Is the 2023 BMW 7 Series a good car?

The 2023 BMW 7 Series is a compelling flagship if you want comfort and driving polish, but you should be ready for some usability and design compromises. It earns a user rating of 1/5 and an expert rating of 6.7/10.

The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Safety.

Its strengths are clear in the way it blends luxury, ride quality, and handling into one package, and it is aimed at buyers who want a large luxury sedan that still feels composed and engaging from behind the wheel. The trade-offs are just as clear: the technology interface can be frustrating, and the styling is likely to divide opinion.

The market also shows 37.0% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 BMW 7 Series reliable?

The 2023 BMW 7 Series is presented as a polished flagship with a strong comfort-and-performance balance, but its long-term appeal depends on how much you value its advanced systems. The expert review highlights smooth acceleration and braking, plus a highway driving assistant that reduces fatigue on long trips.

The performance notes also point to a calm, confident driving character when you’re not pushing hard, which supports the idea of a well-sorted luxury sedan. On the cost side, the base six-cylinder model is positioned as the more sensible choice, and the review notes that most drivers should be happy with it.

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that a complex luxury car can be expensive to live with if its tech-heavy features become troublesome over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW 7 Series?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car with advanced electronics and luxury features. Focus on overall condition, how the technology operates, and whether the car’s equipment matches the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 740i is the more sensible choice for most buyers, while the 760i xDrive adds a more powerful V8 and all-wheel drive. The cabin is upscale across the range, but the more elaborate rear-seat and theater-screen features are the kinds of extras that can separate a well-equipped example from a simpler one.
• Powertrain: The 740i uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, while the 760i xDrive upgrades to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. The six-cylinder is the efficiency play, and the V8 is the performance choice.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, lane-keep assist, a traffic-sign reader, adaptive headlights, parking sensors, and safe exit warnings. The optional Driving Assistance Professional package adds a hands-free automated driving system for highways.
• Infotainment: The car uses iDrive 8 with touchscreen, central dial, and voice control. The system is feature-rich, but the menu structure can be complicated, and the theater screen adds another layer of complexity.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 740i is estimated to return 31 mpg in combined city and highway driving, while the 760i is estimated to return 26 mpg.

Which 2023 BMW 7 Series trim should I buy?

The 2023 BMW 7 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 740i and 760i xDrive.

Here's the short version:

• 740i: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it delivers the core 7 Series experience with the six-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain and the comfort-focused luxury character that defines the car. If you want the flagship feel without paying for the V8, this is the trim to start with.
• 760i xDrive: Choose this if you want the strongest performance in the lineup and all-wheel drive. It adds the V8’s extra power, but it also pushes the car further into expensive territory.

The optional Driving Assistance Professional package adds the hands-free highway driving system.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW 7 Series?

This looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 706 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.04% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 82.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $60,130, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 BMW 7 Series's resale value?

The current average of $60,130 sits slightly below last year's $70,775.

That drop suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can help you get into the car at a lower entry point. For a future seller, though, it also means you should expect depreciation pressure to remain part of the ownership equation.

If you buy well now, you may reduce some of that downside by starting from a lower price base. The key is to focus on condition, equipment, and history so your example stands out later.

Is the 2023 BMW 7 Series safe?

The 2023 BMW 7 Series has not been crash tested by either NHTSA or IIHS yet.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, lane-keep assist, a traffic-sign reader, adaptive headlights, parking sensors, and safe exit warnings. The optional Driving Assistance Professional package adds a hands-free automated driving system for highways.

That package is the main safety-related upgrade to look for if you want the most advanced driver assistance available. The review also notes that the highway driving assistant is smooth and confidence-inspiring, with automated braking, acceleration, and steering at speeds up to 85 mph.

Should I buy a 2023 BMW 7 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 37.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.04% compared with last year.
• The 2023 brings a redesigned flagship look with strong comfort, ride quality, and handling.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $65,914, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $60,130 average.
• BMW added the plug-in hybrid 750e and lightly updated the infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2023 is the smarter starting point because it already delivers the core flagship experience at a lower average price. If you’re willing to spend more for the updated lineup and added plug-in hybrid option, the 2024 is the alternative to watch.
