CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Ford Maverick
overall

Summary
With 1,370 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,657, 30.5% of 2022 Ford Mavericks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Ford Maverick 4.65 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
85.5% of 2022 Maverick models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Maverick stands out as Ford’s more approachable pickup, and it does so by being the smallest Ford truck in over a decade. It uses car-like unibody construction for greater refinement, which helps explain its appeal to buyers who want truck utility without the bulk of a larger pickup. Ford also kept the formula simple, offering the Maverick in just three trim levels—XL, XLT, and Lariat—with a single bed length and cab configuration.
Efficiency is another major part of the Maverick’s identity. Ford emphasizes fuel economy with an available hybrid powertrain, and the standard hybrid powertrain is one of the model’s clear strengths. The truck’s great ride quality and excellent value for money further support its case, especially for shoppers looking for a practical, compact vehicle that still feels useful for everyday tasks.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Maverick’s older infotainment system is a notable drawback, and the limited options on lower trim models may leave some buyers wanting more standard equipment. Even so, the 2022 Ford Maverick’s combination of compact size, refinement, efficiency, and value makes it distinctive in Ford’s lineup and appealing to buyers who want a smaller, simpler pickup.

I absolutely love this vehicle- I bought it as it is a hybrid small pick up truck. The only thing I wish is that it had cruise control. I understand the XLT models do have it, my XL does not. This is the first Ford I have owned in 30+ years, the competitors do not have any models similar. No small chevy, dodge pickups on the market....

How much does the 2022 Ford Maverick cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,625 |
| Year-Round Low | $23,541 |
| Year-Round High | $25,854 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,851 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.61% |
Prices have softened 8.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,362 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2022 Ford Maverick a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.65/5, and the expert rating is 8.17/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise its compact size, fuel efficiency, and value for money. They also like its practicality and the way it works well for urban use and everyday tasks. The main trade-offs are the limited options on lower trims and the older infotainment system.
For you, that means the Maverick makes the most sense if you want a smaller pickup that feels easy to live with, efficient, and useful without moving up to a larger truck. Good and great deals account for 30.6% of listings, so there’s still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Ford Maverick reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as efficient, practical, and a vehicle they’re happy to keep using for daily life and work-like tasks. The feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience for buyers who value utility and fuel savings. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by emphasizing the Maverick’s refinement, value, and easy-to-live-with character.
Ford’s warranty coverage also helps reduce early ownership risk, especially if you’re buying used and want some buffer against unexpected repair costs. For long-term ownership, the biggest risk is choosing a poorly equipped or heavily marked-up example that doesn’t match your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Maverick?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a close inspection of the cabin, infotainment operation, and any equipment that matters to you on lower trims. If you want the hybrid, make sure the truck’s condition and usage history line up with your expectations for efficiency-focused ownership.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base XL is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment. Lower trims can leave you wanting more standard features, so pay close attention to what’s included before you buy.
- Powertrain: You get a standard hybrid powertrain with a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine, a single electric motor, and a CVT, plus an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 hp and an eight-speed automatic. The hybrid is smoother and more refined, while the turbo-four adds stronger acceleration and more towing capability.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane centering, and evasive steering assist are optional.
- Infotainment: The Maverick uses the older Sync 3 system with an 8-inch touchscreen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. Wireless smartphone integration is not included.
- Fuel efficiency: Ford advertises 40 mpg city for the hybrid, and the 2.0-liter EcoBoost is expected to return 26 mpg combined with FWD or 25 mpg combined with AWD.
Which 2022 Ford Maverick trim should I buy?
The 2022 Ford Maverick is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the value play if you want the Maverick’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. It still gives you the standard hybrid powertrain, the 8-inch touchscreen, and the basic Ford Co-Pilot360 safety suite, but it’s also the trim most likely to feel sparse if you want more comfort or convenience features.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more equipment without pushing you into the top-end price range. It’s also where you can start layering in more comfort-focused options, making it a smarter balance of price and livability.
- Lariat: Choose this if you want the most upscale Maverick experience and are willing to pay for it. It’s the trim that best suits buyers who care more about comfort and available luxury touches than keeping the truck as affordable as possible.
Safety-package gaps remain important to note: adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane centering, and evasive steering assist are optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Maverick?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,362 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,541, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Maverick's resale value?
The current average of $23,625 sits slightly below last year's $25,851.
That price movement suggests the Maverick has already moved off its earlier peak, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale value may depend more on condition, trim, and equipment than on broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples with desirable features should remain easier to move than stripped or heavily used trucks.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Ford Maverick safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features under the Ford Co-Pilot360 banner include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane centering, and evasive steering assist are optional extras.
Because crash-test ratings aren’t available yet, you should lean more heavily on the standard safety equipment and the availability of optional driver-assistance features when comparing used examples.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Maverick or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 emphasizes simplicity, refinement, and efficiency with a standard hybrid powertrain and compact size.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $26,606, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $23,625 average.
- The Tremor package adds more off-road personality.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2022 is the stronger buy because it combines lower pricing, solid inventory, and the Maverick’s core efficiency-first appeal. If you’re willing to spend more for added personality and a newer model year, the 2023 is the better secondary path.
