How much does the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD cost?

Prices have softened 9.10% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,966 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD a good car?

Generally — the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD earns a 4.43/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.

Drivers consistently praise its smooth and powerful ride, its comfort, and its feature-rich feel. The overview also points to a truck that goes beyond towing and hauling, with attention to off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety.

The trade-offs are that it is slightly down on power compared with rivals, its interior is not as nice as competitors’, and top trims get expensive quickly. That makes it a stronger fit if you want a heavy-duty truck that feels versatile for everyday use, not just a maximum-capacity workhorse.

Good and great deals account for 34.0% of listings, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to a truck that feels smooth, powerful, and comfortable, with owners also highlighting its features and overall value. That kind of praise usually lines up with a vehicle people feel good about living with over time.

The expert review also describes the Sierra 2500HD’s powertrains as strong performers, with the diesel-and-automatic combination singled out for its abundant power and smooth shifting. GMC also covers the first scheduled maintenance visit, which is a nice ownership perk.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about day-to-day satisfaction and more about finding a truck that has been well cared for, especially given the cost and complexity of heavy-duty ownership.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. A pre-purchase inspection matters here because heavy-duty trucks can see hard use, and condition can vary a lot depending on how the truck was worked. Focus especially on signs of wear that might point to towing, hauling, or off-road abuse.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Pro trim is aimed at fleet and contractor buyers and skips leather and fancy tech, while the SLE and SLT add more comfort for mainstream use. The AT4 is the off-road-focused choice, and the Denali is the luxury-oriented trim.
• Powertrain: The Sierra 2500HD offers a standard gas V8 and an optional turbodiesel V8, and the diesel pairs with an Allison 10-speed automatic. The diesel setup is described as especially strong, while the gas engine is also a capable performer.
• Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, following distance indicator, hill-descent control, and front and rear park assist. Standard items include HD Surround Vision, a rear-seat reminder system, driver Safety Alert Seat, and Teen Driver. Some features are not standard on every trim, so check the exact equipment list.
• Infotainment: Depending on trim, you get a 7-inch or 8-inch color touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on SLT and above, available on SLE, and not offered on the base Pro trim. A navigation system is standard on Denali and available on SLT and AT4.
• Fuel efficiency: During testing, the truck averaged an indicated 14.4 mpg in combined driving. If you plan to tow or haul regularly, expect fuel costs to climb.

Which 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD trim should I buy?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD is offered in 5 trim levels: Pro, SLE, SLT, AT4, Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the work-focused starting point, and it makes sense if you want maximum capability without paying for luxury or extra tech. It is the least expensive path into the lineup, but it also skips leather and fancy features.
• SLE: This is the first trim that starts to feel more mainstream, with added comfort and more available tech. It is a smart value pick if you want a usable daily truck without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• SLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more complete mix of comfort and technology, including standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you want a well-rounded truck, this is the one to focus on first.
• AT4: This is the choice if you want the off-road-oriented setup and a more rugged personality. It adds the kind of hardware and appearance that suit buyers who want capability beyond pavement.
• Denali: This is the luxury play, with the most premium positioning in the lineup and standard navigation. It makes sense if you want the most upscale Sierra 2500HD experience and are willing to pay for it.

For safety equipment, the truck offers a broad set of driver-assistance features, but availability varies by trim, so check the exact build before you buy.

If you find a listing below $51,252, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD's resale value?

The current average of $51,347 sits slightly below last year's $56,486.

That decline suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice rather than just the badge alone.

Higher-spec trucks can still hold appeal if they’re well equipped and well maintained, but expensive trims may also face more price sensitivity when it’s time to sell. If you buy smart now, you can improve your odds of getting a stronger return later.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD safe?

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD is not crash-tested by either NHTSA or IIHS because of its high gross vehicle weight rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The truck is available with automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic warning, following distance indicator, hill-descent control, and front and rear park assist. Standard equipment includes HD Surround Vision, a rear-seat reminder system, driver Safety Alert Seat, and Teen Driver.

The review also notes that the truck’s size and mass create a mixed safety picture: it can offer protection to occupants in a collision, but it can also pose more risk to smaller vehicles, pedestrians, and others around it. That makes the available camera systems and driver-assist features especially important.

Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.10% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 review emphasizes a truck that balances capability with off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety.

The bottom line: The 2022 Sierra 2500HD makes sense if you want a heavy-duty truck with a broad feature set and you value the mix of capability and everyday usability. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-equipped truck in the cleanest condition rather than chasing the newest badge.
