CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 574 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,260.00, 29.8% of 2022 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
78.6% of 2022 MAZDA3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by blending style, driving enjoyment, and a sense of value that feels unusual among mainstream compact cars. It is also one of the few remaining cars in Mazda’s lineup, alongside the MX-5 Miata, which helps explain why the brand puts so much emphasis on making it feel special. In practice, that character shows up in the car’s attractive design, its fun-to-drive nature, and its strong safety ratings.
For 2022, Mazda adds a Mazda3 2.5 S Carbon Edition with Polymetal Gray paint, black 18-inch alloy wheels, black mirror caps, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system with aluminum speaker grilles. The Mazda3 Turbo models also get a standard wiper de-icer system, and Platinum Quartz Metallic is newly available as a paint color. Those updates reinforce the Mazda3’s upscale feel, and owner feedback echoes that impression by praising the comfortable, luxurious interior, impressive handling, strong turbo performance, and Bose stereo system.
The tradeoffs are familiar ones for the segment. The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is noted for poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and technology that can be unintuitive. Even so, its combination of style, driving enjoyment, and premium touches gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want a compact car that feels a little more special than the usual mainstream choice.

This car is beautiful, so far no problems reliability-wise, to be expected from a tried-and-true NA 4 cyl paired to a traditional automatic transmission (no cvt unlike the current corolla and civic autos!). This car drives great for what it is. Speaking for the FWD model, handling is direct and predictable and has good feedback even with stock tires (215/45r18s on my trim). Even though this car isn’t as powerful as the turbo model, it’s fast enough to still be very enjoyable to drive. At 6’0, I surprisingly fit in the backseat of the hatch even with the front seat all the way back (not super comfortably though) and my head doesn’t touch the ceiling. Would recommend anybody interested to test drive this car.

I love this car because of its simple yet luxurious interior and it’s smooth drive. Also love the 6 speed. Perfect daily driver with room for modifications.

By far the best car in its class for performance, luxury, and technology. The turbo engine combined with already excellent handling takes the already popular Mazda 3 to an elevated level.

I love the comfort of the interior, the seats molds around your body. It has a lot of nice features that I was looking for, sunroof, keyless entry,,heater seats and a great Bose stereo that blows your mind. I wish it came with a bigger spoiler of a different color than the car. My biggest change would be to put a black package on them. They look silly with black wheels and chrome trim, I am adding aftermarket black trim everywhere. The only other thing Is, I wish it looked a little more sporty. I bought the turbo and it has plenty of kick but could have used a little bit of a different design than the regular model. For the 32k price range it was a good value in today’s market if it was a little sportier looking.

How much does the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,216 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,873.64 |
| Year-Round High | $21,925.80 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,923 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.22% |
Prices have softened 3.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 575 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $19,873.64, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable and luxurious interior, impressive handling, and strong turbo performance, and many also like the Bose stereo system. The car’s style and premium feel come through clearly in the overview, which frames it as a compact car that feels more special than the usual mainstream choice.
The trade-offs are familiar: poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and technology that can be unintuitive. Even so, the combination of driving enjoyment, upscale touches, and value-oriented positioning makes it appealing if you want a compact car with more personality than most rivals.
With 26.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is enough market activity to keep shopping selective rather than rushed.
Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a car that feels comfortable, luxurious, and enjoyable to live with over time, and it also highlights strong performance and appreciated features like the Bose stereo system. The expert notes reinforce that sense of dependability by describing the car as calm, cool, and collected, with smooth and supple ride quality and handling that inspires trust.
Mazda also includes Mazda Connected Services for three years of ownership, with remote engine start, car-finder functionality, and automatic emergency notification after a collision. That kind of support can make day-to-day ownership easier.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s technology, fuel economy, and prior maintenance history have been kept in good shape.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda MAZDA3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on interior condition, electronics, and how the car drives at low and highway speeds. Given the model’s reputation for a cramped back seat and unintuitive technology, make sure the cabin layout and controls work for your daily routine.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5 S lineup offers the broadest range of choices, with FWD or AWD, while the 2.5 S Premium hatchback is the only version with a six-speed manual transmission. The Carbon Edition adds Polymetal Gray paint, black 18-inch alloy wheels, black mirror caps, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, while the Turbo models add a more upscale, performance-oriented feel.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter engine makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.5-liter engine produces 186 hp and 186 lb-ft. The turbocharged 2.5-liter raises output to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on 87-octane fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on 93-octane fuel, with AWD standard on Turbo models.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes on the 2.5 S Select trim or higher, while Turbo models add adaptive front headlights and the top trim includes Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses an 8.8-inch static display, with steering wheel controls and voice recognition. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can help offset the system’s quirks, and Mazda Connected Services adds remote functions and emergency notification.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0 sedan returns 31 mpg in combined driving. The 2.5 S range lands between 27 mpg and 30 mpg combined, depending on trim and powertrain. Turbo models return 26 mpg in the hatchback and 27 mpg in the sedan, and the turbo test car averaged 23.1 mpg.
Which 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 5 trim levels: Mazda3 2.0, Mazda3 2.5 S, Mazda3 2.5 S Select, Mazda3 2.5 S Premium, and Mazda3 2.5 Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- Mazda3 2.0: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup and can live with the least powerful engine. It makes sense if your priority is basic Mazda style and efficiency rather than stronger acceleration.
- Mazda3 2.5 S: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it brings the stronger 2.5-liter engine and opens the door to more configurations, including FWD or AWD. If you want the broadest mix of price, performance, and flexibility, start here.
- Mazda3 2.5 S Select: Choose this if you want the added safety equipment, especially blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It is the trim where the car starts to feel more complete for everyday use.
- Mazda3 2.5 S Premium: This is the one to target if you want the manual-transmission hatchback, which is the only version that offers it. It suits you best if driving involvement matters more than convenience.
- Mazda3 2.5 Turbo: Pick this if you want the strongest performance and standard AWD. It is the right choice if you value quick acceleration and a more upscale, confident driving feel.
The safety package starts with the core driver-assistance features and expands at the 2.5 S Select trim and above, so that is the key trim-level cutoff to watch.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mazda MAZDA3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling pressured.
- Deal availability: 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 575 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,873.64, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $21,216 sits slightly below last year's $21,923.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability rather than broad market momentum alone.
The trims and features that feel more premium today may help support demand later, especially if the car remains well kept and properly documented. A clean history and strong presentation matter more when the market is already showing some price softness.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
It earns five-star ratings in every assessment from NHTSA, including rollover resistance, and the IIHS names it a Top Safety Pick+.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert comes on the 2.5 S Select trim or higher, while Turbo models add adaptive front headlights that swivel into turns. At the top of the lineup, Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system add even more capability.
The safety package is a major strength here, and the expert notes say the driver-assist features behave as expected without false alarms or ill-advised actions. That makes the system easier to trust and more likely to stay turned on in daily driving.
Should I buy a 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 26.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a Carbon Edition, a standard wiper de-icer on Turbo models, and a more upscale feel.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,567, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,216 average.
- It emphasizes refined driving enjoyment and a more mature turbo character.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $22,782, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $21,216 average.
- It leans harder into luxury-level comfort and hatchback versatility.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and feature content, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 gives you a lower entry price, while the 2023 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling take on the same formula.
