The seven-seat Land Rover Discovery, technically the fifth generation of its kind within the brand, arrived for the 2017 model year to replace the LR4 and received a major update for 2021. Fresh off of those improvements, there are no changes of note for the 2022 model year.

Two flavors of powertrain motivate the Discovery. The base P300 option includes a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The premium P360 option comprises a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system with 355 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a sophisticated four-wheel drive (4WD) system with Land Rover’s proprietary Terrain Response system.

Available air suspension gives the Discovery a plush and yet controlled ride. Fuel economy numbers are unchanged from last year at 19 mpg city, 22 highway and 21 combined for the P300 and 18, 24 and 21 for the P360. The Discovery will also tow a maximum of 8,200 lbs.

As before, the Discovery comes in S, R-Dynamic S, and R-Dynamic HSE trims. The base S comes with LED exterior lights, a power liftgate, heated and power-folding mirrors, 20-inch wheels, keyless start, 14-way electric front seats, grained leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, an 11.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a 180W sound system with eight speakers.

Uprated leather, 21- and 22-inch wheels, premium LED headlights, keyless access, an electric-folding third row, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a hands-free liftgate, a color-contrasting roof, a panoramic roof, a heated windshield, heated washer jets, a heated steering wheel, four-zone climate control, and an in-cabin filtration system are optional.

Safety-wise, even the base Discovery comes with a 3D-surround camera, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane-keeping assist. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, a head-up display, a digital rearview mirror, and a parking assistant are optional. Oddly, neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has ever evaluated the Discovery.
