CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Toyota Avalon
overall

Summary
With 179 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,940, 34.6% of 2021 Toyota Avalon listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Toyota Avalon 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
70.9% of 2021 Toyota Avalon listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Toyota Avalon stands out as one of the few large sedans still on the market, which gives it a clear identity in a segment that has been shrinking fast. It also occupies an unusual spot in Toyota’s lineup by bridging the price gap between the Toyota Camry and the Lexus ES. That positioning makes it appealing to buyers who want a roomy, comfortable sedan with a more upscale feel than a mainstream midsize car, even if the Avalon’s overall mission is less compelling in an SUV-heavy market.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is comfortable and spacious, and the TRD trim adds extra performance and style. Those qualities help the Avalon feel like a traditional big sedan done well, with the kind of cabin room and relaxed character many shoppers still want. At the same time, the 2021 Avalon is not without drawbacks. Its base engine is described as underwhelming, all-wheel drive is only available with the I-4 engine, and its technology is outdated.

Christian Wardlaw gave the Avalon a hatchet job due to his business interests with other car models. This is as ineffective a review as can be had. What he wrote was criminal. As an owner of four Avalons, I am a giant in knowledge compared to this dweeb! The Avalon may have been the best sedan ever produced. Its combination of excellent performance, allure and driving endurance makes it one of a kind. You never hear of an unhappy Avalon owner. The same can't be said for SUVs. These are hardly luxurious and are a poor sight on the roads. I have never seen the technology of an SUV match the workmanship of the Avalon. Do you know why the Avalon was discontinued? Lexus sales were suffering. These overpriced car offered a higher profit margin. Hence, the desire of number profit for Lexus sales executed the Avalon, one of the world's most reliable cars.

Enough luxury and sporty feel to enjoy its smooth riding experience . Pedal box feel isnt your squishy brake pedal feel , firm enough to feel proper brake pressure. Comfort is amazing ,no ride fatigue after being 4+ hours on the road . Spacious interior, good sound system. Fantastic appearance package . Fantastic vehicle overall.

Good value for the money, loaded with options. A smooth ride. My second Avalon, and this one is better than my last one. Too bad that 2022 is the last year for Toyota’s flagship vehicle.

Owners consistently praise its luxurious features, smooth ride, spacious interior, comfortable seating, and strong performance, especially from the TRD version. In use, it fits buyers who want a roomy, comfortable sedan with a more upscale feel than a mainstream midsize car, even though its mission is less compelling in an SUV-heavy market. The main trade-offs are an underwhelming base engine and outdated technology, and the market still shows 35.0% good or great deals.
Is the 2021 Toyota Avalon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the car’s comfort and overall satisfaction over time. Expert testing reinforces that impression by describing the Avalon as stable, secure, and predictable on the road, with a quiet cabin and composed ride quality. Toyota also includes free scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s age, equipment, and value proposition still fit your needs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota Avalon?
At 71.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, glass, and panel alignment. Pay close attention to condition and equipment on higher-trim examples, since the Avalon’s appeal depends heavily on comfort, safety, and technology features. If you’re comparing listings, make sure the car’s equipment matches the trim level you think you’re buying.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The XLE and Limited are the comfort-focused choices, while the XSE Nightshade, XSE Hybrid, Touring, and TRD are the sport- and performance-tuned variants. The base-trim feature gap matters because the safety package is not the most comprehensive collection of advanced driver aids Toyota offers, and lower trims also suffer from poorer headlight performance.
- Powertrain: The Avalon offers a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with AWD, a standard 301-hp 3.5-liter V6, and a 215-hp hybrid. The four-cylinder is the least exciting option, while the V6 and hybrid better match the car’s relaxed, upscale character.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense-P is standard and includes full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard, while the optional Advanced Safety Package adds a surround-view camera system, parking assist sonar, and rear automatic braking.
- Infotainment: Every Avalon gets a 9-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, SiriusXM, and Toyota connected services. The upgraded system adds dynamic navigation and voice recognition with over-the-air updates during the free subscription period, plus a 14-speaker JBL premium sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The AWD four-cylinder test car returned an official EPA rating of 28 mpg in combined driving, and the hybrid is rated at up to 44 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2021 Toyota Avalon trim should I buy?
The 2021 Toyota Avalon is offered in 5 trim levels: XLE, XSE Nightshade, XSE Hybrid, Touring, and TRD.
Here's the short version:
- XLE: This is the comfort-first choice and the trim that makes the most sense if you want the Avalon’s roomy, upscale character without chasing sportier styling. It also matters because AWD is limited to non-hybrid XLE and Limited versions, so this is the trim to consider if traction is a priority.
- XSE Nightshade: Choose this if you want the blacked-out appearance treatment and a more aggressive look without moving all the way to the performance-focused TRD.
- XSE Hybrid: This is the efficiency-oriented option for shoppers who want the Avalon’s upscale cabin with hybrid fuel economy.
- Touring: This trim leans sportier than the comfort-focused models and suits buyers who want a more dynamic feel.
- TRD: This is the best fit if you want the Avalon’s strongest personality, since the TRD trim adds extra performance and style and is the version most clearly aimed at enthusiastic drivers.
Toyota Safety Sense-P is standard across the lineup, and blind-spot monitoring plus rear cross-traffic alert are standard as well.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota Avalon?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 177 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,560, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Toyota Avalon's resale value?
The current average of $27,893 sits slightly above last year's $27,624.
That small increase suggests the Avalon has held its value reasonably well in the near term, even as the large-sedan segment continues to shrink. For a future seller, that kind of stability can help support pricing if your car is clean, well maintained, and equipped with desirable features. The market also appears steady rather than volatile, which usually makes resale planning easier.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Toyota Avalon safe?
The 2021 Toyota Avalon earns top scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and an overall five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense-P is standard and includes full-speed-range adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also standard. The optional Advanced Safety Package adds a surround-view camera system, parking assist sonar, and rear automatic braking.
A key caveat is that lower trim levels have poor headlight performance, which keeps the Avalon from qualifying for a Top Safety Pick award.
Should I buy a 2021 Toyota Avalon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Expert testing highlights its roomy cabin, comfortable ride, and TRD trim’s extra performance and style.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $27,545, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $27,893 average.
- It offers a flagship feel, strong safety ratings, and a spacious cabin.
The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year market with stable pricing and a decent share of good deals, the 2021 is the better starting point. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up some of the newer-year pricing context, the 2020 is the value-minded alternative.
