How much does the 2022 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 8.46% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 4,019 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Subaru Forester earns a 4.62/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, safety features, and spacious interior, and many also value its AWD capability and technology. The Forester’s practical, all-around SUV character fits shoppers who want a roomy, easy-to-live-with crossover rather than something sporty. The main trade-offs are its potentially polarizing styling and fairly pedestrian performance. Even so, the market still shows 36.8% good or great deals, which suggests there’s room to shop carefully.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels comfortable, safe, and dependable in everyday use, with many drivers describing it as an excellent all-around SUV. That same practical reputation is reinforced by the Forester’s durable, easy-to-live-with character and its strong all-weather capability. Subaru also positions it as a tool for daily living that’s known for durability and holding value over time.

The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that you should still verify condition carefully, especially on higher-use examples.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a Wilderness model or a higher-mileage example. Focus on overall condition, signs of off-road use, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim you’re paying for. Pay close attention to the cabin, tires, and underbody if the SUV has been used on rough roads.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Forester comes in base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring trim levels. The base model starts at a lower price point, but the cabin and equipment are described as more functional than upscale, while the Wilderness adds extra clearance, more body cladding, and a dirt-friendly interior.
• Powertrain: The Forester uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. It is described as adequate rather than quick, and the Wilderness version adds a CVT design Subaru says improves initial torque supply.
• Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also included among the standard and available safety features.
• Infotainment: Base trims get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Starlink connected services. Wilderness, Limited, and Touring trims get an 8-inch screen, plus navigation and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The Wilderness is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 25.9 mpg.

Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the entry point if you want standard all-wheel drive, the core Forester practicality, and the lowest starting price. It makes sense if you care most about value and can live without the upgraded screen and convenience features found higher up.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades without pushing too far up the price ladder. It also unlocks a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, which makes it a smart middle-ground choice.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a little more personality without moving into the more specialized Wilderness setup. It sits in the middle of the lineup and keeps the Forester’s practical strengths intact.
• Wilderness: This is the trim to buy if you want the most capability and the most distinctive character. It adds extra ground clearance, all-terrain tires, a front skid plate, a full-size spare, and a 180-degree forward-view camera, making it the clear pick for rougher terrain.
• Limited: This is a strong choice if you want the larger 8-inch screen and a more upscale feature set without going all the way to Touring. It balances comfort and equipment well.
• Touring: Pick this if you want the most fully equipped Forester, including DriverFocus. It’s the top-end choice for shoppers who want the most convenience and driver-monitoring tech.

Touring trim adds DriverFocus, while the Wilderness, Limited, and Touring trims get the larger 8-inch screen.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,019 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.46% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,216, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $24,216 sits slightly below last year's $26,455.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability rather than broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples with the right equipment should still draw interest because the Forester’s practical reputation remains a selling point.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2022 Subaru Forester earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in all evaluations except rollover resistance, where it gets a four-star assessment.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester also includes a rear-seat reminder system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking. Touring trim adds DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction.

One caveat is that the review notes the new Forester had not yet been rated by IIHS at the time, though it was expected to retain the prior model’s Top Safety Pick+ status.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.46% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Subaru updated it with fresh design details, an upgraded EyeSight package, and improved utility features.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,910, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,216 average.
• It offers a straightforward value-focused setup with standard AWD and broad trim coverage.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $26,871, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,216 average.
• It adds next-generation EyeSight safety features and an improved standard infotainment system.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the sweet spot if you want the updated Forester formula without paying newer-model pricing. If your priority is the lowest purchase price, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want the latest refinements and can stretch your budget, the 2023 is worth a look.
