The 2022 BMW X4 is an athletic spin on the compact luxury SUV. It has dynamic handling, an upscale interior, and the latest technology, all wrapped in a head-turning fastback package that BMW calls the “sport-activity coupe.” The X4 was introduced as a 2015 model, with the current generation arriving as a 2019 model. For 2022, the X4 has been updated with fresh, angular styling and some new technology as well.

The available trims for the BMW X4 are the xDrive30i and the M40i. Stepping into the X4, eyes will instantly be drawn to the large 10.25-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The X4 includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s available with wireless connectivity for these systems, as well as wireless device charging.

The X4 comes standard with SensaTec upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, M Sport suspension, and a panoramic sunroof. Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The xDrive30i is available with an M Sport package that gives it some of the racy exterior touches of the high-grade X3 M, which is covered in a separate review. This includes more aggressive bodywork and 19-inch Midnight Grey alloy wheels.

The xDrive30i is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The M40i’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six makes 382 hp and 364 lb-ft of torque. For 2022, the M40i also gets a mild-hybrid system that can boost power for short periods of time and can recapture energy from braking. Power with both engines is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission to xDrive all-wheel drive (AWD).

The 2022 BMW X4 starts at $52,795 for the xDrive30i. The M40i starts at $62,370. The 2022 X4 M is expected to arrive in dealerships in fall of 2021.
