CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Volkswagen Arteon
overall

Summary
With 109 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,238.00, 36.7% of 2021 Volkswagen Arteons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
77.1% of 2021 Arteon models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon stands out as Volkswagen’s flagship sedan, and it leans into that role with a polished mix of refinement, connectivity, safety, and technology. It also arrives with upgraded styling and interior finishes, giving it a more upscale feel than its mainstream badge might suggest. For buyers who want a sedan that looks distinctive and feels well equipped, the Arteon’s appeal is easy to understand.
Its strengths are especially clear in the details: stylish design, premium interior materials, and plenty of cargo space. The car can also be loaded up with available features to take it to near-luxury levels, while still keeping pricing below $50,000. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though, since the Arteon is described as poor value for money and as having poor fuel economy.

All the driver assistance features you would expect for a never vehicle are in this car minus a front facing camera. The digital dash is a great feature and the auto folding headlights should be on every car. The 268 hp engine is quiet and quick. Apparently subsequent years have a 300 hp engine but mine is fine, no complaints. Trunk is roomy as its a hatchback.

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,284 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,058.45 |
| Year-Round High | $23,916.86 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,802 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.58% |
Prices have softened 10.58% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 110 listings available, you have a modest amount of inventory to compare before you commit.
If you find a listing below $21,058.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
It fits you well if you want a sedan that feels more upscale than its mainstream badge suggests, with polished styling, premium interior materials, strong connectivity, and plenty of cargo space. The expert notes also point to a car that can be loaded with available features to approach near-luxury territory while staying below $50,000.
The main trade-offs are value and efficiency: the expert notes call out poor value for money and poor fuel economy. Even so, if you want a distinctive, well-equipped sedan rather than a conventional family car, the Arteon’s mix of refinement and practicality is compelling.
29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Arteon is presented as a polished flagship sedan with upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance, which supports the case for a well-rounded ownership experience. Its turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is described as up to the task of moving the car, and the chassis tuning emphasizes comfort and serenity on the highway.
The expert notes also point to a broad set of standard and available safety systems, plus standard adaptive damping and a fully independent suspension, both of which can help the car feel composed over time. The cost-effectiveness notes also mention that the lineup is simple, with only accessories and premium paint as options.
For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is that a premium-feeling Volkswagen can still carry ownership costs and resale concerns that matter more as mileage climbs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?
At 74.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or safety-system repairs. Focus on overall condition, panel alignment, interior wear, and whether the technology and driver-assistance features operate as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is FWD only, while the SEL R-Line adds FWD or AWD and the SEL Premium R-Line comes only with AWD. The higher trims also add more comfort and convenience equipment, including ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, and a massaging driver’s seat on the top trim.
- Powertrain: You get one turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. FWD and AWD are both offered, and the expert notes say the car is tuned more for comfort and adaptability than hard acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-view camera. Available systems on SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, park distance control, high beam control, travel assist, emergency assist, and dynamic road-sign display.
- Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 10-inch Digital Cockpit display and an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Volkswagen Car-Net, navigation, Bluetooth, HD radio, SiriusXM, and hotspot capability are also included.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway/25 mpg combined for FWD and 20 mpg city/31 mpg highway/24 mpg combined for AWD.
Which 2021 Volkswagen Arteon trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Arteon’s core appeal at the lowest price. You still get the turbocharged engine, standard digital cockpit, wireless smartphone integration, and the full safety baseline, so it covers the essentials well if you want the cleanest path into the model.
- SEL R-Line: This is the best-value trim if you want the strongest balance of equipment and price. It adds more upscale positioning, available AWD, and access to the broader driver-assistance suite, making it the trim most buyers should compare first.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the one to choose if you want the most comfort and convenience features. It adds the richest equipment mix, including ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, a massaging driver’s seat, and additional parking assistance features.
Safety-package note: the broader driver-assistance suite is standard on SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line, while the base SE gets the core safety features but not the full set of advanced systems.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep scarcity.
- Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 110 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,058.45, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon's resale value?
The current average of $21,284 sits slightly below last year's $23,802.
That price movement suggests the market has already softened, which can be a mixed signal for future resale. If you buy now, you may benefit from a lower entry price, but you should also expect the model’s value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim.
The Arteon’s premium-feeling equipment and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable features. Still, the current trend shows that buyers are being selective, so a clean history and strong presentation will matter when you eventually sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon safe?
The 2021 Arteon was recently awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen equips the Arteon with a broad safety suite that includes eight airbags, anti-lock braking, tire pressure monitoring, electronic stability control, automatic post-collision braking, an intelligent crash response system, and a reactive hood. Standard active safety also includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-view camera.

Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Arteon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model adds upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It adds more expressive design, stronger performance, and surprising interior room.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and inventory is available. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer version with a more engaging character and added visual appeal, the 2022 is the better path.
