Summary
With 113 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,162, 33.6% of 2021 Volkswagen Arteons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon stands out as Volkswagen’s flagship sedan, and it leans into that role with a refined look and a strong emphasis on technology. For 2021, it arrives with upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance, giving it a more polished and upscale feel than its mainstream badge might suggest. It is also described as a showcase for the brand’s capabilities and technologies, which helps explain why it wears such a distinctive halo.
What makes the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon appealing is the way it can be equipped to near-luxury levels while still keeping pricing below $50,000. Its stylish design and premium interior materials are clear strengths, and it also offers plenty of cargo space. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: it is called out for poor value for money and poor fuel economy, so buyers are getting style, space, and sophistication more than efficiency or bargain pricing.

All the driver assistance features you would expect for a never vehicle are in this car minus a front facing camera. The digital dash is a great feature and the auto folding headlights should be on every car. The 268 hp engine is quiet and quick. Apparently subsequent years have a 300 hp engine but mine is fine, no complaints. Trunk is roomy as its a hatchback.

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,163 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,998.03 |
| Year-Round High | $23,913.20 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,864 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.32% |
Prices have softened 11.32% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 106 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $20,998.03, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
It fits well if you want a sedan that feels more upscale than its mainstream badge suggests, with polished styling, premium interior materials, connectivity, and plenty of cargo space. The expert review also points to a car that can be loaded with available features to approach near-luxury territory while staying below $50,000.
The trade-offs are that it is described as poor value for money and as having poor fuel economy, so you should weigh the equipment and refinement against running costs and resale expectations. Even so, 31.1% of listings are marked as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Arteon is presented as a refined, well-equipped flagship sedan with a premium-feeling cabin, strong technology, and a comfort-focused driving character. Its powertrain is described as up to the task of moving the car, and the chassis tuning emphasizes serene highway cruising and everyday adaptability.
It also includes language pointing to solid dependability in use: the car is described as cruising beautifully and absorbing bumps and cracks without much noise or harshness, which is the kind of behavior that usually matters most over time. Volkswagen also includes a standard automatic post-collision braking system, which can help reduce further damage after an impact.
If you buy used, the main long-term ownership risk is that its premium ambitions may not fully protect you from higher running costs and weaker value retention.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status is not the same as a clean mechanical record. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body condition, electronics, tires, brakes, and signs of uneven wear, especially if the car has been driven hard or modified. Since the Arteon is positioned as a more premium sedan, you’ll want to make sure the condition matches the asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment. If you want the best balance of features and value, the mid-level trim is the one to focus on.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic and either FWD or AWD. The setup is tuned more for comfort and adaptability than for hard-edged acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-view camera. Higher trims add adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, park distance control, high beam control, travel assist, emergency assist, and dynamic road-sign display.
- Infotainment: You get a standard 10-inch digital cockpit and an 8-inch center touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, Bluetooth, HD radio, SiriusXM, and Car-Net connected services. The premium audio upgrade appears on the top trim.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA fuel economy figures are 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway/25 mpg combined for FWD and 20 mpg city/31 mpg highway/24 mpg combined for AWD.
Which 2021 Volkswagen Arteon trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Arteon’s core design, cabin quality, digital cockpit, wireless smartphone integration, and standard safety tech without pushing the price up. It makes sense if you want the Arteon experience at the lowest cost.
- SEL R-Line: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more equipment and can be had with either FWD or AWD. It also unlocks more of the available driver-assistance content, making it the sweet spot if you want a richer feature set without going all the way to the top.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the most fully equipped version, with AWD only, upgraded audio, ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, a massaging driver’s seat, and additional parking tech. Choose this if you want the most luxury-like Arteon.
The safety package expands on the higher trims, so if driver assistance matters to you, the upper two trims are the ones to prioritize.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 106 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.32% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,998.03, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon's resale value?
The current average of $21,163 sits slightly below last year's $23,864.
That price drop suggests the market has softened, which can be good for you as a buyer but less favorable if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at today’s lower prices, you may have less downside risk than someone who bought when values were higher.
For a future seller, the key issue is that the Arteon’s premium positioning does not automatically guarantee strong retained value. Its appeal is tied to style, equipment, and rarity, but the market has already shown some pressure on pricing.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon safe?
The 2021 Arteon was recently awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips it with a broad safety suite that includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a rear-view camera, eight airbags, anti-lock braking, tire pressure monitoring, electronic stability control, automatic post-collision braking, and an intelligent crash response system. A reactive hood is also included to help reduce pedestrian injury in certain impacts.
Higher trims add adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, park distance control, high beam control, travel assist, emergency assist, and dynamic road-sign display, while the top trim adds park assist, rear park distance control, and an overhead view camera. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced driver-assistance features are not standard on the base trim.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Arteon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.32% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It serves as Volkswagen’s flagship sedan with upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It adds newfound performance capability and a more engaging driving character.
The bottom line: If you want the better-known value play, the 2021 is the stronger buy because prices have eased and there are still decent deal opportunities. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model-year update with a more engaging character, the 2022 is worth a look; otherwise, the 2021 gives you the core Arteon experience with a softer entry price.
