CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 6,169 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,415, 30.9% of 2022 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Tacoma 4.36 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
80.6% of 2022 Tacoma models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a small pickup that still draws buyers with its off-road ability, even as it shows its age. It also offers modern tech and safety features, and its technology is described as easy to use. For shoppers who want a smaller alternative to a full-size pickup, it remains a strong choice, especially if the truck will spend part of its life commuting and part of it heading out for camping, kayaking, or mountain biking trips.
Its appeal is also practical: the bed is well suited to hauling supplies for a weekend project, and a manual transmission is available. At the same time, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma has some clear drawbacks, including an underwhelming base engine, a cramped back seat, and poor ride quality.

It has every feature I was looking for except BSM. Definitely a good value compared to others with the same opinions and miles. There really isnt any other models out there to compare it too. It is an awesome truck.

We have owned it 4 days. The Tacoma has great reviews and is very reliable. The V6 engine has enough power and still gets decent gas mileage.

Reviewed a 2022 Toyota SR5 V6 Double Cab 4WD on Feb 7, 2023
For years, all I wanted was a Toyota Tacoma, but the price tag always scared me off. Finally, I had the opportunity to purchase a brand new 2022 Taco, at a lower price than a used one (crazy times). While I loved the idea of owning vehicle, and of course, the looks, usability seemed to have been lacking. For the price, the Tacoma seems to lack in features that their competitors have (Colorado, Canyon, 1500, etc), and the seating is quite cramped. Anyone sitting in the backseat, with the exception of my 5 year old daughter was uncomfortable. In addition, the finish details lacked in quality (plastics), again, for the price. No doubt that the Tacoma has built an exceptional reputation based on reliability, but I feel like the competitors are starting the unseat the mid-sized stalwart. After 4k miles, I sold the truck and went in a different direction. All said, damn that truck looked good!

Drivers consistently praise its reliability, fuel economy, and off-road capability. The user feedback also points to strong resale value and solid performance in rough terrain.
The trade-offs are familiar: the base engine is underpowered, the technology can feel limited, and some versions have cramped seating. That lines up with the overview, which frames this truck as a smaller pickup that works well for commuting and weekend adventures, especially if you want a truck that can split time between daily use and outdoor trips.
With 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback highlights reliability, trouble-free ownership, and a truck you can count on, especially when you want durability and strong resale value.
The expert evaluation also describes it as supremely trusty and durable, built for demanding use. Toyota’s maintenance-friendly reputation is reinforced by the truck’s straightforward, familiar design and its focus on long-term toughness.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about novelty and more about age-related wear, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title alone does not tell you how hard a truck has been used. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension wear, steering feel, brake condition, and signs of off-road abuse. You should also pay close attention to cabin condition and rear-seat space if you plan to use it as a family vehicle.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR starts with 16-inch steel wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen, and the Toyota Safety Sense suite, while higher trims add features like fog lights, an 8-inch screen, alloy wheels, leather upholstery, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof. The base trim leaves out several comfort and convenience upgrades.
- Powertrain: The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft. The V6 is the stronger choice, and the TRD models are also available with a six-speed manual transmission.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional.
- Infotainment: The base truck uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while every trim but the SR gets an 8-inch touchscreen. The system supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, and the interface is described as easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.7-liter four-cylinder with rear-wheel drive returns 20 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The V6 with rear-wheel drive returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With 4WD, the four-cylinder returns 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, while the V6 returns 18 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. The V6 with manual transmission and 4WD returns 17 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, with the basic 7-inch touchscreen, steel wheels, and standard Toyota Safety Sense. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Tacoma lineup, but it leaves out several comfort and convenience upgrades.
- SR5: This adds fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen. It is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it improves everyday livability without jumping too far in price.
- TRD Sport: This trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a TRD-tuned sport suspension, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. It suits you if you want a more polished daily driver with extra convenience features.
- TRD Off-Road: This version adds all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, and a 4.2-inch color display in the instrument panel. It is the right pick if you want the most trail-focused setup in the lineup.
- Limited: This trim shifts toward comfort with leather upholstery, JBL premium audio, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof. It is the choice if you care more about road comfort and upscale features than trail hardware.
- TRD Pro: This top trim adds unique exterior styling, underbody skid plates, LED fog lights, a TRD-tuned suspension, and a TRD sport exhaust. It is the most specialized choice if you want the most rugged, off-road-oriented Tacoma.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,141 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.27% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,028, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $33,408 sits slightly below last year's $34,184.
That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now. For a future seller, the softer trend means you should expect pricing pressure if the truck is not especially clean, well-equipped, or well maintained.
Even so, the Tacoma’s reputation for durability and strong demand helps support long-term value. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintenance records organized, you should be in a better position when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional.
The backup camera is standard, but the image is described as very grainy, so you should not rely on it alone when backing up.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.27% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It balances commuter-friendly tech with strong off-road ability and a manual transmission option.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,329, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $33,408 average.
- It offers broad configuration choices and standard dual-zone climate control on V6 models.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $36,348, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $33,408 average.
- It leans harder into reliability, rugged personality, and strong resale appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and proven capability, the 2022 is the primary path to consider. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money while keeping much of the same core appeal.
