CarGurus Analysis: 2022 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 1,441 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,799.00, 33.5% of 2022 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars.
85.1% of 2022 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW 5 Series sits in the seventh-generation G30 family, and that matters because this version is defined less by raw sport-sedan sharpness than by a polished blend of comfort, technology, and everyday luxury. BMW had already moved the 5 Series toward a more relaxed character by this point, and the 2022 model reflects that shift while still keeping enough performance to feel like a proper BMW. It also benefits from the generation’s strong safety equipment and generally better reliability record than the earlier F10 5 Series, which helps make it a more reassuring used buy.
For 2022, the 5 Series lineup included the 530i, 540i, and 530e, along with the M550i xDrive. The 530i used a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the 540i used a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The 530e plug-in hybrid was also part of the lineup, and the generation’s 2021 facelift brought a tweaked front end and a larger infotainment touchscreen. Inside, the cabin remained centered on BMW’s iDrive system and a large screen setup, but reviewers noted that the interface could be complex to learn.
What makes the 2022 5 Series appealing is that it offers a lot of the right luxury-sedan ingredients without abandoning the brand’s performance identity. Standard safety equipment was generous, including blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams. At the same time, some of the best driver-assistance features remained optional, and reviewers also felt the steering and suspension in the 530i, 540d, and 540i did not deliver the same engaging feel as older 5 Series models. Even so, for buyers who want a refined midsize sedan with strong engines, useful technology, and a more mature personality, the 2022 BMW 5 Series is a compelling choice.

This is an awesome car and well equipped. Unfortunately it is missing a very important feature to me. I have had a M550 with the Bowers & Wilkins stereo and I have had a M550 with the Harmon Kardon, there is no comparison.

How much does the 2022 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $34,078 |
| Year-Round Low | $34,079.40 |
| Year-Round High | $36,546.73 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $36,433 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.46% |
Prices have softened 6.46% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,539 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $34,079.40, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the 2022 BMW 5 Series backs that up with a polished mix of comfort, technology, and everyday luxury. The overview also frames it as a midsize sedan that keeps enough performance to feel like a proper BMW while leaning more toward refinement than raw sport-sedan sharpness. That makes it a good fit if you want a premium daily driver with strong engines and a mature personality. With 30.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 model benefits from the generation’s stronger safety equipment and a generally better reliability record than the earlier F10 5 Series. That combination makes it a more reassuring used buy if you want a luxury sedan without stepping into the most uncertain part of the ownership curve. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is paying for a neglected example, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 5 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on every candidate and confirm that the car’s records match its advertised condition. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage examples or cars with optional equipment that can be expensive to sort out. Focus on overall condition, maintenance consistency, and whether the technology and driver-assistance features work as expected.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 5 Series?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,539 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.46% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $34,079.40, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $34,078 sits slightly below last year's $36,433.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on how well you preserve the car’s condition and documentation. Well-kept examples should hold up better than neglected ones, especially in a segment where buyers compare equipment, mileage, and history closely.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.46% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $28,963, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $34,078 average.
- It adds a refresh with a bigger touchscreen and mild-hybrid tech.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the better pick if you want the newer-year pricing context, strong inventory, and a well-rounded luxury sedan with broad appeal. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2021 is the smarter value play, especially if you find one in excellent condition with the right equipment.
