Is the 2023 BMW iX a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.3/5 user-rated electric SUV with an expert rating of 7.8/10. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

The 2023 BMW iX stands out as a premium electric SUV with a sharper performance edge thanks to the M60 variant, while still keeping the model’s core focus on luxury and space. Its cabin is a highlight, with premium materials and a spacious layout that support its upscale mission.

The trade-offs are clear: the design may be polarizing, and the added performance comes with a steep price. That makes it a better fit if you want luxury and speed in one package than if you’re shopping strictly for value.

42.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 BMW iX reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2023 BMW iX is positioned as a premium electric SUV with a strong emphasis on refinement, and the expert notes reinforce that it’s built around comfort, technology, and upscale execution. Its electric powertrain and battery-backed architecture also support the kind of smooth, low-drama driving experience many used-EV shoppers want.

BMW says the iX xDrive50 can travel up to 324 miles on a full charge, while the M60 can go up to 280 miles, and the model’s regenerative braking helps recover energy during driving. BMW also includes three years or 36,000 miles of no-cost scheduled maintenance through Ultimate Care.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the battery, charging behavior, and overall EV systems have been cared for consistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW iX?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a premium EV where repair costs can be high. Focus on overall condition, charging habits, and whether the vehicle has been maintained according to schedule. If possible, confirm how the battery has been used over time and whether the car has any signs of heavy fast-charging or unusual wear.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base iX xDrive50 emphasizes luxury, space, and a premium interior, while the M60 adds a much stronger performance focus and a more expensive, high-output character.
• Powertrain: The xDrive50 uses dual electric motors with all-wheel drive and 516 horsepower, while the M60 also uses dual motors but increases output to 610 horsepower with launch control activated.
• Safety package: Every new iX includes BMW’s Active Driving Assistant with forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, traffic-sign recognition, active park distance control, automatic collision notification, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview camera, and a safe-exit system. Driver’s Assistance Pro adds Active Driving Assistant Pro and Parking Assistant Professional, including lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: The iX uses a 14.9-inch curved touchscreen with iDrive 8, plus voice control, gesture control, and a rotary dial. It also comes with a 12-speaker audio system, with upgraded sound systems available.
• Range & charging: BMW says the xDrive50 can travel up to 324 miles on a full charge and recover up to 90 miles in 10 minutes on a DC fast charger. The M60 can go up to 280 miles and recover 90 miles in 10 minutes. The M60 also takes 12 hours to fully charge on a 240-volt charging station.
• Battery health: For a used EV, you should check battery state-of-health, review how often the car was charged at home versus on DC fast chargers, and confirm how much of the battery warranty remains.

Which 2023 BMW iX trim should I buy?

The 2023 BMW iX is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive50, M60.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive50: This is the better-value choice if you want the iX’s core strengths — premium materials, spaciousness, strong range, and a high-tech cabin — without paying for the M60’s extra performance.
• M60: Choose this if you want the most powerful and quickest version, along with the sharper performance character BMW built into the 2023 update. It’s the right pick if acceleration matters more to you than price.

BMW’s standard safety suite is already well equipped, and the Driver’s Assistance Pro package adds more advanced assistance features if you want them.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW iX?

This is a buyer-friendly market for the 2023 BMW iX, with enough inventory and deal activity to give you negotiating room.

• Deal availability: 42.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,048 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.51% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 88.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $45,074, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 BMW iX's resale value?

The current average of $46,509 sits slightly below last year's $47,224.

That softer pricing suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make the iX easier to acquire now than it was a year ago. For a future seller, that also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle presents against newer listings.

Because the iX sits in the premium EV space, buyers will likely continue to compare it closely with other luxury electric SUVs. A well-kept example with strong equipment and clean history should hold more appeal than one with visible wear or a weak service record.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 BMW iX safe?

The 2023 BMW iX has not been rated by NHTSA or IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Driver’s Assistance Pro adds Active Driving Assistant Pro and Parking Assistant Professional, including lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control. That package is an important upgrade if you want more advanced driver assistance than the standard setup provides.

Should I buy a 2023 BMW iX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 42.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.51% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 update adds the more powerful M60 variant, giving the iX a stronger performance edge.

Consider the 2022 if:

• It’s the first North American BMW all-electric SUV and focuses on comfort, range, and a single xDrive50 setup.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger performance story and a broader used-market selection, the 2023 is the better path. If your priority is simply getting into an iX at the lowest possible price, the 2022 can still make sense as a more straightforward, comfort-focused alternative.
