CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru BRZ
overall

Summary
With 112 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,559.00, 29.5% of 2022 Subaru BRZs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru BRZ 4.29 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru BRZ stands out because it goes against much of Subaru’s usual formula. Instead of all-wheel drive and turbocharging, it is a two-door coupe with rear-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated engine, built to deliver a more satisfying driving experience. It also arrives with a restyled exterior, more power, and more tech features than its predecessor, while keeping the lineup simple with just Premium and Limited trim levels.
That combination makes the 2022 Subaru BRZ appealing to buyers who want a focused sports car that is fun to drive and easy to live with from a technology standpoint. It is also presented as an excellent value for money. The main compromise is practicality: the back seat is cramped, which fits the car’s purpose but limits everyday usefulness.

The car's features: The infotainment is slow, and the audio quality is terrible. Loud enough or just enjoyable enough for a regular commute. It offers an amazing 6-speed manual, easy to clutch in and out. However getting from first to second gear are a bit difficult, and you have to hold the clutch a little bit longer before shifting to prevent shaking. This car is so fun to drive. I love how direct the steering is and how it feels, also doesn't have to be too heavy in parking lots. It also rides surprisingly well for what it is. This car is definitely a good value, literally the cheapest RWD car i could find brand new at the time of purchase with amazing lease deal. I couldn't even afford a Honda Civic Si, or a Hyundai Veloster N. This car is just missing practicality, honestly if rear seats have more foot room (not knee room), and a tiny bit higher ride height, maybe 5.3 inches of ground clearance instead of 5.1? It can survive better with a lot of uneven pavement I see here in Vancouver. It's just missing that bit of practicality where I might want to switch to a different vehicle and wished I had the Honda Civic SI. Also the fuel economy is really bad considering it's still a 4 cylinder engine, and requiring a recommended 93 octane with high insurance makes it difficult to own. I would not compare it to any other car except maybe the Mazda Miata, or Hyundai Veloster N. Those are very different cars due to no one making any sports cars anymore.

The BRZ is a fantastic, not too expensive, sports car. Lots of nice features. But most of all amazing handling and a comfortable ride.

The model I purchased is the top trim line with pretty much all features available. I expected it to have lane keeping rather than only lane departure warning, also assumed that an option called Starlink would include ability to program for remote garage door operation. Small items and would not have changed decision to buy. Car seems like it will be very satisfactory. Feels great.

Its incredible, sporty, fun, comfortable, quiet. Dont be fooled by back seat, there is only room for 2 passengers but its a great spot for a backpack or large purse.

How much does the 2022 Subaru BRZ cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,595 |
| Year-Round Low | $25,088.18 |
| Year-Round High | $27,131.73 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,133 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.98% |
Prices have softened 1.98% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 112 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $25,088.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Subaru BRZ a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Subaru BRZ earns a 4.29/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating, which points to a car that resonates strongly with shoppers who want a focused sports coupe. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its sporty performance, fun driving experience, comfortable ride, engaging handling, and stylish design. The expert review also backs up that appeal by highlighting the BRZ’s more powerful engine, improved on-road manners, and easier-to-live-with tech.
The trade-offs are clear: the back seat is cramped, and some drivers want more power, a better audio system, and improved seating comfort. That fits the BRZ’s use case as a driver-focused coupe rather than a practical all-rounder.
With its simple lineup and strong value-for-money reputation, the BRZ makes the most sense if you want a fun-to-drive sports car that still feels approachable day to day. The market also shows 29.5% good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Subaru BRZ reliable?
Owners rate it 4.29/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels sporty, enjoyable, and comfortable enough to live with, while also being seen as a fantastic value for a sports car. That combination usually matters in the long run because it suggests owners are happy enough to keep the car and recommend it.
The expert review also supports the BRZ’s dependability story by emphasizing its straightforward naturally aspirated boxer engine, standard six-speed manual or automatic transmission, and a chassis that was improved for better road manners and less noise. Subaru’s five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and three-year/36,000-mile basic warranty add some ownership reassurance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about complexity and more about how the car was driven and maintained, so condition and service history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru BRZ?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a sports car can hide hard use even when it looks clean on paper. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear items, signs of track use, and overall condition. Pay close attention to the cabin and seating condition too, since the BRZ’s sporty layout and bolstered seats are part of the ownership experience.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Premium trim gets 17-inch wheels with Michelin Primacy tires, while the Limited trim rides on 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, plus Ultrasuede upholstery with red accent stitching and dual-mode heaters. The Limited also adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, steering responsive headlights, and reverse automatic braking on automatic models.
- Powertrain: The BRZ uses a 2.4-liter boxer-four engine with Toyota’s D-4S fuel-injection system, making 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. You can shop it with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, and the automatic was tuned to downshift quicker and hold gears longer.
- Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist tech is standard only on automatic-transmission models, and it includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-sway warning, lead vehicle start alert, and automatic high beams.
- Infotainment: You get a standard 8-inch touchscreen, a digital gauge cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and SiriusXM satellite radio. The digital cluster also adds sport mode and track mode displays.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA ratings are 25 mpg combined with the automatic and 22 mpg combined with the manual. The automatic is rated at 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, while the manual is rated at 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.
Which 2022 Subaru BRZ trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru BRZ is offered in 2 trim levels: Premium and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Premium: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core BRZ formula: rear-wheel drive, the 2.4-liter boxer engine, a six-speed manual or automatic, an 8-inch touchscreen, a digital gauge cluster, and standard smartphone integration. It makes the most sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable giving up the Limited’s extra comfort and safety equipment.
- Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the most complete version of the BRZ. It adds 18-inch wheels with grippier Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires, Ultrasuede upholstery, dual-mode heaters, and a fuller safety package with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, steering responsive headlights, and reverse automatic braking on automatic models.
The safety-package gap is important: EyeSight is standard only on automatic-transmission models, so if driver assistance matters to you, pay close attention to transmission choice.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru BRZ?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 112 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.98% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,088.18, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru BRZ's resale value?
The current average of $26,595 sits slightly below last year's $27,133.
That kind of softening suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to price more competitively. If you buy well now and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned later because the BRZ’s enthusiast appeal helps support demand.
The price trend also shows that this model year is not in a rising-price phase, so resale gains are less likely to come from market momentum alone. Instead, your best protection is buying a clean example, maintaining it carefully, and avoiding cars with questionable history.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.29/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru BRZ safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The BRZ gets Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assist tech for the first time, but only on automatic-transmission models. Standard features include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-sway warning, lead vehicle start alert, and automatic high beams. With either transmission, the Limited adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and steering responsive headlights, while automatic Limited models also get reverse automatic braking.
The main caveat is that safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS have not been released yet, so you should lean more heavily on the available driver-assistance equipment and the car’s condition when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru BRZ or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.29/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 model year brings a redesigned exterior, more power, and more tech features while keeping the lineup simple with Premium and Limited trims.
The bottom line: The 2022 BRZ is the right pick if you want the redesigned version with stronger performance and a better tech setup, especially if you value the car’s enthusiast-focused character. If you’re mainly shopping on price, a nearby year may still be worth comparing, but the 2022 stands out as the more modern and better-rounded choice in this generation.
