CarGurus Analysis: 2022 BMW 3 Series
overall

Summary
With 1,723 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,557.00, 34.5% of 2022 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 BMW 3 Series 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
84.5% of 2022 BMW 3 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW 3 Series stands out as a luxury sports sedan that still leans into the formula that made the nameplate famous. It is described as the original and best luxury sports sedan, and its appeal comes from a blend of fun-to-drive character, multiple powertrain options, and easy-to-use technology. BMW also gives every 3 Series the Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation with navigation this year, which helps keep the cabin feeling current without changing the car’s basic personality.
At the same time, the 2022 model is presented as largely familiar, with BMW making only minor changes to the standard and optional equipment lists. That conservative approach may appeal to buyers who want a proven sedan rather than a dramatic reinvention, but it also means the car does not address every weakness. A manual transmission is not available, advanced safety features are not standard, and the stereo is lacking. Even so, the 2022 BMW 3 Series remains distinctive because it combines everyday usability with the kind of driving enjoyment that continues to define the segment.

The features on this series BMW are phenomenal. Looks like it will hug the ground in those tight turns. The body style is amazing on this car. Perfect for your everyday car or just your Sunday outings. Only thing it's missing Is me behind the wheel. I wouldn't really compare it to another series. It's in a class of it's own. Awesome car!!

How much does the 2022 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,422 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,436.34 |
| Year-Round High | $30,895.72 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $30,903 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.03% |
Prices have softened 8.03% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,823 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare against. If you find a listing below $28,436.34, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its sporty performance, great handling, and stylish design, and many also like the fuel efficiency and quick acceleration. That lines up with the car’s everyday appeal as a luxury sports sedan that still prioritizes driving enjoyment and easy-to-use technology. The trade-offs are that the manual transmission is not available and the stereo is lacking, while the car’s conservative update strategy means it stays familiar rather than dramatically improved. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a proven premium sedan with broad appeal rather than a major redesign. Good and great deals account for 34.4% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The user feedback also points to a car that feels sporty, efficient, and enjoyable to live with over time, while emphasizing the kind of driving character that keeps owners engaged. BMW’s performance tuning and the car’s composed road manners reinforce that sense of confidence and durability in daily use. BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership friction. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that maintenance costs and reported oil leak concerns can make upkeep more expensive than you might expect.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because even a strong accident-free share does not guarantee the specific car you’re considering has a clean past. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or a long option list. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment on the car matches what you expect for the trim and packages.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, and M3. The 330i and 330e are the entry points, while the M340i adds a more powerful six-cylinder setup and the M3 is the high-performance version. Base equipment is relatively modest, so you should pay close attention to whether the car has the optional packages you want.
- Powertrain: The 330i and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the 330e adds plug-in hybrid electric vehicle technology with 23 miles of estimated electric driving range. The M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, 382 horsepower, and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Active Guard includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert require the optional Driving Assistance package, while the Driving Assistance Professional package adds lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, evasive-steering assist, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Emergency Stop Assistant.
- Infotainment: Every 2022 3 Series gets a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, BMW Remote Services, and the Intelligent Personal Assistant. Connected Package Pro is standard, and the system also includes satellite radio and a 10-speaker HiFi sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 24.9 mpg on the evaluation route and is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 4 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, and M3.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the most straightforward way into the lineup if you want the core 3 Series experience with the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the standard tech suite. It makes the most sense if you want the badge, the driving feel, and the digital cockpit without paying for extra performance.
- 330e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and the estimated 23 miles of electric driving range before it switches to gas-electric hybrid operation. It suits you best if short daily trips and efficiency matter more than outright performance.
- M340i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the turbocharged inline-six, mild-hybrid assistance, stronger brakes, and the sharper chassis tuning that make the 3 Series feel special. If you want the sweet spot between luxury, speed, and everyday usability, this is the one to target.
- M3: Pick this only if you want the high-performance version and are willing to pay for it. It sits at the top of the range and is the choice for buyers who want the most aggressive interpretation of the 3 Series formula.
For safety equipment, remember that advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you should look for cars equipped with the relevant optional packages.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,823 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 84.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,436.34, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $28,422 sits slightly below last year's $30,903.
That price movement suggests the market has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range, you may reduce the amount of value left to lose. Strong demand for well-kept examples should also help support pricing, especially for cars with desirable equipment and clean history. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?
It earns Top Safety Pick recognition from the IIHS, and the 3 Series also earns five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, including for rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety tech package includes Active Guard, which brings forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. If you want blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, you need the optional Driving Assistance package. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, evasive-steering assist, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Emergency Stop Assistant. One caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should verify which package a used car has before you buy.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the standard Live Cockpit Professional digital cockpit and navigation across the lineup.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,482, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,422 average.
- It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid to the lineup.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $34,593, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,422 average.
- It brings a mid-cycle refresh with sleeker styling and updated technology.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and the classic 3 Series driving experience, the 2022 is the smart default. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want newer styling and updates, the 2023 is worth the premium.
