Subaru may not sell as many cars as Toyota or Honda do, but there’s no denying that the automaker knows its customers. Subaru’s die-hard fans love the brand for its outdoorsy attitude, and the Crosstrek is a great example of the things it does well. The slightly lifted SUV features signature quirky Subaru styling, a good deal of space, and a fuel-sipping hybrid powertrain. The standard Crosstrek comes with either a 2.0-liter or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 152 and 182 horsepower, respectively. The Crosstrek Hybrid gets two electric motors and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produce a combined 148 horsepower and 134 pound-feet of torque. Power reaches all four wheels through a continuously variable transmission. Though its on-paper specs look weak, instant torque from the electric motors helps move the compact SUV off the line with authority. Even with instant torque, the Crosstrek Hybrid won’t be winning any drag races. That said, the Hybrid is slightly quicker than the gas-powered model to 60 mph, and its added low-down torque helps it pull through rougher terrain. Standard all-wheel drive provides solid off-pavement traction and makes the Crosstrek Hybrid a true all-weather, all-season vehicle. It also helps the SUV feel more planted and confident in the corners than it has any business being. The Crosstrek Hybrid builds on the Limited model’s equipment. That means several upscale features as standard kit: 18-inch wheels, LED steering-responsive headlights, LED fog lights, black or gray leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift lever handle, push-button start, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a color LCD driver information display. Navigation is available. Subaru’s Starlink system gives owners the ability to remotely start, track, and interact with their vehicles via a smartphone app. The system allows for remote lock and climate controls as well, and it lets parents set boundaries on young drivers in their cars. Subaru also offers a concierge service that helps owners get restaurant and hotel reservations, concert and sporting event tickets, and service appointments. All Crosstrek trims come with Subaru EyeSight driver assistance tech, which includes automatic emergency braking, pre-collision throttle management, lane-keep assist, lane-departure alerts, sway warnings, lead vehicle start alert, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety hasn’t had a chance to rate the 2022 model yet, but 2021’s Subaru Crosstrek picked up a Top Safety Pick +, the highest IIHS rating available. The SUV earned “Good” ratings in all crash test categories, “Superior” scores for both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crash prevention, and a “Good+” score for the LATCH system’s ease of use, which is the highest rating the agency issues in that category. The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid starts at $36,770, which includes destination. Adding the only available options package drives the price to $39,270, and adds a moonroof, navigation, heated steering wheel, and a Harman Kardon sound system.
