How much does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?

Prices have softened 10.82% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,148 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.

It is built as a full-size four-door luxury sedan aimed at executive transportation, and the data backs up that mission with a stylish design, premium interior materials, and great ride quality. The powertrain lineup also supports that upscale brief, with a turbocharged inline-six S500 and a twin-turbo V8 S580, both paired with EQ Boost and all-wheel drive.

The main trade-offs are clear: the design may not appeal to everyone, and the price is high. Even so, the market shows 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is positioned as a flagship sedan with a strong emphasis on refinement, advanced engineering, and high-end execution. Its mild-hybrid setup, smooth automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive point to a powertrain designed for effortless daily use, while the expert notes also emphasize its serene commuting character and responsive driving manners.

The ownership picture is helped by the model’s premium positioning and the sense that Mercedes built it to feel thoroughly sorted. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic competence and more about the cost of maintaining a highly complex luxury sedan.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper paper trail. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the electronics, suspension, and interior condition, since this is a high-complexity luxury sedan where small issues can become expensive. Pay close attention to how well the cabin materials, screens, and driver-assistance features function in real-world use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S500 and S580 are the core trims, and the S500 starts lower while still delivering the flagship look, premium materials, and the same upscale cabin presentation. The S580 adds the V8 powertrain for buyers who want more performance and are willing to pay for it.
• Powertrain: The S500 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with EQ Boost, while the S580 uses a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with the same mild-hybrid support. Both pair with a nine-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive, and the S500 is the more efficient choice.
• Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes adaptive cruise control with route-based speed adaptation, stop-and-go assist, steering assist, emergency stop assist, lane-change assistant, brake assist with cross-traffic and turn-off functions, speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, blind-spot assist with exit warning, lane-keeping assist, parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication. Rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag are available.
• Infotainment: The cabin centers on a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen with the MBUX system, paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. Standard augmented video for navigation is included, and an available augmented reality head-up display adds another layer of guidance.
• Fuel efficiency: The S500 is rated at up to 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.

Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 2 trim levels: S500 4Matic Sedan and S580 4Matic Sedan.

Here's the short version:

• S500 4Matic Sedan: This is the best-value choice if you want the flagship S-Class experience without paying extra for the V8. It still gives you the mild-hybrid inline-six, standard all-wheel drive, and the same luxury-first cabin and technology focus.
• S580 4Matic Sedan: Choose this if you want the stronger twin-turbo V8 and are willing to pay more for extra performance. It suits you best if power matters as much as comfort and prestige.

The safety package is broad across the lineup, with standard driver-assistance features already covering most of the major bases.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and enough price softness to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,148 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.82% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $62,702, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $62,702 sits slightly below last year's $70,313.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently today. For a future seller, it also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car is documented and maintained. Because this is a premium flagship sedan, clean history and strong presentation should matter a lot when it comes time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Mercedes-Benz equips the S-Class with a long list of standard and available driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control with route-based speed adaptation, stop-and-go assist, steering assist with emergency stop assist and lane-change assistant, brake assist with cross-traffic and turn-off functions, speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, blind-spot assist with exit warning, lane-keeping assist, parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication. Magic Vision Control is also standard.

The safety setup is especially strong for a luxury sedan, and the available rear-passenger airbags and rear-seat belt bag add an executive-level layer of protection. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced protection and convenience features are reserved for higher-spec or available equipment rather than being universal.

Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.82% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines flagship luxury with a mild-hybrid inline-six or V8 and standard all-wheel drive.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $58,446, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $62,702 average.
• The redesign brought a more sophisticated infotainment system and new powertrains.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $77,528, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $62,702 average.
• It adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain for buyers wanting electric driving capability.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, luxury, and modern tech, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value path. If you want a newer powertrain direction and can pay more, the 2023 is the upgrade to consider.
