CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport
overall

Summary
With 606 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,205, 27.4% of 2017 Nissan Rogue Sports for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
60.1% of 2017 Rogue Sport models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport stands out most for its sporty styling, which is the main thing it has going for it. Despite the name, it does not deliver on performance promises, and the available test-drive commentary says it lacks both the guts and dynamism expected of something called “Sport.”
That makes the 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport an appealing choice mainly for buyers who want the look of a small crossover SUV with a more athletic appearance than its driving character suggests. Its biggest limitation is also its defining contradiction: there is nothing especially sporty about it beyond the styling.

The features are pretty nice. Like the heated seat and steering wheel options. Love the remote start! I would compare it to Toyota Rav 4 or Ford Escape or Honda CR-V of the same year model. I wish it had a moonroof/sunroof but I'm not disappointed since there are roof rack side rails and I could see myself using the roof for cargo on trips. So I'm happy to accept that.

Really enjoying this vehicle. It is perfect for my needs. I dont need a race car just a reliable commuter thats is good in all driving conditions. It is comfortable and the ride is very good. The features for the price are well worth it. Will have this for a long time to come.

The market also shows 28.2% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The expert commentary suggests the Rogue Sport’s appeal comes more from its styling, interior presentation, and available technology than from any hard-driving character. Its performance notes also point to a modest powertrain and a CVT that can feel strained when you ask for quick acceleration, so you should expect a vehicle that is more about everyday commuting than spirited driving.
The cost-effectiveness notes also emphasize that you can get a lot of modern equipment for the money, which helps the ownership experience feel more complete. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the same underpowered, CVT-based setup that limits enjoyment can also make the vehicle feel less satisfying if you expect more than basic daily transportation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport?
At 60% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because this model’s appeal is tied heavily to appearance and equipment, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is much easier to justify than one with questionable history or visible wear.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S is the most stripped-down version, while the SV adds more equipment and the SL brings the most upscale look and feel, including the machined-face 19-inch wheels that help the vehicle appear more expensive. If you want the best value, the SV is the trim that balances equipment and price most effectively.
- Powertrain: The Rogue Sport uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with a CVT. It makes 141 horsepower and 147 lb-ft of torque, and the performance notes say it feels fine around town but strained when you need quick passing or merging power.
- Safety package: The SV Premium Package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Automatic emergency braking and automatic high-beam LED headlights are restricted to the SL Premium Package, and the Platinum Package adds adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-departure prevention.
- Infotainment: NissanConnect uses a 7-inch touchscreen and includes NissanConnect Mobile Apps, NissanConnect Services, navigation, text-messaging support, and Siri Eyes Free compatibility. Wireless smartphone projection is not included.
- Fuel efficiency: The performance notes say the AWD test vehicle was rated at 27 mpg in combined driving, and it returned 24.4 mpg on the test loop.
Which 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport trim should I buy?
The 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, SL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Rogue Sport, and it makes sense if you mainly want the styling and basic crossover utility without paying for extra equipment. It is the trim to consider if you want to keep the purchase price down and can live without the more advanced convenience and safety features.
- SV: This is the best-value trim because it adds a more complete mix of technology and safety equipment without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It is the trim that most clearly balances price, features, and everyday usefulness.
- SL: This is the trim to choose if you want the most upscale presentation and the most available equipment. It is the one that gets the larger 19-inch wheels and unlocks the highest-level safety and driver-assistance content when paired with the right packages.
For safety equipment, note that automatic emergency braking and automatic high-beam LED headlights are limited to the SL Premium Package, while the Platinum Package adds the most advanced driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 602 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,048, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport's resale value?
The current average of $12,251 sits slightly below last year's $12,710.
That decline suggests the market has softened, which can work against you if you're planning to sell soon. On the other hand, it can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle if you're shopping used now.
For a future seller, the key is to buy a clean, well-equipped example and keep it in strong condition. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport safe?
The 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport had not been crash tested by either the federal government or IIHS as this review was written.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Rogue Sport’s safety equipment is strongest on higher trims and packages. The SV Premium Package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the SL Premium Package adds automatic emergency braking and automatic high-beam LED headlights. If you move up to the Platinum Package, you also get adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and lane-departure prevention.
The main caveat is that some of the most desirable driver-assistance features are not standard on lower trims, so you should verify exactly which package a used example has before you buy.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Rogue Sport or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary says the Rogue Sport’s name overpromises its driving character, but its styling and available equipment are the real draw.
The bottom line: If you want the Rogue Sport’s styling and a used price that has eased from last year, the 2017 is a reasonable buy. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the best-maintained examples with the right safety and tech packages rather than chasing the cheapest listing.
