra experience, with massaging front seats, a 12-speaker Bose system, unique interior details, and nearly every major feature available.

The safety package expands significantly on higher trims, and the Denali Ultimate gets every available driver-assistance feature, including Super Cruise.

The current average of $43,758 sits slightly below last year's $48,580.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices stay under pressure. The Sierra’s broad appeal, premium positioning, and strong feature set should help support demand, especially for well-equipped trims.

Should I buy a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.93% compared with last year.

• It brings a major makeover with a bolder design, a more lavish interior, and new high-end trims.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $46,567, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $43,758 average.
