CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Ford Ranger

Summary
With 149 currently listed for sale and an average price of $30,900, 37.6% of 2022 Ford Ranger listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Ford Ranger 4 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Ranger sits in the fourth generation of the modern Ranger, and it stands out as a practical midsize pickup that blends strong capability with relatively simple hardware. It uses a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder making 270 horsepower, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and it can be had with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Ford also gave it useful truck credentials, including the highest payload capacity of any midsize pickup truck at the time and a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds when properly equipped. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a work-ready truck that can still handle everyday driving.
The 2022 Ranger also benefits from a few features that make it feel more modern than its straightforward appearance suggests. Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 safety suite was available, along with adaptive cruise control, and the cabin could be equipped with an eight-inch screen running Sync 3. At the same time, the truck’s basic interior and dated infotainment setup show its age, and the generation’s reliability record is not spotless, with the 2019 debut singled out for transmission, electrical, and paint quality complaints. Even so, the Ranger’s combination of capability, available safety tech, and relatively good fuel economy for a gas-powered midsize truck helps explain its appeal.

Engine is meh. Has to be driven above 3000 RPM to get any performance out of it. Previous owner had modified the truck and there were things we would have had to remove, over sized tires rubbed the fender wells at full lock, bed rack and such. $40,000 for a 3 year old Ranger...no one is going to think thats a good value. Its a compact truck and it feels like it. Were coming from an F150 and its night and day difference.

Is the 2022 Ford Ranger a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Ford Ranger earns a 4/5 user rating, which points to a strong overall fit for shoppers who want a practical midsize pickup. The overview describes it as a work-ready truck with strong capability, useful truck credentials, and relatively good fuel economy for a gas-powered midsize pickup, while also noting that its basic interior and dated infotainment setup show its age. That makes it a better match if you value function, towing, and everyday usefulness more than cabin polish. 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Ford Ranger reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview points to a straightforward truck with relatively simple hardware, which can be appealing if you want something less complicated to live with. It also notes that the generation’s reliability record is not spotless, with early-model complaints tied to transmission, electrical, and paint quality. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is worth taking seriously, especially if you’re comparing trucks with cleaner service histories.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Ranger?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then focus your inspection on signs of prior damage, uneven wear, or poor repairs. Pay close attention to overall condition, since the truck’s age and usage can vary widely across listings. If possible, favor examples with clear maintenance records and a clean mechanical feel on a test drive.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Ranger?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,101 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.32% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,002, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $28,002 sits slightly below last year's $31,225.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For future sellers, the softer pricing means condition, mileage, and documentation matter even more when it comes time to list. A well-kept truck should still hold appeal because shoppers continue to value the Ranger’s capability and practical use case.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.32% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,126, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,002 average.
- It adds a more off-road-focused Tremor setup for buyers who want tougher trail capability.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around value play, the 2022 is the better primary target because it combines a lower current market price with solid deal availability and a good satisfaction signal. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the better secondary path, especially if you want to spend less and can live with its older-market pricing and feature set.
