Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW 3 Series stands out as a refreshed version of BMW’s best-selling car, with sportier styling, interior design updates, and technology upgrades. It keeps the 3 Series formula focused on a driver-oriented cockpit while adding sleeker styling and a broader dose of new technology, which helps it remain competitive in the sports sedan segment. Its strengths are easy to appreciate: stylish design, great ride quality, and a quiet cabin.
There are also a couple of drawbacks to keep in mind. A manual transmission is not available, and the interior materials can feel cheap. Even so, the 2023 BMW 3 Series remains appealing for buyers who want a polished, comfortable sports sedan with updated design and modern tech.

Handles better and easier to drive than my X3M comp. Comfortable and fast enough to make me smile in the M340i form. Wife loves it too snd she drives a M2comp.

How much does the 2023 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $34,575 |
| Year-Round Low | $34,575 |
| Year-Round High | $37,390 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $37,385 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.52% |
Prices have softened 7.52% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,764 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2023 BMW 3 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.
The 2023 3 Series is positioned as a refreshed, driver-oriented sports sedan with sportier styling, interior updates, and added technology. That lines up with its strengths: stylish design, great ride quality, and a quiet cabin.
The main trade-offs are that a manual transmission is not available and the interior materials can feel cheap. If you want a polished compact luxury sedan that emphasizes comfort and modern tech, this year fits that brief well.
35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 3 Series is described as a familiar, evolutionary update to BMW’s core sports sedan formula, with a driver-focused cockpit and modern technology. Its overall setup points to a car that should feel well sorted in everyday use, especially if you value a quiet cabin and comfortable ride quality.
The performance notes also support that impression: the car is quiet in traffic, precise in steering, and composed over mixed roads. BMW’s standard maintenance and ownership experience can still depend heavily on how the car was equipped and cared for, so a clean service history matters.
For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is buying a neglected example with expensive wear items or deferred maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW 3 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or more equipment. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior damage, and whether the car’s features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, and M340i. The 330i is the entry point, while the M340i adds the strongest performance and more aggressive exterior details. The 330i and 330e can also be equipped with M Sport styling, which adds visual and cabin upgrades.
- Powertrain: The 330i and 330e use a twin-turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while the M340i uses a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six. All versions use an eight-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive is standard, and xDrive all-wheel drive is available.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes a rear view camera, LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, BMW Assist eCall, Active Guard, and the Active Protection System. The Driving Assistance Package adds active blind spot detection, lane-departure warning, park-distance control, and pedestrian and frontal collision warnings. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds Extended Traffic Jam Assistance and Active Driving Assistant Pro.
- Infotainment: The cabin uses BMW iDrive 8 with the BMW Curved Display, which combines a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. Wireless device charging is available, and over-the-air updates are standard.
- Fuel efficiency: The 330i is rated at 25 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. The 330e returns 28 mpg combined on gas and 75 MPGe combined in electric mode, with up to 22 miles of electric-only range. The M340i is rated at 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.
Which 2023 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2023 BMW 3 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the best-value starting point if you want the core 3 Series experience without paying for extra power. It still gives you the refreshed styling, iDrive 8, the curved display, and the balanced ride quality that define the car.
- 330e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid efficiency and the ability to drive on electric power for short trips. It suits you best if your commute or daily driving can take advantage of the electric range.
- M340i: Pick this if you want the strongest performance in the lineup. It adds the inline-six and the quickest acceleration, making it the right choice if driving enjoyment matters most.
The safety package is spread across bundled options, so check carefully to make sure the features you want are included on any used example.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW 3 Series?
This looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep distress pricing.
- Deal availability: 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,764 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.52% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $34,575, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $34,575 sits slightly below last year's $37,385.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and equipment rather than broad market momentum alone.
Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold up better than neglected ones, especially if they have clean history reports and strong equipment content.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

IIHS has not yet rated the 2023 model, and the 2022 version missed the top-tier Plus distinction because of a Poor headlights result.
Should I buy a 2023 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.52% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings a refreshed cabin, updated tech, and a more modern driver-focused layout.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $28,551, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $34,575 average.
- It offers familiar 3 Series driving character with easy-to-use technology.
The bottom line: If you want the newer cabin, updated tech, and stronger market availability, the 2023 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable with the older setup, the 2022 is the value play.
