CarGurus Analysis: 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD

Summary
With 687 currently listed for sale and an average price of $55,227, 30.7% of 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HDs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD 4.25 / 5 stars.
85.3% of 2022 Sierra 3500HD models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD stands out as a heavy-duty truck that blends serious work capability with a surprisingly broad range of configurations and features. It was offered with a regular cab, an extended cab, or a crew cab, along with either a 6’10” short bed or an 8’2” long bed, and buyers could also choose single- or dual-wheel rear axles. Under the hood, it came with either a 6.6-liter V8 rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque or a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 rated at 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. Properly equipped, it could haul as much as 7,442 pounds of cargo and tow up to 35,500 pounds, which makes its core appeal easy to understand: this is a truck built to do genuinely hard work.
Even in its base form, the 2022 Sierra 3500HD included useful everyday equipment such as a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims pushed the truck in different directions, from the SLE’s added convenience features to the SLT’s MultiPro tailgate, trailering assist features, household power outlets, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The AT4 focused on off-road hardware, while the Denali leaned into luxury with premium leather, a native navigation system, a wireless phone charger, an eight-inch touchscreen, a Bose premium audio system, and parking proximity sensors. Safety equipment also included forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and a teen driver mode.
There are tradeoffs, though. The truck’s size can make it unwieldy in parking lots, and the top trims can be prohibitively expensive. Still, for buyers who want a heavy-duty pickup with strong towing and hauling numbers, a wide range of body styles, and enough available comfort and technology to feel more refined than a basic work truck, the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD has a lot to offer.

Lots of features that will help with a fifth wheel. All vehicles seem to be overpriced but this seemed to fall in line with others.

NOT A GOOD BUY FOR THE MONEY! Simply put, the GMC Sierra is overpriced and under equipped. I just sold my 2019 F250 and that was a superior truck in very sense of the word compared to the GMC Sierra 3500HD but that doesnt stop GMC from overpricing this vehicle. Its sad when a work truck costs $85,000 and has sub-standard equipment. When will the truck industry reprice to lower affordable pricing? Its all about value for the dollar spent and ALL truck markets are nuts. Keep your old vehicles and push this market back by voting with your dollars.

Generally — the 4.25/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for a heavy-duty truck. The 2022 Sierra 3500HD stands out as a truck built for serious work, with broad configuration choices and the kind of towing and hauling capability that makes it easy to understand its appeal. It also gives you useful everyday equipment in base form, while higher trims add comfort, convenience, and technology that can make it feel more refined than a basic work truck. 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD reliable?
Owners rate it 4.25/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 Sierra 3500HD’s appeal is rooted in its heavy-duty capability and its broad range of available equipment, which suggests it can serve both work and daily-use needs well. Its size can make it unwieldy in parking lots, and top trims can be prohibitively expensive, so the best ownership experience usually comes from choosing a configuration that matches your actual use case. For used buyers, long-term risk is most likely to come from hard-use history, so condition and maintenance records matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then focus on a thorough inspection of the truck’s condition and signs of heavy-duty use. Pay close attention to wear that could reflect towing, hauling, or frequent jobsite duty, since those factors can affect long-term ownership costs. If possible, make sure the truck’s equipment and configuration match the kind of work you actually plan to do.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right truck.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 685 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.60% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $55,102, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD's resale value?
The current average of $55,163 sits slightly below last year's $59,062.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also mean future resale gains are less likely to come from appreciation alone. For a future seller, the key advantage is that this model still has clear appeal because it serves a specific need: heavy-duty towing and hauling. Trucks with the right configuration, strong condition, and clean history should remain easier to move than examples with obvious wear or mismatched equipment.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.60% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want a heavy-duty truck with strong towing and hauling capability, broad configuration choices, and enough available comfort and tech to work as both a jobsite tool and a more refined hauler, the 2022 is the primary path to consider. If your priority is stretching your budget further, you can also look at nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-priced example rather than chasing a specific model year.
