Why it stands out
The 2023 Dodge Durango stands out by blending SUV practicality with a muscle-car personality. Dodge describes it as “part SUV, part muscle car,” and that attitude is central to its appeal. It also sits in a long-running third generation that dates back to the 2011 model year, which helps explain why the Durango has such a familiar shape and formula even as Dodge has continued to lean harder into performance.
For 2023, the Durango lineup starts with the SXT trim and moves up through the GT, R/T, Citadel, and SRT 392. Changes for the year include standard heated front seats, optional forward collision warning for the Durango SXT, and new colors that bring the total palette to eight. The biggest news, though, is the return of the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat with its supercharged V8 engine, now as a regular production model. That gives the Durango a rare mix of family-size utility and serious straight-line performance.
Its strengths are clear: stylish design and powerful V8 engines are major draws, and owners also praise its styling, performance, spaciousness, and ride comfort. The tradeoffs are just as important, though. Advanced safety features are not standard, and fuel economy is poor with the V8 engines.

I am a Durango girl, this is number 2 for me. They get great gas mileage for the get up & go the V6 has. Plenty of room to haul all of my animal foods & plants around. Most comfortable ride I’ve ever experienced. My most favorite vehicle ever!

Great SUV for the money. I like the styling and all the features. Handles well but the ride is a little rough. The RT is throttle responsive for the weight of this vehicle but the city gas mileage is horrible.

| Year-Round Low | $29,841 |
| Year-Round High | $33,944 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,733 |

Prices are up 6.30% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 4,311 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2023 Dodge Durango a good car?
Yes — with a 4.67/5 user rating, the 2023 Dodge Durango is a strong fit if you want a three-row SUV with a more muscular personality. It earns 7.17/10 from our experts.
The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Performance.
Owners consistently praise its styling, powerful performance, and spaciousness, and many also call out the comfortable ride and strong gas mileage from the V6. The main trade-offs are interior quality concerns, especially in the back seat, and depreciation after purchase.
That lines up with the Durango’s use case: you’re getting family-size utility with a performance-first attitude, not a mainstream value play. With 34.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 Dodge Durango reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its long-term appeal, comfort, and strong performance. The V6 is singled out for good gas mileage, which can make the Durango easier to live with over time if you’re not chasing V8 power.
The expert evaluation also notes that the Durango’s powertrain warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles, which helps support ownership confidence. For used buyers, the bigger long-term risk is less about outright durability than about how previous owners treated the vehicle and whether higher-output versions were maintained carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Dodge Durango?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean, because condition and prior use matter a lot on a vehicle with this much performance spread. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a V8 model or a higher-trim example with more equipment. Focus on wear, maintenance records, and whether the cabin and exterior match the seller’s description.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SXT starts the lineup, and the GT, R/T, Citadel, SRT 392, and SRT Hellcat each add more equipment or performance character. Base-trim models miss some of the richer interior touches and feature content you’ll find higher up the range.
- Powertrain: You can shop the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, the 5.7-liter Hemi V8, the 6.4-liter Hemi V8, or the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 in the Hellcat. Efficiency is strongest with the V6, while the V8s trade fuel economy for much stronger acceleration.
- Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are standard, but forward collision warning is only standard on the Citadel and part of an option package on other models. Lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking are also standard only on the Citadel, and they are not available on the base SXT.
- Infotainment: SXT and GT models use an 8.4-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and Bluetooth. The Citadel and the two SRT models get a 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus the newer Uconnect 5 system.
- Fuel efficiency: The base V6 with rear-wheel drive is rated at 21 mpg combined. The 5.7-liter V8 returns 17 mpg combined, the 6.4-liter V8 returns 15 mpg combined, and the supercharged Hellcat is rated at 13 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?
The 2023 Dodge Durango is offered in 5 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, Citadel, and SRT 392.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Durango’s core three-row utility at the lowest price. It’s the trim to consider if you want the shape, space, and V6 power without paying for the more expensive performance and luxury upgrades.
- GT: The GT is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more visual flair and can be dressed up with appearance packages while staying on the more affordable side of the lineup. If you want a nicer-looking Durango without jumping into V8 territory, this is the trim to focus on.
- R/T: Choose the R/T if you want the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 and the stronger performance that comes with it. It’s the right pick if you care more about power and sound than fuel economy.
- Citadel: The Citadel is the comfort-oriented choice, with more luxurious interior content and the larger 10.1-inch touchscreen. It also stands out because more advanced driver-assistance features are standard here than on lower trims.
- SRT 392: This is the performance-focused trim if you want serious speed without going all the way to the Hellcat. It adds the 6.4-liter Hemi V8 and the most aggressive driving character in the standard lineup.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the Citadel gets the most standard driver-assistance tech, while the base SXT misses out on several key features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Dodge Durango?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,311 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.30% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 87.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $29,841, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Dodge Durango's resale value?
The current average of $33,733 sits slightly above last year's $31,733.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition. The current pricing also shows that demand is still healthy enough to keep values from softening too quickly.
For a future seller, that means trim choice and condition will matter a lot. A well-kept example with desirable equipment should be easier to move than a stripped or heavily worn one, especially because shoppers are still responding to the Durango’s mix of space and performance.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Dodge Durango safe?
The 2023 Dodge Durango earns Good ratings in the IIHS original-format moderate front overlap, side, and roof strength tests, but it receives a Marginal score in the driver-side small overlap front test. The NHTSA gives it a four-star overall safety rating, with five-star ratings in the side crash test, four-star ratings in the frontal crash test, and four-star rollover ratings for RWD models; AWD models get a three-star rollover rating.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are standard across the lineup, but Dodge keeps more advanced driver-assistance features limited. Forward collision warning is standard only on the Citadel and optional on other trims, while lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking are also standard only on the Citadel.
The main safety caveat is the mixed crash-test picture, especially the Marginal small-overlap result and the lower rollover rating on AWD versions.
Should I buy a 2023 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.30% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The return of the Durango SRT Hellcat makes this year especially notable if you want the most extreme performance version in the lineup.
The bottom line: The 2023 Durango makes the most sense if you want this generation’s familiar three-row formula with a broad trim range and the added appeal of the Hellcat’s return. If you’re shopping on a tighter budget, a nearby year may still work, but the 2023 is the one to target if you want the strongest mix of availability, performance, and owner satisfaction.
