The 8 Series cars are a crown jewel in BMW’s expansive coupe, sedan, and convertible lineup. Even with their elevated stature, the 2022 model year brings only modest updates, with the M Sport package now standard for 840i models, which also get a price cut. BMW offers the 8 Series as a coupe, a convertible, or as a sedan, which it calls a “Gran Coupe.” Two powertrains are on tap for the 2022 model year. The base 840i uses a turbocharged inline-six that produces 335 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. Upgrading to the M850i brings a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 rated at 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the M850i gets standard all-wheel drive (AWD), a feature that can be added to 840i models, which come standard with rear-wheel drive (RWD). The souped-up M8 gets a twin-turbocharged V8 just like its M850i counterpart, but here it’s tooled up to produces 617 hp. BMW says that powertrain will be capable of propelling the M8 from zero to 60 mph in three seconds flat, and notes that the car can go on to a top speed of 156 mph. BMW lavishes the 8 Series’ interior with standard features such as heated front seats and armrests, customizable ambient interior lighting, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 10.3-inch infotainment display, and leather upholstery. BMW offers a few avenues for interacting with the infotainment system, which include the in-dash touchscreen, a rotary controller on the center console, or gesture control. Wireless charging and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto capabilities are also included. The 2022 8 Series gets a handful of advanced driver assist systems, but BMW offers most in added-cost options packages. The cars come standard with automatic high beams, adaptive brake lights, dynamic cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and forward-collision warning. BMW offers driver-assistance packages that add features such as blind-spot monitoring, a camera/radar-based partly-automated driving assistance system, traffic jam assistant, an onboard dashcam system, parking sensors, and a surround-view monitor camera system. Some can be optioned in for as little as $100. The 2022 BMW 840i Coupe starts at $85,995, which includes a $995 destination charge. Pricing for the 8 Series Convertible starts at $95,395.
