How much does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?

Prices have softened 11.52% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,136 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare prices and equipment.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.

It’s a full-size luxury sedan aimed at executive transportation, and the data backs up that mission with a stylish design, great ride quality, and premium interior materials. You also get two powertrain choices, with a turbocharged inline-six in the S500 and a twin-turbo V8 in the S580, plus all-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic.

The main trade-offs are the potentially polarizing design and the high price tag. Even so, 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The S-Class is positioned as Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sedan, and the available information emphasizes refinement, advanced technology, and a thoroughly premium cabin. Its mild-hybrid powertrains are described as seamless, with the electric motor contributing extra horsepower and torque during acceleration, which supports a polished driving experience.

Mercedes also highlights the car’s executive-level engineering and comfort-focused setup, including a smooth ride and responsive handling. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps soften early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the concept and more about the complexity and expense that can come with a high-end luxury sedan.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a full records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on electronics, suspension behavior, and signs of expensive wear. Pay close attention to condition, since this is a luxury sedan where neglected maintenance can be costly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S500 and S580 both emphasize luxury, but the S-Class’s cabin presentation and feature content make the higher trims and packages more compelling if you want the richest experience.
• Powertrain: You can choose between a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with EQ Boost or a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with EQ Boost, both paired with a nine-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: The standard driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control with route-based speed adaptation, stop-and-go assist, steering assist, emergency stop assist, lane-change assistant, brake assist with cross-traffic and turn-off functions, speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, blind-spot assist with exit warning, lane-keeping assist, parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication.
• Infotainment: The cabin centers on a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen with the MBUX system, paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and standard augmented video for navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The S500 is rated at up to 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway/24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city/25 mpg highway/19 mpg combined.

Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 5 trim levels: S500 Luxury Line, S500 AMG Line, S580 Luxury Line, S580 AMG Line, and S580 Executive Line.

Here's the short version:

• S500 Luxury Line: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core S-Class experience at the lowest starting price. It suits you best if you want the flagship sedan’s comfort and technology without stretching for the more expensive appearance or executive packages.
• S500 AMG Line: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a sportier presentation while keeping the more efficient six-cylinder powertrain. Choose it if you want a more distinctive look without moving up to the V8.
• S580 Luxury Line: This trim is for you if you want the stronger V8 powertrain and the S-Class experience in its most traditional luxury form. It makes sense if performance and smoothness matter more than price.
• S580 AMG Line: This is the step up if you want the V8 plus a more aggressive appearance package. It’s the right pick if you want the most visual presence without going all the way to the top executive trim.
• S580 Executive Line: This is the most upscale choice in the lineup and the one to consider if you want the fullest luxury focus. It’s the trim to target if rear-seat comfort and a more complete flagship feel matter most.

The standard safety and driver-assistance equipment is extensive across the lineup, so you’re mainly choosing between powertrain, appearance, and executive-level luxury content.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to create opportunities.

• Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,136 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.52% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $62,063, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $62,063 sits slightly below last year's $70,147.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the key question is whether the model’s luxury appeal and flagship status can stabilize demand after the recent price drop.

Because the S-Class is a high-end sedan with strong brand recognition, well-kept examples should still attract serious shoppers. But the high original price and expensive ownership profile mean condition and equipment will matter a lot when it’s time to resell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

The S-Class gets loaded with standard and available safety and advanced driver assistance systems, with some executive-level upgrades for the second row.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes active distance assist Distronic adaptive cruise control with route-based speed adaptation, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic function and turn-off function, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication. Magic Vision Control is also standard.

You can also get rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag, along with easy adjust headrests with occupant restraint protection. The safety setup is broad and advanced, though some of the more executive-focused protection features are reserved for the rear seat.

Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.52% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines a mild-hybrid six-cylinder or V8 powertrain with a deeply luxurious cabin and advanced tech.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $58,029, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $62,063 average.
• It brings a major redesign with updated infotainment and new powertrains.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $77,495, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $62,063 average.
• It adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain with impressive electric range.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, luxury, and modern tech, the 2022 is the strongest all-around choice. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2021 is the value play, while the 2023 makes sense only if you specifically want the plug-in hybrid setup and are comfortable paying more.
