CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Toyota Prius
overall

Summary
With 364 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,526, 31.3% of 2021 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota Prius 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.17 / 10.
70.3% of 2021 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Prius stands out as a car built around efficiency and everyday practicality. It is presented as one of the best ways to get from Point A to Point B when driving is mainly about function, and its appeal centers on reliability, efficiency, safety, and economy. That makes it especially attractive to buyers who want a low-hassle, low-expense, and low-discomfort way to handle routine transportation.
For 2021, Toyota also offered a 2020 Edition, limited to 2,020 examples to mark the 20th anniversary of the first Prius sold in the U.S. market. That version adds blacked-out trim, black 17-inch wheels, a body-color rear spoiler, and Supersonic Red or new Wind Chill paint colors. Toyota also made Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard across the board, and Android Auto became standard alongside Apple CarPlay, except for the unique infotainment system in the Prius Limited.
The Prius’s strengths are reinforced by its fuel efficiency, quiet cabin, and excellent value for money. Its main drawbacks are a potentially polarizing design and sluggish performance, so it remains most compelling for shoppers who prioritize efficiency and comfort over driving excitement.

This is the 5th Toyota Prius Ive owned. The features of my 2021 Prius XLE are what I expect from Toyota. The car borders on being a luxury/hybrid sedan. The ride is so much better than previous year Priuses, along with no wind or road noise. The quality is up to par with other Toyotas Ive owned. This car lacks nothing. There is nothing in this cars class that it can be compared with. The Honda Insight doesnt come close, the Hyundai Ioniq is a nice hybrid, but lacks the fine details and refinement of the Prius. I might compare it to a Camry S.E. hybrid, but again, the Camry is a different type of car. The fuel mileage isnt as good as what the Prius delivers. Also, the Camry is not a hatchback...too bad.

I have had Toyotas for years. I like their reliability, low repair cost and gas mileage. This is our third Prius!

Zippier than I expected. Very quiet and smooth riding. Simple features as far as seats go. This model felt smaller, like it wraps around me. But overall a nice car for the price with excellent fuel mileage.

How much does the 2021 Toyota Prius cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,484 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,732 |
| Year-Round High | $21,686 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,816 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +3.21% |
Prices are up 3.21% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 360 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for shoppers to compare.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
The data points to a car built around efficiency and everyday practicality, with appeal centered on reliability, safety, economy, and low-hassle commuting. The trade-offs are clear too: the design is potentially polarizing, and performance is sluggish rather than engaging.
For you, that means the Prius makes the most sense if your priority is efficient, comfortable routine transportation rather than driving excitement. 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Prius is described as a cost-effective form of transportation with a well-earned reputation for reliability, and its appeal is reinforced by impressive fuel economy and complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 25,000 miles. The expert evaluation also frames it as an affordable, dependable, efficient, safe, and practical car for everyday use.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the core formula and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Prius?
At 70% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a collision or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or warning lights. Focus on overall condition and maintenance records, since this model’s value proposition depends heavily on dependable, low-cost ownership.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes L Eco, LE, XLE, 2020 Edition, and Limited. The base setup is functional, but the cabin and exterior styling are unusual, and the 2020 Edition adds blacked-out trim, black 17-inch wheels, a body-color rear spoiler, and special paint choices.
- Powertrain: The Prius uses an Atkinson-cycle 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine with a 53-kilowatt electric motor and an e-CVT. The L Eco is the efficiency leader at 56 mpg combined, front-drive models are rated at 52 mpg combined, and AWD-e versions return 49 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high beams, and road-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is included on LE and higher trims.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 7-inch touchscreen and includes Bluetooth, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. The Limited gets an 11.6-inch portrait-style touchscreen, navigation, a 10-speaker JBL system, and natural voice recognition, but it does not get Android Auto on that unique system.
- Fuel efficiency: The L Eco averages 56 mpg combined, other front-drive versions earn 52 mpg combined, AWD-e models get 49 mpg combined, and the test vehicle averaged 47.5 mpg on the testing loop.
Which 2021 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Prius is offered in 5 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, 2020 Edition, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L Eco: This is the efficiency-first choice, and it is the best-value trim if your priority is maximizing mpg above all else. It delivers the strongest combined fuel economy in the lineup and keeps the Prius focused on low running costs.
- LE: This is the trim to target if you want the best balance of price and equipment. It adds the broader safety and convenience package while still keeping the Prius firmly in value territory.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more upscale daily driver without jumping all the way to the top trim. It builds on the LE formula with more comfort and convenience content.
- 2020 Edition: This is the limited-run appearance model for shoppers who want the commemorative styling touches and exclusivity rather than the most practical value play.
- Limited: Pick this if you want the most tech-heavy Prius, including the larger portrait-style screen, JBL audio, navigation, and voice recognition. Just note that its unique infotainment setup does not get Android Auto.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every trim, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert starts on LE and higher.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Prius?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 360 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.21% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 70.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,732, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $21,484 sits slightly above last year's $20,816.
That year-over-year increase suggests the Prius is holding value reasonably well, which is consistent with steady demand for efficient, practical transportation. For a future seller, that means a clean, well-maintained example should remain attractive to budget-conscious shoppers who care about fuel savings and reliability.
Because the model’s appeal is tied to low ownership costs and everyday usefulness, condition and maintenance history will matter a lot when you go to resell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Prius safe?
The 2021 Toyota Prius earns favorable marks from the IIHS.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every version and includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, lane-centering assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and road-sign recognition. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is included on LE and higher trims.
One caveat is that the lane-keeping and lane-centering systems can make the steering feel more artificial, and the lane-departure warning can become intrusive.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.21% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota made Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard across the board, and Android Auto became standard alongside Apple CarPlay.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,622, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $21,484 average.
- It remains a standard-bearer among hybrids with strong versatility and available all-wheel drive.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the better primary pick if you want the latest safety and connectivity setup in a proven efficiency-focused package. If you are price-sensitive, the 2020 can still make sense, but the 2021’s broader standard equipment and strong market demand make it the cleaner buy for most shoppers.
