CarGurus Analysis: 2022 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 194 currently listed for sale near Miami, FL and an average price of $27,949, 40.7% of 2022 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still leans on BMW’s performance heritage, even as it has become more comfort-oriented than the brand’s older sports-sedan reputation. It offers a strong mix of technology and driving appeal, and BMW equips it with plenty of active-safety features. The cabin is centered around the curved display, which combines a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen under one panel, giving the interior a distinctly modern feel.
For 2022, the 5 Series carried over the 2021 facelift with its tweaked front end and larger infotainment touchscreen. The 540i also had a mild-hybrid system for improved efficiency and better stop/start performance, while the plug-in hybrid had already received a power bump to 288 ponies. BMW’s parking assistance feature was dropped in the final year of this design, and reviewers noted that the steering and suspension in the 530i, 540d, and 540i did not feel as engaging as older versions and that the car felt heavy. Even so, it remained more fun than many staid competitors and offered a better reliability record than the earlier F10 5 Series.

This is an awesome car and well equipped. Unfortunately it is missing a very important feature to me. I have had a M550 with the Bowers & Wilkins stereo and I have had a M550 with the Harmon Kardon, there is no comparison.

How much does the 2022 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $33,336 |
| Year-Round Low | $33,336 |
| Year-Round High | $36,530 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $36,519 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.72% |
Prices have softened 8.72% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,538 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2022 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year.
The 2022 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that still leans on BMW’s performance heritage, even as it has become more comfort-oriented than the brand’s older sports-sedan reputation.
For you, that means the 2022 model makes sense if you want a luxury sedan with a modern cabin and a balanced mix of comfort and driving appeal. 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2022 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
BMW’s own positioning for this model year points to a better reliability record than the earlier F10 5 Series, which is encouraging if you’re shopping used. The 2022 model also carries over the 2021 facelift and its updated tech, while the 540i’s mild-hybrid system and the plug-in hybrid’s power bump reflect a mature, well-developed lineup.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained properly, since luxury sedans can become expensive if deferred maintenance stacks up.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 5 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on every candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can check the condition of the electronics, suspension, and other high-value systems that matter most on a luxury sedan. Focus on overall wear, maintenance records, and whether the car’s condition matches the asking price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 5 Series?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,538 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.72% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,336, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $33,336 sits slightly below last year's $36,519.
That decline suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can also affect what you recover later if you sell. If prices stay softer, future resale values may remain under pressure compared with stronger years. Even so, a well-kept example should still appeal to shoppers looking for a premium sedan with strong equipment and a modern cabin.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.72% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $28,758, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $33,336 average.
- It offers sportier-than-average driving dynamics with strong ride quality and impressive technology.
The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year pricing context, a strong inventory pool, and a modernized cabin, the 2022 is the better primary choice. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2021 is the smarter value play and still brings a compelling mix of performance, comfort, and tech.
