CarGurus Analysis: 2022 BMW 4 Series
overall

Summary
With 829 currently listed for sale and an average price of $36,140.00, 35.5% of 2022 BMW 4 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 BMW 4 Series 4.89 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
84.7% of 2022 BMW 4 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe stands out because its appeal is rooted in driving dynamics. It is based on the 4 Series coupe, but it takes the form of a five-door hatchback that makes rear-seat access easier and adds some of the cargo utility you would expect from an SUV. That combination gives it a practical edge without abandoning the sporty character that defines the model.
BMW offers the 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe in 430i and M440i specification, but there is still no M4 performance version of the Gran Coupe. The car’s strengths include being fun to drive, offering plenty of cargo space, and packing impressive technology. At the same time, its styling may be polarizing, the back seat is cramped, and it is not especially strong on value for money.
Owners also tend to praise the 2022 BMW 4 Series for its performance, styling, and comfort. Many highlight the handling and engine power, while some note concerns about rapid depreciation compared with rival brands.

Bought CPO. Its my first BMW, but compares reasonably well to Mercedes C-Class and Audi A5 Sportback. Of the three, I prefer the Audi interior. It feels large and roomy inside and it drives nicely and has plenty of pick up if you floor it. The User interactions with the Infotainment system are reasonably intuitive. Some customizations require dealer intervention, but thats a minor niggle.

How much does the 2022 BMW 4 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $36,216 |
| Year-Round Low | $35,719.19 |
| Year-Round High | $38,277.85 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $38,271 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.37% |
Prices have softened 5.37% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 837 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare. If you find a listing below $35,719.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 BMW 4 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2022 BMW 4 Series earns a 4.89/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its performance, styling, and comfort, and they especially like the handling and engine power. The user feedback also points to strong interior quality and a driving feel that stands out in the class.
The trade-offs are clear: the styling can be polarizing, the back seat is cramped, and value for money is not a strong suit. That matters most if you want a practical daily driver rather than a sporty premium hatchback with a personality.
For you, the 2022 4 Series makes the most sense if you want a five-door luxury car that blends rear-seat access and cargo utility with a sporty character. With 29.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 BMW 4 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.89/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on performance, comfort, and the kind of driving experience people want to keep coming back to. That same feedback also suggests the car can feel like a long-term keeper if you value its mix of style and driving enjoyment.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the car as composed, assured, and easy to trust on the road. BMW also includes complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is not outright durability so much as the cost of living with a premium car that may depreciate quickly and can be expensive to keep in top shape.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 4 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper paper trail. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been optioned heavily or driven hard. Focus on condition details that matter on a premium sport-luxury car, including interior wear, cosmetic imperfections, and signs that the car has been used aggressively.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 430i can be had with Sport or M Sport styling, while the M440i adds an M Performance design with Shadowline trim treatment. The 430i test vehicle also showed that some desirable equipment can be missing even on a well-equipped example, so you should check carefully for the features you want.
- Powertrain: The 430i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission. The power delivery is responsive, and the transmission includes paddle shifters plus Sport and Manual modes.
- Safety package: Active Driving Assistant is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. The more advanced Driving Assistance Professional Package is available only on the M440i.
- Infotainment: Standard Live Cockpit Professional pairs a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 10.25-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with over-the-air updates for the navigation system.
- Fuel efficiency: The 430i returned 25.3 mpg on the evaluation loop, versus an official estimate of 28 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2022 BMW 4 Series trim should I buy?
The 2022 BMW 4 Series is offered in 2 trim levels: 430i and M440i.
Here's the short version:
- 430i: This is the trim to target if you want the best value in the lineup. It delivers the core BMW strengths here — lively handling, strong tech, and a responsive turbo four-cylinder — without forcing you into the higher-priced M440i. It is also the better fit if you care more about the car’s everyday balance than about chasing the most expensive equipment.
- M440i: Choose this if you want the stronger performance-oriented setup and the extra equipment that comes with moving up the range. It is the better pick if you want more of the premium features that are not available on the 430i, and if you are willing to pay more for them.
The standard safety package is solid on both trims, but the more advanced driver-assistance package is reserved for the M440i.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 4 Series?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 837 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.37% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 84.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $35,719.19, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 BMW 4 Series's resale value?
The current average of $36,216 sits slightly below last year's $38,271.
That price movement suggests the market has already absorbed some depreciation, which can be helpful if you are buying now and planning to sell later. A softer current price can also mean less immediate downside than when a model is still in its steepest early depreciation phase.
At the same time, the owner feedback shows that buyers still value the car’s performance and comfort, which helps support demand. If you keep the car in strong condition and choose a desirable trim, you should have a better shot at holding value than a neglected example.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.89/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 BMW 4 Series safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Active Driving Assistant is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. BMW also includes driver monitoring, post-collision braking, front and rear parking sensors, and connected emergency services.
The lane-keeping assistance system is especially effective, and the expert evaluation says it reacts swiftly and decisively when you drift out of your lane. If you want more advanced assistance features, the Driving Assistance Professional Package is available only on the M440i and adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assistance, lane-change assistance, emergency stop assistance, evasive steering assistance, front cross-traffic alert, and Traffic Jam Assistant.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW 4 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.89/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 returns with a five-door Gran Coupe body that improves rear-seat access and cargo utility.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,796, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $36,216 average.
- It offers a coupe-and-convertible lineup with a more traditional two-door focus.
The bottom line: If you want the more practical Gran Coupe body style and a market that has already softened, the 2022 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly path, especially if you do not need the extra hatchback utility.
