Used 2021 Volvo XC90 for Sale nearBakersfield, CA

How much does the 2021 Volvo XC90 cost?

Prices have softened 16.39% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,050 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Volvo XC90 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

It stands out as Volvo’s de facto flagship, with a safety-first identity wrapped in a stylish luxury-SUV design. The XC90’s strengths include its premium interior materials, refined road manners, and strong safety reputation, while the trade-offs include a cramped third row and sluggish performance.

For shoppers who want a refined, safety-focused three-row SUV with a distinctive Scandinavian character, it makes a strong case. The market also shows 39.4% of listings as good or great deals, which adds some shopping flexibility.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC90’s appeal is built around Volvo’s long-running emphasis on safety, and the 2021 model continues that theme with a well-equipped, premium-feeling cabin and a reputation for thoughtful engineering. Its powertrains and cabin tech are designed to feel upscale and modern, even if the vehicle is no longer the newest in its class.

The performance side is more mixed: the four-cylinder-based powertrains can feel less flexible than larger engines in rival SUVs, and the plug-in hybrid setup can require some compromise between efficiency and power. For used buyers, that means the biggest ownership risk is not basic durability so much as whether the vehicle’s performance and packaging fit your expectations.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC90?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still prioritize a history report and a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a three-row luxury SUV where wear can vary a lot by family use. Focus on cabin condition, seat wear, and how well the tech and driver-assistance features operate, since those are central to the XC90 experience. If you’re considering a plug-in hybrid, make sure the charging setup and battery-related systems have been maintained properly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Momentum is the base model and doesn’t get the extra visual flair of the R-Design or Inscription, while the Inscription adds the flashiest exterior treatment and more upscale presentation. The R-Design leans sportier with a gloss-black grille surround and standard 20-inch wheels, while the Momentum uses 19-inch wheels.
• Powertrain: The T5 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, the T6 adds supercharging for 316 hp and 295 lb-ft, and the T8 plug-in hybrid combines electric assist for 400 hp and 472 lb-ft. The T5 is front-wheel drive by default, with all-wheel drive optional; the T6 and T8 come standard with all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Pilot Assist is the standout driver aid, combining adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering. Standard equipment also includes lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking.
• Infotainment: You get a 9-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, and a built-in WiFi hotspot. Two front USB-A ports and two rear USB-C ports are standard, and a head-up display is available.
• Fuel efficiency: The base FWD T5 is rated at 25 mpg combined, the AWD T5 at 23 mpg combined, and the AWD T6 at 22 mpg combined. The T8 plug-in hybrid is rated at 27 mpg combined in hybrid mode and offers up to 18 miles of all-electric range.

Which 2021 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the value play if you want the XC90 experience at the lowest entry point. It gives you the core design, safety, and tech package without the extra visual upgrades of the pricier trims.
• R-Design: Choose this if you want a sportier look, including the gloss-black grille surround and standard 20-inch wheels. It’s the middle ground for shoppers who want more style without going all the way to the top trim.
• Inscription: This is the most upscale choice, with the flashiest exterior treatment and the most premium presentation. It makes the most sense if you want the XC90 to feel as luxurious as possible.

Pilot Assist and the broader safety suite are major strengths across the lineup, so even the lower trims stay well equipped on the safety front.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC90?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 39.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,050 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.39% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 81.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $26,418, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $26,418 sits slightly below last year's $31,598.

That drop suggests the XC90 has already moved through a meaningful part of its depreciation curve, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. A lower entry cost today can make it easier to preserve value later, especially if you choose a well-kept example with strong equipment and clean history. The model’s premium image and safety reputation should continue to support demand among used buyers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2021 XC90 received the highest “Top Safety Pick+” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and all 2021 XC90 models earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with five-star ratings in frontal and side crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover testing.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes lane-keep assist, a driver-attention monitor, traffic-sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering. The non-hybrid models earned top “Good” scores in all IIHS crash tests, while headlights and LATCH child-seat anchors were rated “Acceptable.” The plug-in hybrid’s IIHS rating is not updated in the same way as the non-hybrid models, so the strongest crash-test result applies to the non-hybrid versions.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 39.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 16.39% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds Care Key and a 112 mph limiter, reinforcing Volvo’s safety-first approach.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $22,915, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $26,418 average.
• It’s a polished family hauler with premium feel and strong safety credentials.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $29,309, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $26,418 average.
• It adds an eco-minded personality with available plug-in hybrid and leather-free features.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and modern luxury, the 2021 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 can save you money while keeping much of the same appeal. If you want a newer-feeling take with a more sustainability-focused angle, the 2022 is worth the extra spend.
