Nice smooth ride, plenty of power under the hood. But missing some comfort features comparing it to the Kia K5. Would still recommend the car though.

We got the Limited, the top trim line of the Sonata. We really like it. It is very comfortable, and all the cameras around the outside give wonderful situational awareness in either driving or parking. The backup camera is great in the daytime but doesnt give nearly as clear a view at night. We preferred the shift lever in our last Sonata, but the buttons are OK. The dashboard displays give a LOT of information, and we love the heads display. We looked at offerings of Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, but none seemed to have the features offered by this car.

2022 Hyundai Sonata Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2022 Hyundai Sonata prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2022 Hyundai Sonata cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,094 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,949.88 |
| Year-Round High | $21,838.38 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,836 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.98% |
Prices have softened 7.98% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,172 listings available, which suggests you have room to compare prices and equipment across the market.
If you find a listing below $19,949.88, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — the 4.75/5 user rating and 8/10 expert rating both point to a strong all-around package. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
The Sonata fits you well if you want a midsize sedan with a spacious cabin, strong value, and a broad trim range. The overview also points to a robust warranty and a feature-rich setup, while the expert notes highlight a quiet cabin and a compelling N Line option for drivers who want more personality.
The main trade-offs are a potentially polarizing design and the lack of all-wheel drive. If you want a practical family sedan with a lot of equipment for the money, the Sonata makes a strong case; if styling or traction in poor weather matters most, you may want to compare carefully.
31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sonata’s reliability case is helped by its strong value positioning, broad standard equipment, and the expert view that it delivers exceptional quality and an outstanding warranty. The performance notes also describe the car as competent, quiet, and easy to live with, which supports the idea of a low-stress ownership experience.
Hyundai’s complimentary maintenance coverage adds another ownership perk, which can reduce early service costs. For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about choosing a well-kept example with complete service history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are not the same as problem-free listings. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, electronics, tires, brakes, and signs of uneven wear. If you’re comparing trims, make sure the equipment on the window sticker matches what’s actually on the car.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base SE models come with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a comprehensive safety package, but they miss the larger display and upgraded audio found higher up the range. SEL adds more convenience and driver-assistance features, while Limited brings more luxury and parking aids.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder makes 180 hp and 195 lb-ft. The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 290 hp, and all versions are front-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Hyundai SmartSense-style coverage includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high beams, rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
- Infotainment: Base trims use an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. SEL Plus, Limited, and both N Line trims upgrade to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless device charging, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. The SEL also gets Blue Link connected services.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 32 mpg in the SE to 27 mpg in the N Line. The SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited all return 31 mpg combined, and the test car averaged 30.7 mpg.
Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, N Line, and N Line Night Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE gives you the essentials, but you give up the larger touchscreen, upgraded audio, and the extra driver-assistance features that appear higher in the lineup.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SEL is the best value for many shoppers because it adds meaningful comfort and safety upgrades without jumping all the way to luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most polished mainstream choice, with features like ventilated front seats, a head-up display, surround-view monitor, and rear parking-collision avoidance.
- Off-road trim: The N Line is the performance pick, but its sport suspension and lower fuel economy make it less ideal if you mainly want a calm daily driver.
The SEL trim also gets blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,172 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.98% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,949.88, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $20,094 sits slightly below last year's $21,836.
That price movement suggests the Sonata has become more approachable for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady in the near term. For a future seller, the softer market means you may need to price competitively to stand out. The good news is that a well-equipped, well-kept Sonata still has broad appeal because it offers strong value and a lot of standard equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The Sonata gets five-star ratings for overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance in the individual tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL trim adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
The main caveat is that the IIHS had not rated this model year for crashworthiness in the provided data, so you should lean on the NHTSA results and the standard safety equipment when evaluating it.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong value with a broad trim range and a quiet, well-equipped cabin.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,533, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $20,094 average.
- It emphasizes sporty performance and practicality in a bargain-priced package.
The bottom line: if you want the better-balanced buy, the 2022 is the stronger all-around choice because it gives you more current pricing context, strong safety equipment, and broad trim coverage. If your top priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better price-sensitive path and still delivers a compelling Sonata experience.
