Used 2022 BMW M5 for Sale near Massachusetts

Is the 2022 BMW M5 a good car?

Generally — the 4/5 user rating and 9/10 expert rating point to a car that lands well with shoppers who want a high-performance sedan that feels sharp and engaging rather than purely brute-force. The model’s standout strengths are its stylish design, fun-to-drive character, and strong handling, and the 2022 update centers on the M5 CS, which adds carbon-fiber-laden, track-ready performance as standard. The tradeoffs are familiar for this kind of car: poor fuel economy and limited cargo space, plus no manual transmission. The model scores 10/10 across Look and feel and Performance. With 29.6% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 BMW M5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2022 BMW M5 is described as a relatively new generation with no major reported problem areas, and its performance hardware is presented as robust rather than fragile when properly cared for. The expert notes also emphasize that the car is built around controlled, purposeful performance rather than excess for its own sake, which supports the idea that it can be a dependable high-performance choice if it has been maintained well. The M5 CS also benefits from a lighter setup and carbon-ceramic brakes, but long-term ownership risk is still higher than in a mainstream sedan because this is a complex, high-output BMW.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW M5?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.7% — always verify the vehicle history report. You should still prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a performance sedan where wear, modifications, and maintenance history matter more than mileage alone. Focus on overall condition, signs of track use, and whether the car has been cared for consistently.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The M5 CS is the standout version here, with carbon-fiber-heavy exterior and interior treatment, four-seat configuration, M carbon racing seats, and a more focused cabin than the standard M5. The base M5 and M5 Competition are more conventional in layout and materials, so the CS is the one to inspect most carefully if you want the most special equipment.
• Powertrain: The lineup uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission and rear-wheel-biased M xDrive all-wheel drive. Output ranges from 600 horsepower in the standard M5 to 627 horsepower in the M5 CS, and the CS is the quickest version.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, city collision mitigation, rear collision preparation, automatic high beams, and speed-limit information. The available Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keep assist with collision avoidance, evasion aid, front cross-traffic alert, emergency stop assistant, and Extended Traffic Jam Assist. The M5 CS drops some convenience-oriented safety equipment, including adaptive cruise control and the 360-degree surround-view camera.
• Infotainment: You get 12.3-inch digital displays, Live Cockpit Professional with iDrive 7, a head-up display, cloud-based navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air updates, wireless charging, and a WiFi hotspot. That’s a strong standard tech suite for a used performance sedan.
• Fuel efficiency: The M5 is rated at 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 17 combined mpg. The M5 CS returned 17.3 mpg in mixed driving, and 23.3 mpg on the highway in testing.

Which 2022 BMW M5 trim should I buy?

The 2022 BMW M5 is offered in 3 trim levels: M5, M5 Competition, M5 CS.

Here's the short version:

• M5: This is the entry point, but it still brings the twin-turbo V8, xDrive all-wheel drive, the eight-speed automatic, and the full standard tech and safety suite. It makes sense if you want the core M5 experience without paying for the more specialized versions.
• M5 Competition: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more power than the base M5 and keeps the same overall formula while sharpening the performance edge. If you want the sweet spot between price and capability, this is the one to target.
• M5 CS: This is the most extreme and most expensive version, with 627 horsepower, lighter weight, carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon-fiber body and cabin details, and a four-seat layout. Buy this if you want the most focused and collectible M5, not if you’re shopping for value.

The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the M5 CS gives up some convenience-oriented features, so make sure that tradeoff fits how you plan to use the car.

Is the 2022 BMW M5 safe?

The 2022 BMW M5 has not been crash tested by NHTSA, and IIHS ratings are not specific to this model year. It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, city collision mitigation, rear collision preparation, automatic high beams, and speed-limit information. The available Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keep assist with collision avoidance, evasion aid, front cross-traffic alert, emergency stop assistant, and Extended Traffic Jam Assist. The Executive Package adds Parking Assistance Plus, active park distance control, drive recorder, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

The M5 CS trims back some of that convenience-focused safety hardware, including adaptive cruise control and the surround-view camera, so you should factor that into your decision if driver assistance matters to you.

Should I buy a 2022 BMW M5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 update makes the M5 CS the headline change, bringing carbon-fiber-laden, track-ready performance as standard.

The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive version of this generation, the 2022 is the one to target because the M5 CS gives the lineup its most focused personality and strongest performance. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby year may still deliver the core M5 formula with less of the CS premium, but the 2022 stands out for shoppers who want the special edition experience.
