CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
overall

Summary
With 172 currently listed for sale near Las Vegas, NV and an average price of $82,770, 29.7% of 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Classes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
97.7% of 2022 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size four-door luxury sedan that aims to define modern executive transportation. Its appeal starts with a 48-volt mild hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain and continues with a choice of a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder gas engine in the S500 or a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in the S580. Both versions use EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive, giving the car a technical and upscale character that matches its flagship mission.
Beyond the hardware, the 2022 S-Class is distinguished by its stylish design, great ride quality, and premium interior materials. Those strengths make it especially attractive to buyers who want a luxury sedan that feels polished and substantial. The tradeoff is that its design may be polarizing, and there is no getting around the high price tag, with the S500 starting at $111,100 and the S580 starting at $117,700. Fuel economy is also mixed depending on the engine, with the S500 rated at up to 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.

The S Class provides safety and comfort for its riders. At first, I decided to purchase the BMW 745e after comparing it with the Audi A8. I decided to give the Mercedes S class a try. After the test drive, I immediately decided to purchase the Mercedes S580. I do not regret my purchase at all. All of the looks of the car look fabulous. The ambient lighting is breathtaking as well as the display screen. The panoramic sunroof is also one of my favorites. I live in a hilly area, but I can’t even tell when going up the hill since the S580 is a powerful vehicle.

It’s been a pinnacle of luxury, however nothing stands out compared to previous models except some businesses including indoor lighting etc. the screen seems odd ;stands out in the middle and does not merge with the rest of the dashboard

The only option I wish it had was the premier stereo system. Otherwise the car was perfect. It was basically a new vehicle. The price I actually paid was great based on the immaculate condition and very low mileage.

This car has a manufacturer recall on its fuel pump mechanism, and it is a hybrid car, so for someone who leaves the car parked in the garage for 2 straight weeks, it may cause the battery to die and may not be suited for my needs/lifestyle

| Average Price a Year Ago | $71,266 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.48% |

Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
It fits the full-size luxury sedan role well if you want a flagship that emphasizes polished execution, premium materials, and advanced tech. The overview points to a 48-volt mild hybrid setup, a turbocharged inline-six in the S500, and a twin-turbo V8 in the S580, while the expert review highlights strong ride quality and a cabin built to feel substantial.
The main trade-offs are the potentially polarizing design and the high price tag. Those are meaningful if you’re cross-shopping other luxury sedans or SUVs and want the most value for your money.
30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The S-Class is positioned as Mercedes-Benz’s flagship, and the overview emphasizes its role as a technological showcase with advanced powertrains and a polished luxury focus. The expert review also describes it as a serene commuter and a responsive weekend car, which supports the idea that it’s engineered for both comfort and everyday usability.
Its mild-hybrid powertrain and nine-speed automatic are presented as seamless and refined, and the expert review notes that the electric assist comes in smoothly when you need extra power. The cost-effectiveness commentary also suggests that buyers who choose the sedan 4Matic should find little to complain about or regret.
For used buyers, the biggest long-term ownership risk is less about the concept and more about the complexity and cost that can come with a flagship luxury sedan.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper report. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the cabin electronics, ride quality, and any signs of expensive wear on a high-end luxury sedan. Pay close attention to condition, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well its premium materials and advanced systems have been maintained.
Key things to evaluate:

- Powertrain: The S500 uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder mild-hybrid gasoline-electric engine, while the S580 uses a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. Both use EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and standard 4Matic AWD.
- Safety package: Standard driver assistance features include active distance assist Distronic with route-based speed adaptation, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic function and turn-off function, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, and Pre-Safe Impulse Side. Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 5 trim levels: S500 4Matic Luxury Line, S500 4Matic AMG Line, S580 4Matic Luxury Line, S580 4Matic AMG Line, S580 4Matic Executive Line.
Here's the short version:
- S500 4Matic Luxury Line: This is the most accessible way into the S-Class, and it gives you the core flagship experience with the turbocharged inline-six, EQ Boost, and standard AWD. It makes the most sense if you want the S-Class nameplate and luxury feel without stretching to the higher-priced variants.
- S500 4Matic AMG Line: This adds a sportier presentation and sits above the Luxury Line, but the underlying powertrain remains the same. Choose it if you want a more aggressive look and are willing to pay more for appearance and equipment.
- S580 4Matic Luxury Line: This is the step up if you want the twin-turbo V8 and the strongest performance in the lineup. It’s the right pick if you value effortless power more than keeping the purchase price down.
- S580 4Matic AMG Line: This combines the V8 with the AMG Line treatment, so you get stronger performance and a more assertive appearance. It suits buyers who want the most dramatic all-around setup short of the top trim.
- S580 4Matic Executive Line: This is the most upscale version mentioned, and it’s the one to consider if rear-seat comfort and a more chauffeur-oriented experience matter most. It’s the most expensive path, so it makes sense only if you’ll use the added luxury.
The safety content also notes available rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag, which are worth considering if you regularly carry passengers in back.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,137 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.48% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $63,177, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $63,800 sits slightly below last year's $71,266.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car is equipped and maintained.
Because this is a flagship luxury sedan, buyers will still expect a strong presentation and a clean history. If you keep the car in excellent shape, you’ll be better positioned to preserve value even in a softer pricing environment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Mercedes-Benz equips it with a long list of standard driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control with route-based speed adaptation, stop-and-go assist, steering assist, emergency stop assist, lane-change assist, brake assist with cross-traffic and turn-off functions, blind-spot assist with exit warning, lane-keeping assist, parking assist with Parktronic, and Pre-Safe systems. It also includes car-to-x communication and Magic Vision Control.
The safety setup is especially comprehensive for a luxury sedan, and the available rear-passenger airbags and rear-seat belt bag add another layer of protection for back-seat occupants. If you’re comparing trims, the main safety takeaway is that the car is already heavily equipped from the start.
Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.48% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It pairs a mild-hybrid powertrain with strong ride quality and premium materials.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $59,183, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $63,800 average.
- It introduces the redesigned flagship with advanced tech and strong performance.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $77,879, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $63,800 average.
- It adds a new plug-in hybrid powertrain for buyers wanting more electric driving range.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and flagship luxury, the 2022 is the strongest starting point. If your priority is spending less, the 2021 is the value play; if you want the newer powertrain direction and can pay more, the 2023 is the upgrade path.
