CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe
overall

Summary
With 327 currently listed for sale near Philadelphia, PA and an average price of $22,522.00, 37.9% of 2022 Hyundai Santa Fes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
100.0% of 2022 Santa Fe models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe stands out as a midsize crossover SUV that delivers a lot of value as standard equipment. It is also a strong fit for buyers who want a roomy SUV but do not need a third row, since the third-row seats add weight and reduce cargo space. That combination makes the Santa Fe appealing as a practical, well-equipped family vehicle with a focus on everyday usefulness.
For this model year, the big news is a new plug-in hybrid version, while the standard lineup also gains a new XRT trim level designed to convey an outdoor lifestyle. In practical terms, that trim adds blacked-out exterior details, unique black alloy wheels, additional lower body cladding, fake front and rear skid plates, nearly useless running boards, and roof-rail crossbars that look like basket handles. Hyundai also expands blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist to the Santa Fe SE trim level later in the year. Those strengths are balanced by some clear drawbacks, including an underwhelming base engine, fairly pedestrian performance, and poor fuel economy.

This is very good choice for personal daily commute purposes. Has everything you need. Obviously SantaFe calligraphy has all the features provided by Hyundai, I feel wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is missing.

Extraordinary value with many standard safety features and a luxurious interior. Ill take this poor mans Genesis anyway, saved a lot of money.

This vehicle has a lot of bang for the buck. It hits well above its class IMO. The comfort and ride quality is very good ... The Limited is as good as many luxury class vehicles including Lexus and M/B that cost 10s of thousands more. Lots of tech that does take some time to learn and get used to but helpful and functional, if you are into that. We were sold on it in about 5 minutes during test drive after dearching for a new ride for 6-8 months. We like it.

How much does the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,738 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,736.69 |
| Year-Round High | $23,980.45 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,985 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.37% |
Prices have softened 9.37% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,662 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing prices and trims.
If you find a listing below $21,736.69, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe a good car?
Yes — the 4.85/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.33/10. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise its excellent value, comfortable ride, and roomy interior, and they also like the tech features and advanced safety equipment. The main trade-offs are the underwhelming base engine and the fairly pedestrian performance, with poor fuel economy also standing out.
That makes the Santa Fe a smart fit if you want a practical midsize SUV with a lot of standard equipment and you do not need a third row. With 34.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers emphasizing the Santa Fe’s strong value and comfortable day-to-day use. The expert evaluation also highlights Hyundai’s long warranty coverage and complimentary maintenance, which help reduce ownership friction early on.
The powertrain is described as refined in normal driving and quiet on the highway, which supports the sense that it is easy to live with over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about durability and more about choosing a version that feels underpowered or inefficient for your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not universal. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, tire wear, and signs of hard use, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example. It also helps to compare trim equipment closely so you do not overpay for cosmetic upgrades that do not change the driving experience much.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The XRT adds blacked-out exterior details, unique black alloy wheels, extra lower body cladding, fake skid plates, nearly useless running boards, and roof-rail crossbars, but it does not meaningfully improve capability. It includes the SEL and Convenience Package equipment, yet the base trim still misses some of the expanded driver-assistance content that arrived later in the year.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, and it is adequate for normal commuting but not for quick acceleration or steep grades. Higher trims get a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque.
- Safety package: Hyundai SmartSense includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability. Highway Driving Assist is not available on the XRT trim level.
- Infotainment: The XRT has a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and an 8-inch touchscreen, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and Bluelink connected services with a complimentary three-year subscription. Digital key is included, but it does not work with Apple iPhones.
- Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle averaged 22.3 mpg, and the official EPA fuel economy rating is 24 mpg.
Which 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, XRT, Limited, Calligraphy.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are focused on value first. It is the trim most likely to leave you wanting more equipment, especially if you care about the richer feature set found higher up.
- SEL: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it builds on the SE and adds the equipment that makes the Santa Fe feel more complete. If you want a well-equipped daily driver without paying for the flashiest trim, this is the one to target.
- XRT: Choose this only if you specifically like the outdoor-themed look and want the blacked-out styling, unique wheels, and added body cladding. The content makes clear that the cosmetic changes do not translate into a meaningful capability upgrade.
- Limited: Move here if you want the stronger turbocharged engine and a more upscale experience. This is the better pick if you care more about performance and comfort than about keeping the price down.
- Calligraphy: This is the most premium-feeling version, so it suits you if you want the most upscale Santa Fe experience and are willing to pay for it.
Hyundai SmartSense is standard, but Highway Driving Assist is not available on the XRT trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile deals.
- Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,662 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.37% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,736.69, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?
The current average of $21,738 sits slightly below last year's $23,985.
That price movement suggests the Santa Fe has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you choose a well-equipped, desirable trim and keep the vehicle in good condition, you may be better positioned when it is time to sell. The current market also shows enough inventory to let you shop for a cleaner example rather than settling for the first available listing.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it gets five-star ratings in every National Highway Traffic Safety Administration test except for a four-star rollover resistance score.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai SmartSense bundles forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability. Safe Exit Assist and an ultrasonic rear occupant alert system are also standard, and Bluelink adds emergency assistance and other monitoring tools.
One caveat is that Highway Driving Assist is not available on the XRT trim level. Even so, the tested driver-assistance systems worked cleanly and consistently, which is exactly what you want in a used family SUV.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds the XRT trim and expands key safety features later in the year.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,869, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,738 average.
- It brings a major redesign update with new styling, tech, and safety improvements.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $24,894, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $21,738 average.
- It carries over nearly unchanged with minor updates and slightly more base-engine horsepower.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and equipment, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense only if you want the newer model year and are comfortable paying more for it.
