CarGurus Analysis: 2022 GMC Sierra 1500
overall
Summary
With 9,204 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,694.00, 32.8% of 2022 GMC Sierras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
87.1% of 2022 Sierra 1500 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 stands out as a major update for the light-duty pickup, bringing a bolder exterior design, a more lavish interior, standard high-end technology, and increased utility. It also adds new trims aimed at opposite ends of the market, including the ultra-luxury Denali Ultimate and the off-road-focused AT4X. That combination gives the Sierra a broader personality than before, letting it appeal to buyers who want a premium truck as well as those who want something more capable off pavement.
Behind the styling and new trim names, the Sierra’s appeal still rests on the basics that matter in a full-size pickup. The test-drive data points to a powerful engine, great ride quality, and a spacious cabin as key strengths. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: poor ergonomic design and poor fuel economy are both noted, which means the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 can feel impressive in comfort and capability while still leaving some room for improvement in day-to-day usability and efficiency.

The only gripe or complaint I have is that GM should consider consumers who are looking for less chrome trim. In the future I’d like to see the GM trucks exhaust tips redesigned and offered in black from the factory.

Yes — the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The owner feedback repeatedly points to a smooth ride, a luxurious interior, and strong features, with many shoppers also praising the powertrains and fuel efficiency. The truck’s update adds a more upscale cabin and more advanced technology, which fits its premium-truck positioning. At the same time, the expert notes call out poor ergonomic design and poor fuel economy, so you should expect some compromises in everyday usability and efficiency.
The Sierra’s broader appeal is that it can serve as both a premium truck and a more capable off-pavement option, depending on how you configure it. Good and great deals make up 29.4% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback emphasizes that the truck feels dependable, with repeated praise for its smooth ride, strong powertrains, and overall trouble-free appeal. The expert notes also support that impression by describing the diesel setup as lively and the truck’s core capability as a strength. If you want a used full-size pickup you can count on, the Sierra’s reputation in this model year points in the right direction.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about living with a truck that can be expensive to fuel and not especially friendly in daily use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 1500?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. A pre-purchase inspection matters here because the Sierra’s strengths are tied closely to trim, equipment, and condition. Pay extra attention to how the cabin, controls, and technology feel in real use, since the truck’s day-to-day livability can vary a lot by configuration.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from Pro to Denali Ultimate, and the base trims are much more straightforward than the upscale versions. The higher trims add more premium materials, more distinctive styling, and more luxury-focused equipment, while the AT4X and Denali Ultimate sit at the top of the range.
- Powertrain: You can choose from a turbocharged four-cylinder, a turbo-diesel inline-six, a 5.3-liter V8, or a 6.2-liter V8. The diesel stands out for towing strength and efficiency, while the higher-output V8 is standard on the top off-road and luxury trims.
- Safety package: GMC Pro Safety includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is standard only on Denali Ultimate, and trailering-focused features include up to 14 camera views, GCW Alert, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, and updated adaptive cruise control.
- Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 13.4-inch touchscreen with Google built-in. Wireless device charging is standard, and three years of complimentary service is included for Sierra AT4 and Denali trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The AT4X is rated at 13 city, 17 highway, and 14 combined mpg.
Which 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate.
Here's the short version:
- Pro: This is the most straightforward entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Sierra’s core capability without paying for premium extras. It is the trim to consider if your priority is value over luxury.
- SLE: This is the first step up if you want a more polished everyday truck without jumping too far in price. It should suit you if you want a better balance of equipment and cost.
- Elevation: This trim adds a more distinctive look and a stronger visual presence, making it a good fit if style matters to you as much as utility.
- SLT: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it moves you closer to the Sierra’s upscale personality without going all the way to the luxury end. It is the trim to target if you want a more premium feel and broader equipment.
- AT4: This is the right pick if you want the off-road-oriented character without stepping into the most expensive specialty version. It suits you if you want rugged styling and capability with a premium cabin.
- Denali: This is the traditional luxury choice, with a more upscale look and feel than the mainstream trims. It makes sense if you want comfort and prestige to be central to your truck.
- AT4X: This is the more serious off-road trim, with premium leather, unique interior details, and hardware aimed at rougher terrain. It is the one to choose if off-pavement capability is a priority.
- Denali Ultimate: This is the top luxury trim and the one to buy if you want the most upscale Sierra experience. It also gets Super Cruise, making it the most advanced choice in the lineup.
GMC Pro Safety is standard, while Super Cruise is limited to Denali Ultimate.

If you find a listing below $42,578.08, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?
The current average of $42,558 sits slightly below last year's $46,795.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on trim, condition, and equipment rather than just model-year freshness. Higher-demand versions with strong features and broad appeal should hold up better than plain configurations.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?
The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 received mostly Good IIHS ratings, but it also earned a Marginal grade in the front-passenger small overlap test and a Poor grade for headlights. NHTSA rated 2WD models with four-star crashworthiness ratings, while 4WD variants have not yet been rated.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
GMC Pro Safety is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, a following distance indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic headlights. Super Cruise is a standout hands-free system, but it is standard only on Denali Ultimate. Trailering-focused safety tech also includes up to 14 camera views, GCW Alert, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, and updated adaptive cruise control.
The main caveat is the Sierra’s weak headlight result, which is a meaningful shortcoming if you drive often at night.
Should I buy a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.05% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 brings a major redesign with more upscale tech, a richer cabin, and new top-end trims.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $35,389, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $42,558 average.
- It offers familiar capability with flexible configurations and unique GMC styling.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $45,706, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $42,558 average.
- It pushes luxury further with the Denali Ultimate and nearly every major option.
The bottom line: If you want the biggest step forward in refinement and technology, the 2022 is the smart target. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want the most luxurious Sierra experience and are willing to pay more, the 2023 is the one to compare closely.
